Harper's Tale - Sunday, February 17, 2002, Harper Classroom Hynolonie walks in from the Main Hall and Ballroom. Quayna rushes into the classroom, straightening her clothing and pulling at her dripping curls. "Sorry I'm late, journeyman," she apologises, stopping to look all around the room to see where to sit. Liesana is whistling to herself as she paces around the front of the classroom, fiddling with the placement of a single chair that has replaced the usual large desk on the platform at the front. "Oh, not late at all, apprentice... Quayna, right? Have a seat and get comfortable while we wait for everyone else to assemble." Kaeryn slips quietly, a bounce in her step, in from the Main Hall and
Ballroom. Delilah slips in, chatting quietly with another, mousy looking apprentice. Glancing around the room her eyes flick from face to face, recognizing few as she heads towards a seat nearer to the back with a pleasent, "Afternoon." to the roomful. "Yes ma'am, Quayna..." The apprentice dips (drips) her head in acknowledgement, taking a seat and offering a nervous smile to the other apprentices. Having heard voices from the classroom, Kaeryn stops at the door and pokes her head into the room to see which class is about to take place. "Ah, Liesana's teaching. This should be interesting enough to stick around for," she mumbles to herself before stepping the rest of the way into the room. A quick scan of the room shows a group of faces rather unknown to her, all except for the teacher and one of the students. Ylisa settles quietly into a seat, and gets ready to take notes, then looks round to see who's here, smiling at those already present and turning to greet new arrivals. Cerran sits nervously in a seat. His first lesson in a real class, he hopes he can keep up with everyone. Liesana continues to flit about the front of the room with far more liveliness than a good Law-type should exer display, according to the more cut and dried of her teachers. The apprentices may well fear. Finally satisfied with arrangements, she hops up on the low platform, surveying her crowd and giving a nod to Kaeryn in the back. "Welcome, pull up a seat and get comfortable. I'm Journeyman Liesana, and today I'll be teaching you some Court Law. So if you like to argue, this is the class for you." Kaeryn returns Liesana's nod and moves on to find a seat that's out of the way, obviously intending to stick around for at least part of the class. Finding an empty seat, she settles down into it and drops her bag to the floor, making herself as comfortable as one can in the hard chairs. Quayna half-turns to flash a grin at Cerran, reaching to tease fingers through her damp curls. But as Liesana speaks, she abruptly shifts to face the Journeyman, half-smiling at the mention of arguments. Ylisa turns to shoot a reassuring grin in Cerran's direction, while chuckling quietly at Liesana's remark. Then she sits back in her chair, watching Liesana expectantly. Cerran grins back at Quayna, shaking his head and sending water spraying onto nearby apprentices. Delilah smiles faintly at the opening words, settling a small note-sheet in her lap...its ever present with her in classes see, listening carefully. Liesana holds her position, regarding the class as she watches for reactions to her opening, before moving on, beginning to pace the edges of the platform, hands clasped at the small of her back, with the exception of the occasional gesture. Spotting the note-taking equipment being removed, she shakes her head. "Put the hides and quills away." she proclaims. "The only notes taken today will be ones you keep in your head. This is a practical class." She continues to pace. "Specifically, we'll be taking a look at cross-examination techniques. These are not solely limited to the courtroom." she notes, cracking a grin. "They can also be quite useful for getting the truth out of devious fosterlings. Or apprentices. I'll be requiring a lot of audiance participation. Who wants to volunteer first?" Quayna was reaching for writing materials... but blinks instead, and sets her hands in her lap. Not volunteering /just/ yet. Mimi flounces in from the Main Hall and Ballroom. Delilah hesitates breifly, before slipping the notesheet into the small bag that lies at her feet. Her hands stay tucked in her lap and very out-of-the-air...not much for volunteering this one. Ylisa slips her quill back into its case and drops her writing material into the bag beneath her seat, then looks up hesitantly, unsure whether to volunteer. A smile of anticipation spreads slowly across her face, however, and her hand starts to creep upwards before being replaced firmly in her lap. Mimi slips into the classroom, hardly late at all and being very inconspicious about it. It's nice being small and un-noticeable. She raises her hand too, along with the others, so as to look like she was there the whole time and paying attention. But what is she volunteering