Conversation between Charles and Dugan on the In Ovo
"Well, Dugan, the In Ovo is a curious place. There are many theories to what it is exactly. One thing I can tell you fo sure, though : YOU never want to go there."
Dugan took slight offense at that remark. That was nothing new, though. Taking everything personally made life far more interesting, especially if you didn't really believe any of it. Challenge time. "Why not?"
"Try and recall the worst nightmare you've ever had. Now give that a physical form, give the terror a piece of flesh to live in. Take every nightmare that has existed since the dawn of conscious man and do the same. Now let them breed into forms more hideous than the most warped human mind could even condiser. These oviates are what populate the In Ovo, Chester Dugan. They would rip out your innards and feast on them before your eyes before they got around to doing any thing nasty."
Knowing when to back down was also a handy trait."Okay."
"The In Ovo is made up of the exact opposite of Reality, a sort of Anti-reality. When someone uses one of the Art they open a small rift between here and there. We take a small piece of that non-reality and make it do what we need it to do. Simple enough, right?
"The problem lies in the fact that the piece of Reality that was exchanged floats around in the In Ovo until some Oviate pops by and takes it. Now they are more real than they were before. Many of the more intelligent ones have learned to follow Crafters around and feed from them. If an Oviate becomes too real, it wanders into our Reality. All hell usually breaks loose - they are wholly Unnatural Creatures."
