In the beginning ...(Adapted and copied from B. Moir's thesis)
There are five patrilines (see Takuu Culture on Takuu, each with it's own story about how their
anscestors came to Takuu. Thus there are several stories of the Takuu origins. The stories vary in some particulars, but are consistent in many aspects as well...We present
here a 'megastory'; one that contains each of these as a 'substory'.
Te henua e nnoho ...
The first Takuu came from Sopokana, which means the 'place where the sun rises', or the east. The first canoe to reach Takuu was
led by a man called Takuu, who set out from his island, called, (believe it or not) Takuu. Takuu first travelled to the island of Ttuila to
collect his two sons who would accompany him. Having left Ttuila, they arrived at the island of Savaiki. They stayed there long enough to build a new canoe, and to be given
foodstuff and spears by the ariki (chief/king) of that land. They then travelled on to Lotuma, where they lived for a long time.
After leaving Lotuma the canoe came to Taputapu, and then to Niua. Eventually they came to Luaniua where they left one of their party to found a settlement.
The canoe continued on its voyage, discovering and establishing communities on the atolls of Takuu and Nukuria. The canoe then returned to Savaiki to tell the ariki
of these accomplishments. After additional trips to Ontong Java and Nukuria the travellors settled permanently on Takuu.
Notes
The islands of Ta'u and Tutuila are now part of American Samoa.

Lotuma (cf.Rotuma) is a group of polynesian islands in Fiji.
Luaniua means "the second Niua". It is also called Ontong Java, and is part of the Solomon Islands.
Two of the myths state that having found Takuu, they travelled further west to the "Melanesian islands" or "Buka", where they
brought back taro to plant on their new land.