for? Oh, it doesn't matter. She won't get picked, probably, which will be just as well since she has no idea what is going on. With her other hand, she slips notebook and stylus from her bag, trying to glance over at another apprentice's notes to see what they're doing. Law-something? Liesana watches the tentative reactions of the class, and simply shakes her head, pinching the bridge of her nose. "A classroom full of Harpers, and no-one wants to show off?" she asks of a green firelizard perched on her shoulder. "What /is/ the Craft coming to?" Yes, it's Liesana in her full, manic state of Law Mode. But what's this? Ahhhh, a latecomer. With her hand up. And with notetaking equipment. A positively evil smile touches her lips. "Mimi!!" she sings out. "So glad you could make it. Come down to the front, and have a seat on this chair here." Kaeryn quirks a smile as the late student sneaks in, thinking she'll go unnoticed, and is chosen to be the first example. The Master nods, approvingly, and squirms in her chair, fitting in quite nicely with the other students. Quayna suppresses a chuckle as Mimi's called up, and crosses one ankle over the other as she waits to see just what's going to happen. Kierna has disconnected. Cerran snickers as he sees his other accomplice in well, getting wet, get called on. Mimi's eyes widen terribly wide, and she stands up, grining slightly at the journeywoman,"Heh. Of course." On her way down to the chair she attempts to send her apprentice friends looks of panic. What are they doing? Someone /please/ tell her. Has Liesana already mentioned what she'll be doing? Should she ask? Yes, she'll ask. "So...What will I be doing while sitting in this chair here?" Heh. Poor little Mimi - it's not her fault she was late. Not really. Oh, this is so not fair. Mimi's /never/ late. And the one time she is, she's called on? How terrible is that? Kierna has connected. Delilah glances at who it was that got chosen, Mimi, straightening up in her chair so she can see over the unfortunatly big head of the fellow almost directly in front of her, to watch whats going to happen. Ylisa manages not to grin as Liesana picks on Mimi, but leans forward in her seat a little to watch what happens next. Her brow furrows a little and she looks intently at the other girl, then glances surreptitiously at Cerran. After a few more covert glances, she takes a longer look at Quayna. A small smile plays across her lips as she observes the damp ones, then she forces herself back to attentiveness, eyes fixed on Liesana. Quayna idly chews an already damp curl, tilting her head to give Mimi an encouraging smile.... doesn't look like Quayna knows exactly what's going on, either. Horrible. Wicked. Cruel. And terribly Liesana. As Mimi should know by now. The Journeywoman gives another smile. "What you will be doing..." she informs her, pitching her voice so the rest of the class can hear. "Is playing a witness. You witnessed... Delilah over there..." Yes, pick on the apprentices time. "Hanging Journeyman Jeranium's spare undergarments from the balcony railing. Now, we all know Journeyman Jeranium, and you're none too keen to rat on Delilah. /I/ am going to try and get evidence from you, and you are going to try and dodge. You can't lie, and unless I get the judge to proclaim you a hostile witness, I can't ask leading questions. So it's a battle of wits. You, the rest of the class," A turn to face them. "Will watch my techniques, and see what you can learn. Got it? We'll critique afterwards, and don't go easy on me because of my rank." Cerran wiggles in his chair, a little uncomfortable as he was still wet when he put his sandy clothes on. Not a good feeling. Nonetheless, he is interested in seeing how Mimi and Liesana battle wits. Mimi nods slowly,"I can do that." Oh yes, Mimi can be good at withholding information when she really wants to, but as most people know, she's much better at prying it out. Did we ever mention that Mimi had much the same appearance as Quayna and Cerran? Dripping wet from head to toe - okay maybe not /that/ wet... But /what/ were those apprentices doing that caused them to be all dripping and moist? Delilah blinks, eyes widening slightly. Her? Oh well...scootching around a bit in her chair gets her a better view of the front, away from the big headed guy in front of her. She can be attentive even if she is hypothetically playing pranks with someones undergarments. Eyes flick briefly between Mimi, Quayna and Cerran, but then focus back on the front. Quayna stifles another giggle with her hand at the idea of stealing undergarments, nodding in response to the journeyman, just to show she's paying attention. Ylisa can't restrain a small chuckle as Liesana outlines the scenario. "Journeyman Jeranium..." she repeats quietly, half-whispering, half laughing. Hey, stealing undergarments has a long and noble history. Just ask Liesana about it some time when she's not on the