Acting Conservatory Programs

Where Have the Academies Gone?

Drama Masks

It is very difficult to find acting programs online so I have taken the liberty to piece some together. Here are some descriptions and links to Academies in the US and overseas, to give you a little help.
*And as a side note if you are from the US looking for funding overseas you may be able to get federal funding for the school of your choice, see www.fafsa.ed.gov.

Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama

Located in the heart of Glasgow, Scotland, this prestigious academy has had many famous faces pass through its halls, including Alan Cumming (Cabaret) and John Hannah (Sliding Doors). Alumni even come back to teach special sessions with selected students.

The Oxford School of Drama

Throughout the years students have had a chance to work with fine actors such as Diana Rigg (The Avengers) and Sir Ian McKellen (Gods and Monsters). There is also an opportunity to train with directors from the Royal Shakespeare Company.

The London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts

Since 1965, LAMDA has provided not only training for actors but an outstanding stage management program as well. Noted alumni have included Swoosie Kurtz (Dangerous Liasons), John Lithgow (3rd Rock from the Sun), and Donald Sutherland (M.A.S.H.). There is even an opportunity to work with alumni, as they come back to participate in productions.

American Academy of Dramatic Arts

It has been called the training ground for our nation's finest actors, and who could dispute that, with names like Lauren Bacall, Kirk Douglas, and Danny DeVito on their alumni roster? AADA has a campus in New York and two campuses in California, one of which is located in Hollywood off of Sunset Blvd.

East 15 Acting School

East 15 consider themselves to be a bridge between the best of British and Continental traditions, and they have reason to since their student body consists of people from Germany, Turkey, New Zealand, and beyond. East 15 encourage their actors to be individuals and solve problems independently.

Guilford School of Acting

If your talents are within the realm of musical theater, GSA not only offers acting programs, but they have a three year musical theater program that emphasises all aspects of musicals, including their history. Past graduates include Micheal Ball (The Phantom of the Opera) and Brenda Blethyn (Little Voice).

Birmingham School of Speech and Drama

Recent graduates of BSSD have gone on to perform with the Royal Shakespeare Company and at the Royal Court. Their program offers BAs in both Acting and Musical Theater.

Welsh College of Music and Drama

How can a school go wrong when one of its patrons is the Prince of Wales and one of its former students is Sir Anthony Hopkins? Courses are available in Acting, Musical Theater, and Stage Management.

The Juilliard School

What's more prestigious than Juilliard? I don't know. :) Ever since I was a child I dreamed of going there, but I found there were other avenues of study. If you are brave enough to try, go to their site, request the information, and do it. One important note: Juilliard does provide financial aid through the school, so if you are good enough, they just might pay for your education.
