Royal Residence,
home of the Wittlesbach dynasty
from the 14th-19th centuries

On Monday afternoon I went into Munich by myself, (with the wrong train ticket, but again I didn't get checked), and took a tour of the Royal Residence, and the summer palace of the
Wittelsbachs, Nymphenburg Palace. They essentially all look like Versailles.

The Great Hall; the entire ceiling was reconstructed after WWII bombing.

The Grotto of Diana

Among other relics, the Schatzkammer
housed the skull of John the Baptist.
Entwined initials M and E,
for Maximillian and Elizabeth

Pretty ceiling in a room devoted to Germanic mythology
People really do wear Lederhosen!

The Hofgarten, outside the palace,
with the yellow Theatinerskirche in the background.