job. She nods in response to the nods, and then returns her attention to the tableau at hand. "So, Apprentice Mimi. You were assigned to a chore section in the ballroom the night of the prank. At what time did you first become aware of the undergarments decorating the railing?" Snip sneaks in from the Main Hall and Ballroom. Mimi continues to tug and a dripping curl, quickly answering,"When I went down the stairs to do my chores." So maybe she /had/ seen Delilah with them earlier, and she knew that they were going to go /somewhere/, but she was not aware that they were going to 'decorate the railing'. See the reasoning? Beautiful. Snip peeks into the classroom and tip-toes his way toward an empty desk, keeping his eyes locked on the teacher to avoid getting busted. He creeps as quietly as he can toward the back. Maybe if he concentrates hard enough they won't see him.. Kierna has disconnected. Liesana's eyes glimmer as she spots another apprentice Sneaking In Late at the back of the class. They glimmer furthur as it occurs to her that three of the apprentices already present are unreasonably... damp. And sandy. An idea occurs. Breaking briefly from the cross-exam, she notes that "Ah, good of you to show up at last, Snip. You'll be one of my volunteers for the next round." Beatific smile. Then, an abrupt shift back to the scene. "So... you saw the undergarments when they were displayed in prank form. Have you ever seen Journeyman Jeranium's undergarments in the past?" And she manages to keep a straight face throughout. Quayna half-chokes on a snorted laugh, probably at the thought of Journeyman Jeranium's underwear. Delilah looks perfectly innocent...well, because she /is/ in reality, but it adds effect for the scene no? Her fingers twitch ever so slightly, note taking is a hard habit to break. Gaze flicks towards Snip briefly as the journeyman greets him, before she looks back to Mimi and Liesana, lips twitching at the last question. Cerran snickers as Snip is also caught by Liesana. You have to admit, she's got perfect vision. He wonders what the "next round" will be. Ylisa forces herself to try to observe Liesana's technique, with limited success. Lips are a pinched in a scarcely controlled grin, and the shoulders are shaking a little. Mimi also fights to keep a straight face, and attempts to answer the question with a question,"Please specify what is considered 'past'." She had seen them when Delilah was carrying them to the staircase, but shre /also/ saw them that one time she was forced to laundry duty for spilling a whole bunch of wine all over people. Oops. Snip straightens his posture. He doesn't mind. He had to study law anyway, but he can always play the innocent apprentice. "Aye aye sir." he salutes and plunks his bony little body into a seat, pulling out his book and stylus. Liesana arches en eyebrow at Mimi, commenting "Good move," in her teacher's tone, before returning to the polite interrogation. "Please detail every time you have come into visual range of Journeyman Jeranium's undergarments." she clarifies, tone slightly mocking as she adds that "I /truly/ doubt you've seen them so many times as to disremember the instances." Mimi beams at Liesana then resumes 'witness' position. "I had come across them once when I was punished with laundry duty, and I have seen them being carried by drudges or other apprentices." That's detailed enough, yes? The other apprentices were assumably forced to laundry duty, too? Judithe blinks in from ::between::! "Ah." comments Liesana, as if Mimi has suddenly revealed something
truly profound. The journeywoman paces around the chair that her witness is
sitting in. "Ah." More pacing, the effect that of a dragon preparing
to swoop down on a herdbeast. "You have seen /apprentices/ carrying
Journeyman Jeranium's undergarments? When was this, and where were they going
with the undergarments? Please detail each instance as to date and time." Quayna chews on her lower lip nervously, as Liesana starts the tough questioning. Cerran yawns, wishing Mimi would quit stalling and just let it out already. He wants to hear the juicy stuff, not all this about laundry duty. Mimi mentally snaps her fingers. Well, there was no way she could really avoid that question. "I had seen apprentices carrying the laundry away when I was done with laundry duty, carrying it to their proper places. I /had/ seen drudges and apprentices with laundry from the day on my way to stop upstairs to drop off my things before I came down to do my chores - but I did not stop to inquire where they were bringing them, as they all started to go in different directions once I reached the stairs." It's Mimi's /job/ to stall, though. Delilah looks curiously towards the being-grilled apprentice at Liesanas last question...not easy to get around after all. Her nod is of the impressed sort at the answer Mimi comes up with. Hynolonie had gotten completely absorbed in Interpritations