Threads of Fate:
Platform: Playstation Publisher: Square EA Developer: Squaresoft Projected Release Date: July 2000
After the relative success of Brave Fencer Musashi, it looks like Square is readying another action / RPG with more than a little bit of a cutesy overtone. Threads of Fate takes the same polygonal, 3D look of Musashi, while allowing for two different characters to be used. Topping it off, the game's development team is comprised of people who worked on Seiken Densetsu 2 (The Secret of Mana for the SNES in North America) and Xenogears.
Threads of Fate will feature two characters to play as, each with their own goals. First off there's Rue who is out to bring his sister back from the dead, after she was murdered three years earlier. He also has the advantage of being armed with the Arc Edge which allows him to morph into any of the monsters that he has defeated, making for quite the arsenal at his disposal. The other character is a young lass by the name of Mint. Now don't let her cute name fool you, as she has here own dark plans. Being a princess who's supposed to eventually ascend the throne and become queen, Mint's more than a little perturbed when it turns out that her little sister, Maya, will become queen. As such Mint wants to find a way to get rid of Maya and become queen herself. Her weapons of choice are a couple of oversized hula-hoops, and she can also use powerful spells for some good old fashioned magic blasting.
Of course these two have some rather lofty goals ahead of them and their dreams certainly won't come true in any conventional weapon, so they both are in search of the Dew Prism (also the game's name in Japan), a mysterious magical artifact. When a character is chosen at the beginning of the game, the player uses that character for the game's entirety. However, the characters paths do cross on several occasions.
With a cute and cuddly visual sensibility and some interesting action elements the Threads of Fate looks to have enough going for it to stand out from the competition. Throw in the fact that the game is being developed by those responsible for two of Square's greatest achievements, and this game may be one to watch for.
