I know, grading is so subjective. However, I think it is a nessessary evil. When I'm interested in a tape, I want to have some idea of how it sounds. So I tried to take as much of the guess-work out as possible. Below is the grade and the description of the grading criteria.
Also, you can click on the cassette icon and hear a sample of a recording of that quality. (Well, it doesn't always work. So...cross your fingers.) Note, these samples are recorded at 8-bit mono to save memory, so don't put a whole lot of stock into them.
A+ -Professional or pretty close. Usually a soundboard.
A -Excellent recording. Either a very good soundboard or audience recording. All levels are good. Maybe some crowd noise or distortion, but very little.
A- -Great recording. Some crowd noise, distortion, or maybe some of the levels may be a bit thin.
B+ -Very good, but not perfect. Probably a decent amount of crowd noise or distortion, but it doesn't ruin the tape. Some of the levels are probably off.
B -Good recording, but definitely sounds like a "bootleg."
B- -Listenable, but not recommended. Probably a good deal of distortion or background noise.
C+ or below - Don't bother, unless you really, really want this tape and have never seen it anywhere else before.
***If you have any questions about "what's wrong" with a tape that doesn't get an A+ I'll be more than happy to tell you. Also, if I ever trade you a tape and you disagree with the grading I gave it please let me know.
(Anything graded a B+ or better is recommended.)