again, and had completely forgotten that class was going on. She stared at the text in her lap once more, eyes wide and blinking as she finally looks over the last 10 pages she read, and realizes she couldn't remember a thing off of them. Shards! Interpritations was a horrid book. She closes it and looks back at the class, trying to figure out where everyone is.. and what they were actually talking about. "So you saw apprentices carrying laundry containing Journeyman Jeranium's undergarments the day of the prank." Liesana states. Oh, she's not going to give up. Point of pride, that a legal specialist be able to outwit an apprentice. She begins to step up the speed of her questions. "But you were on chore duty at a time when the laundry should all have been attended to. Didn't you find that a little strange, seeing apprentices carrying undergarments at a time when they shouldn't have been? Who were the apprentices carrying the undergarments?" Kaeryn walks out. Quayna winces on Mimi's behalf, frowning her thick eyebrows together as she
makes mental notes. Ylisa has connected. Liesana smiles lightly. "Delilah? Thank you apprentice, that will be all. No furthur questions." And with that, she returns to her teaching stance, giving a reassuring grin. "It's all right, Mimi. You weren't /supposed/ to be able to avoid that. I'm surprised you held out so long," she admits, leaning against the bottom row of desks, and inquiring of the class at large. "So... there's an example of cross-examination. What tactics did you see me using?" Cerran scrunches his face, trying to think of an answer and not finding any. Mimi beams at Liesana,"You sounded like me trying to get some really juicy gossip from someone!" With that, Mimi returns to her seat, leaving the chair all wet from her dripping clothes and hair. Oh well, pity the apprentices that have to sit there next. Not her fault....entirely. Delilah flashes Mimi a 'good job' type smile from her seat, before the smile shifts to a thoughtful frown. Half raising her hand she offers, "I'm not sure if this is a tactic exactly, but you asked for details a lot?" "You asked her general questions, and then made them more specific?" Quayna volunteers after Delilah has spoken, belatedly raising a hand. Cerran smiles. He's got it! "You circled her like you were hunting her. I think that's called, uh, intimidation?" Ylisa nods in agreement with the previous speakers, raising her own hand at the same time. "You seemed to be asking questions one after the other, putting pressure on her, and sounding quite..." she hunts for a word. "Quite sardonic, as if you wanted her to think you didn't believe her." Liesana nods to the apprentice horde. "Good answers, and yes, those are all tactics. As Cerran noticed, your physical stance and presence are a powerful tool. Go in acting like you own the place. As Ylisa says, tone of voice is also important. And as Delilah and Quayna have both commented on, an insistance on detail, even seemingly irrelevant ones, is good. I also used a fourth technique: I asked a single question in a variety of ways. It makes it easier to spot areas your witness is waffling on. And fifth, when I wanted to ask my most important question, I hid it in a barrage of them. Now." She pauses to look over the class again. "Apprentice Snip, Apprentice Cerran, down to the front, please." Snip groans softly to himself and gets to his feet, padding to the front of the room. He looks more like a 12 turn old than a 20 turn old. He gives Liesana a look that says "Do I /have/ to suffer through this again?" Cerran smacks his forehead. Him? Why him? Oy, this is just /great/. He gets up and wlks to the front, giving "Help me!" faces to the others. Quayna gives Cerran a broad smile, just as encouraging as the one she bestowed earlier on Mimi. Twitching her slightly damp skirt, she settles more comfortably into her chair. Hynolonie wrinkles her nose at Snip and studies him for a moment, finally seeing him for the first time. So this was the Snip that everyone talked about. She presses her lips into a thin line and watches the summoned apprentices make their way forward. She bites her lip, just studying the whole thing now, her other work.. that horrid book put away. Mimi simply leans back in her chair, folding her hands and watching the next pair go at it. I bet the interrogation was quite funny from the viewers end. Ylisa gives a surreptitious wink to Cerran as her fellow Grinstead apprentice takes his place at the front, letting out a long slow breath with her relief at not being chosen. Snip just LOOKS cute and innocent. Wait till you get him started. Why Cerran? Why not? Liesana continues to smile as her plan takes effect, hopping up to sit on one of the lower tiers, and geturing for Cerran to take the 'witness stand'. A nod to the two apprentice males. "Very well, for this scene, I'm going to let you practice what you've learned. Cerran, you're the