The Story of Moonn:
A year after that, there was a fire in the Keroon stables. Being in the stables at the time, she suffered quite a bit of damage, mostly from the smoke. As the riders rescued people and took them away from the hold, she got separated from her family and as her throat was quite damaged from the smoke, she was unable to speak and get back to her family. Her family thought she perished in the fire, and so she ended up at High Reaches Weyr, taken to the healers and the nursery by the rider that rescued her. The healers looked her over and healed her to the best of their abilities, but her young throat was scarred for life and as it was still healing while she would have been learning to talk, she never did. After the healers assumed that it was damaged enough that she would never learn to speak. After a turn or so she became fully healed and an active young child again except that she was unusually quiet. Another fosterling at High Reaches, Starr, took the young Dione under her wing, and helped her learn sign language, as Starr also had a problem, she could not hear well. Ciria and Enya, Starr's foster parents, soon adopted her. Life went on as usual at 'Reaches, with the occasional exciting event breaking the monotony. One time she met up with a few riders in the cavern at the ripe old age of 4 and learned what it was like to be drunk. Life proceeded onward, the various hatchings she was able to watch, and once even see her nanny impress. At around 6, she first met Sabrina, the Reaches's resident Starcrafter, and soon she was hooked; the Stars and night sky at even the young age of 6 became her passion and her fascination. Spending many nights up on the Star Stones listening to the constellation stories, she soon had them committed to memory. From there she worked extra hard with the Harpers learning to read and write much better, and, when she could, learning how to tell tales; the good kind of course, but they did come in handy when she needed a good excuse to get out of trouble. Soon she was spending so much time with Sabrina she asked Sabrina to be her foster-mommy instead of Ciera and Enya. Sabrina agreed. Little did Dione know that within the turn Sabrina was going to be called away from High Reaches and back to Gar. And so she went on to Gar with Sabrina and to the warmer climes of Ista. Life at Gar and the Starcraft went well. Sneaking into as many classes as possible, Dione soon learned even more about the planets, stars, and night sky than she had known from listening to Sabrina. Life at Gar was carefree and fun, the warmer weather finally put some color into her cheeks and helped flush out her waifish form. Starr visited often and she soon became known as Moonn, the two sisters terrorizing the craft together, one time taking glows and 'painting' them onto the walls of the hall in forms of stars, moons and other astrological things. The name 'Moonn' quickly stuck, and even when her foster-sister wasn't visiting, all the Starcrafters called her by the nickname. Moonn also was able to visit High Reaches at times, and there she used her newfound Starcraft knowledge to keep any interested souls busy in the central bowl with her stories scrawled in the dirt. Soon though she had been to all the Starcraft classes she was allowed to and she got bored. She spent more time with the Harpers, refining her ability to play the flute she had bought at a gather, and her storytelling. At the age of 9, Sabrina and Sarilka became handfasted and she became Sarilka's fosterling as well, moving to the Healer area above the Gar infirmary. Always being one for knowledge she learned a few rudiments of the Healercraft as well. Looking for things to do one day, she came across Natch who quickly recruited her to help out in the Kitchens. With a new position as Gar Kitchen Helper, Moonn was kept busy, but she still had some free time on her hands, so she soon was also taking regular lessons with the Harpers as a Student. Unable to visit 'Reaches as much as before, she settled into her routine at Gar, learning the Bunny slide and making many friends between the Gar and Starcraft population. And so her twelfth turnday, or what everyone assumed to be close to it, approached without many mishaps. Her turnday came, only to find her sitting and waiting outside of the Starcraft office, patiently waiting for someone to interview her for actually joining the craft. And so she was accepted into the craft, and her duties in the Gar Kitchens were ended, although she can still be found there occasionally helping out when her duties permit. Continuing her studies as a Harper Student, she combines them with her Starcraft ones and sometimes with her smart mouth corrects her teachers when they tell something wrong. Working hard as an Apprentice, her thirteenth turnday came around and her mentor Keris decided because of her years of taking classes previously as a fosterling, that she was now a Sr. Apprentice. |
