Search engines offer a wealth of traffic, in fact my experience has been that nearly half of my site traffic will come from free listings in search engines. Several things to note about search engines:

The top search engines make up nearly 90% of all search engine traffic. Concentrate on theses top sites, they will yield the most hits for your effort.

Search engines like Alta Vista, Lycos, Hot Bot, Web Crawler and Yahoo (not a search engine but a directory, never the less it works in much the same manner) have millions and million of sites listed. It is important to list each and every page in your site and design each page to rank highly when certain key word searches are performed. This takes time and energy as well as an idea of how search engines work before you begin to create your web site pages.