witness, Snip, you're counsel." There. That ought to give the ferrety little spy something to do. she muses. "The scene... As you can see, Cerran and two other apprentices look rather... damp. Find out why." Mimi laughs rather loudly at the scenario. She quiets down, but from her can be heard small muffled giggles. Goodness, it's not like it's a big /secret/. Someone could come up to MImi and ask her why she was dripping, and she'd answer right off. But I guess people will just have to wait until Cerr is questioned. Cerran sits down in the "witness stand," trying to look as innocent and calm as possible. After all, he /is/ innocent, but being in front of all these people is making him nervous. Quayna stuffs her thumb in her mouth to stop from laughing (again), casting a look over at Mimi and then at Cerran. She's clearly finding this fun... Delilah sits up even straighter...could that head be growing?...peering up at Cerran. Truth to be told, she's wondering too. After all, she never thought water was a typical thing to wear to class. A wicked gleam appears in Ylisa's eyes when the new topic is announced. Curiosity is about to be satisfied! Snip folds his hands behind his back and tilts his head back to point his nose into the air. "So. Apprentice Cerran. You seem to be a bit wet. Would you mind telling us what happened?" Cerran looks around at all the people who seem to just be drooling over this. Well, won't /they/ be surprised. He He assumes a smug look and answers. "Well, I went swimming." Liesana muffles a chuckle from her seat on the edge of the desk, but refrains from asking furthur questions of her own. Ask a simple question, get a simple answer. Quayna gives a little sigh at Snip's question, though a smile of pure mischevious delight appears at Cerran's answer. Snip list a brow. "You went swimming at this time of the day? Why weren't you doing your chores as you should have been?" HAH! Mimi sits back and grins, shooting looks back and forth from Quayna to Cerran. Mimi finished all of her chores, of course before the whole swimming outing. Cerran coughs, trying to keep a straight face. "Well, my chores were light today, and I had a little break." Of course, this doesn't explain why all three are still dripping wet... Liesana remains attentive, just a hint of an amused smile playing over her lips. Snip narrows his emerald eyes. "So you're telling me that Master Kurt let you come alllll the way from Grinstead /alone/ just to go swimming? Are you saying that his mind is so addled from ink poisoning that he would let an apprentice shirk off his duties to his mentor just to go for a swim at a hold over a dozen miles away in the morning when Thread passes?" he thrusts a finger into the air. "If you did your chores which were uncharacteristically light for this time of day, were you also released from classes?" Dripping? Quayna's just nicely soggy now, though drops of water scatter from her curls as she shakes her head at Snip. Mimi is also, by now, only in the /moist/ category. Not quite dripping anymore. Ylisa shifts position in her seat, leaning forward with eyes fixed on Cerran as if willing him to give the right answer. Liesana leans back on the desk, feigning boredom, although a definite twinkle lurks in her eye as she watches the scene. Eventually, she'll call off the ferretty interrogator, but now...? Now, it's just amusing. Cerran sits back and scratches his head, now just the slightest bit damp. "Well, sometimes Kurt sends me down here for a few days to take classes. He is a busy man after all, and can't put /all/ of his attention on me, his mentee. Also, I admit my chores are uncharcteristically light." He gets serious here. Might as well let everyone know his situation. "Well, I'm what you could say a little, uh, behind everyone. I was Holdless before I became an apprentice. I never had the formal training in the hold that everyone else has. So, Kurt lightens my chore load so that I can spend more time studying to catch up with everyone else." He sighs, partly to emphasize his monologue and partly to catch his breath. "I admit, I should have been studying, but I thought a little dip couldn't hurt. And as for classes, if all the apprentices are normally doing chores at that time of day, how could there possibly be classes to attend?" Quayna refrains from applauding Cerran, though she grins broadly at him for his answer. Snip nearly pounces. "So did Master Kurt send a message to Ista Hold as he normally would when sending an apprentice to the Hold? So you admit that you shirked your responsibilities and went for a swim? And there are classes at that time as well as chores, All apprentices know that. So were you /alone/ in this little excursion?" Cerran shrugs. "How should I know if he sent a message? I don't keep
track of him, he keeps track of me." he grins. "Usually, anyway. Yes,
I did shirk my studying, and those classes just hapened to not be any of mine.
