Civilian Data: (9 August 2000) Honorable Henry L. Garland was born on 29 December 1826. He was married in St. Landry parish to Miss Julia L. Bullard, and to this marriage were born five children: Marie, Charles F., Virginia, Henry L., Jr., and Robert Lee Garland. Henry L., Jr., who became an attorney in New Orleans. Robert Lee Garland graduated from the law department of Tulane University, New Orleans, and was connected with his father in his practice and general business. Robert Lee also was graduated from Manhattan College, New York City. Henry L. Garland served as Captain in Co. B., of the 18th Louisiana (St. Landry Volunteers) and was mustered out of service in May 1862 at Corinth due to chromic dysentery. He survived the war. Henry L.Garland survived the war and lived until 1908, when he died on 27 December 1908. His final resting place is in Opelousas, Louisiana. Additional Information: (27 November 2001) Shortly after the commencement of hostilities, Capt. Louis Lastrapes raised a company of volunteers known as the Opelousas Volunteers and was elected its captain. A sister company, known as the St. Landry Volunteers, had been raised by Capt. Henry L. Garland, who was elected its captain. When various Louisiana regiments were organized at Camp Moore in 1861, these companies became Co. K and Co. B, respectively, of the 18th La. Regt. Capt. Lastrapes was killed and Capt. Garland seriously wounded on April 6, 1862 at Shiloh. They were first cousins and former law partners in Opelousas. Adolphe Lestrapes, Pvt., Co. B., is the brother of Capt. Louis Lastrapes. The submitter has a contemporary photograph of Capt. Louis Lastrapes in uniform. A similar photograph of Capt. Henry L. Garland in uniform is believed to be located in the Lafayette Museum.

Grisamore.) Civilian Data: (26 July 1999) According to the above account, 1st. Lt. Charles D. Bullard was wounded and captured at Shiloh. According to information received from decendant/relative, Charles D. Bullard was listed as MWIA at Shiloh and was buried in St. Louis, Mo. Family tradition says that after the war, Charles' remains were dug up and returned for burial in the Opelousas, Louisiana area. That information has not been confirmed to date.

Additional Information (24 July 2003): New information regarding Capt. John Dick. He was an Enrolling Officer and Coast Pilot. He served under Omar? Mouton. According to an application for the DAR, information from the Texas Comptroller of Public Acccounts, dated June 30, 1928, states that: The office records show that Captain John Dick enlisted at the beginning of the war in the 18th Louisiana Infantry, Company B., and was later detailed for special service as Pilot. Date of discharge was not given. Witness to his service was L. F. Hurt of Williamson County, Texas, and William J. Murphy of New Orleans, Louisiana. According to Muster Roll records, William J. Murphy served in the 18th Louisiana Infantry, Co. B., while L. J. Hurt served with Ragsdale's Battalion, Texas Cavalry.
Additional Information (8 December 2004): Mark Welch, is the Great grandson to John Monroe Dick, and is the Grandson to John Monroe Dick's son, J. T. "Tump" Dick. Mark's brother has a photo of John Monroe Dick identical to the photo displayed on this web site.
