The Story of Fennara:
Fennara doesn't talk much about her past and few people have questioned her thoroughly enough to the reveal the truth, and secrets that remain
closely guarded.
Her mother, Verana died giving birth to her third child, when Fenn was only four years old. Living in a small cothold on the outskirts of
Bitra, she grew up taking care other two younger sisters, with very little help from
her oft drunken father, Galias, a man who only just managed to keep the family fed and clothed, and frequently lost large sums at the infamous
Bitran gaming tables.
Support was given by Verana's elder sister Granya, but she was older than Galias by twelve years and exhibiting increasing frailty. It was Granya
who taught Fennara the teaching ballads and nurtured her talents, with positive hostility demonstrated by Galias, whenever Fenn made any effort to
improve herself. Fenn quickly learned to keep her new found knowledge to herself.
Galias disliked his sister in law intensely and drove her away. Before leaving, she left a note telling Fennara where she was if ever she
should need her. When Fenn was ten years old, she took it upon herself to teach her
two younger sisters, Shiria and Leela. For the next four years, the girls worked in their father's fields, desperately scraping a meagre crop
which he would then promptly gamble away. Things were brought to a head when Galias
put up his land as collateral, and lost to a neighbouring cotholder,
Cavriel.
Cavriel, a lecherous man in his late forties, realized that Galias was bankrupt and made him the astounding offer to allow him to keep his
home and some of his land in exchange for the handfasting of his eldest daughter
Fennara, who he had often observed working in the fields that bordered his own land. Galias wholeheartedly agreed, and to fourteen year old
Fenn's horror, she was, that very night paraded before the man who would, in effect,
own her.
As his eyes slid approvingly over her young body, Fennara stared defiantly at
Cavriel, swearing to herself that she would rather die than allow him to touch her. However, to her dismay, a date was set and the deal done.
In the early hours of the morning, Fenn gathered together what few possessions she and her sisters owned and together they crept from the
cot, only the sound of Galias' drunken snores disturbing the silence. Fenn and her sisters took it in turns to ride the old runner beast that served
as transport for their family, and keeping to the less well traveled paths travelling mainly at night, they made their way slowly to
Telgar,
where Granya welcomed them with open arms.
In these few days they settled in with her, finally happy. By the firelight, Granya told Fenn many things that she had been previously unaware of,
the most surprising of all being that Granya and Verana had a younger sister,
Livia, who had stood up to Galias once, disliking his treatment of Verana. He angrily cut all ties between her and her sisters and forbade any
mention of her name from that time on. Now Fenn discovered that the Aunt who she had
previously been unaware of, had settled in Tillek and that she had cousins!
Shiria and Leela happily remained with their Aunt Granya, but Fenn had made the break from Galias and now had the chance to follow the path
laid down by a childish dream. She continued on foot to Tillek where there was an
extremely happy reunion with Illata, Christara and Cattana, the cousins she had so suddenly discovered, and after remaining there a few days, all
four girls traveled to Ista where Christara found herself a home, and the others
applied to become Harper Apprentices. She succeeded in this endeavour, and later was made a Senior Apprentice at the Harper Hall,
specializing in singing and songcrafting, playing her pipes, and her new love, dance.