And, no, I wasn't alone." Another grin. "My flits were with me, as
usual." Mimi has disconnected. Liesana shakes her head slightly, and moves to intercept Snip's next query, now that Cerran has replied to the previous one. "All right, that will be all Cerran. Go get a towel, and Snip will put down the thumbscrews, eh, Snip. It's obvious who Cerran's accomplices were, but an illicit swim isn't on the same level as poisoning the Lord Warder, so we'll let you go this time. Nice work, Snip." She returns to the platform, and leans against the wall. "So... any questions?" Mimi has connected. Quayna raises her hand tentatively. Snip gestures to the other soaking apprentices "So if you were alone, how do you explain the -" he frowns, looking up at Liesana as if she'd just taken his toy away. He was on such a roll! He makes a pouting face and nods, returning to his seat. Cerran lets out a long sigh of relief, then heads back to his seat. Delilah shakes her head slowly, still looking like she's absorbing the final bits of the lesson, mouth set thoughtfully. Ylisa raises a hand, and comments, "Some of Snip's questions were fairly aggressive. What are the limits on that sort of thing?" Liesana gives Snip an unrepentant grin, and a passing murmur of "Save it for smugglers..." before noting Quayna'a hand and giving an easy nod, replying to Ylisa first. "Agressive... Agressiveness is allowed, so long as the questions do not call for speculation, or are not overly leading in their manner. Naturally, physical violence isn't permitted. And in a court situation, it is the job of the opposing Counsel to see that the witnesses are not overly abused. And you had a question, apprentice Quayna?" Mimi shakes her head, still giggling slightly, noting to herself not to tell people what they were doing, just to make 'em wonder. Quayna turns slightly pink. "Just the same thing as Ylisa, ma'am. Snip was asking lots of questions at the same time, and being quite agressive - Cerran could've got away with not answering all of them, there were so many." Just a suggestion,. Cerran winks in great show at Quayna and Mimi. That's right people, let your imaginations run wild. Hynolonie blinks for a moment.. and stares at Liesana. "The Lord Warder's been poisoned?" She turns a little white? Snip smacks his palm to his forehead and goes face down on his desk. Did she /really/ think he was poisoned? Quayna stares at Hynolonie in bafflement. Cerran chokes on a laugh. Liesana blinks at her mentee for a long moment, before shaking her head, and barking an incredulous laugh. "No, no, Lonie. Andron is fine, and as hideously charming as ever. It was a figure of speech. Put down 'Interpretations' and pay attention, all right?" she orders, dryly amused. "And Quayna, that is a risk we each must decide whether to take or not. If you can keep track of what questions have been asked and answered, it can be very effective to break up the rhythm, and return to an earlier question. If you can't manage that, I wouldn't advise doing that. Any furthur questions before I call this a class?" Hynolonie whimpers. It was just so frustrating to read that book for hours and still not feel like she learned anything. "I'm.. fine. No questions." There. She wrinkles her brow and bites her lip and tries to disappear into the back of the room again. Quayna shakes her head hastily, chewing again on a strand of hair as she thinks about Liesana's words. Cerran smiles and shakes his head. No more questions, please... the beach beckons. ;) Ylisa shakes her head, and reaches down to pull writing materials from her bag. Whatever Liesana said earlier, she's now going to make some notes before she forgets what she's learned. Mimi shakes her head, tossing her stuff back into her bag which was previously removed. Delilah shakes her head a bit, reaching down towards the bag at her feet. Snip puts his things away and slips from his desk. Classes are a leisure for him right now. Back to work work work. "Thank yo ufor your time." Liesana gives a nod. "Well, in that case, class dismissed." she announces, strolling up the aisleway and heading for the door, pausing to stop by Hynolonie. "You look like you could use a break," she murmurs to her mentee. "I'm hereby ordering you to leave 'Interpretations' alone for at least the rest of the day, go to the beach, and suntan." Delilah gets to her feet, slinging the bag over her shoulder, "Thank you for the class..." she says quietly, going to the door. Cerran grins as he overhears Liesana. The beach! Yeah, that's where you should go, muahahaha. |
