Everyone's heard of the
Melissa e-mail virus by now ( 4/6/99 ).
There's also the mutations of
Melissa - present and Future versions - plus the CIH virus (which can wipe out your hard drive) and hundreds of other viruses, trojan horses and worms...
I've found some
FREE help listed below.
InoculateIT Personal Edition - Free for personal use, catches and kills
such viruses as boot sector and file viruses plus the macro viruses
(Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Free registration at http://antivirus.cai.com
(Computer Associates) gets you free updates and tech support.
AVG Anti-Virus - Also Free. A strong anti-virus program with good
documentation. It can run constantly in the background or can be scheduled
to scan at intervals of your choosing. It has heuristic analysis to
detect unknown viruses, worms, and Trojan horses as well as online updates.
F-Prot Anti-Virus - Free for personal use, F-PROT detects and
cleans viruses from a variety of operating
systems. Documentation is included.
Virus scanner/killer
- FREEWARE from Norton (Symantec).
I have Norton AntiVirus version 4.0 so I haven't tried the freeware version which I stumbled upon recently while searching for information on CIH...
Housecall - is a FREE online service available to all Web users. They will scan your PC and destroy any viruses. There's nothing to download or install.
Attention: the CIH virus, which is dormant till the 26th of any month, must be contained before it can be removed - this can be done with a special
download.
The instructions are included on the same page as the file.

Sometimes I get email from people I know warning me about viruses. Sometimes
these warnings are about viruses that don't exist. For info on
