Organized in Cleveland, Cuyahoga Co., Ohio under the direction of Captain John J. Wiseman.

Three Month service: Mustered in April 29^th, 1861 at Cleveland, Ohio by William Clinton, 1^st Lieutenant, 10^th Infantry U.S.A., Mustering Officer. Mustered out August 18^th, 1861 at Columbus, Ohio by T. J. Cram, Captain, U.S. Engineers, Mustering Officer.

Three Year service: Mustered in at Camp Dennison, Cincinnati, Ohio, between June 17^th and June 20^th, 1861. Mustered out at Cleveland, Ohio July 6^th, 1864.

Notes:

	The Battle of Winchester, Va. on March 23^rd, 1861 was also noted as the Battle of Kernstown, Va.
	Soldiers who have no rank associated with their name are Privates in the Army.
	On June 11^th, 1864 a detachment of men originally recruited for the 7^th Regiment was detailed to the 5^th Regiment. On Oct. 31^st, 1864 the men of this detail were absorbed into the ranks of the 5^th O. V. I.

	The Seventh Regiment was relieved from active duty June 11^th, 1864, by Circular No. 36, War Department, dated May 2^nd, 1864.
	Soldiers whose names are highlighted in green represent those men who enlisted in the original Regiment in June of 1861 and survived all three years of service to be mustered out when the Regiment was discharged in July of 1864.

Buried at Arlington National Cemetery. His gravesite is a small open house-air type mausoleum with benches inside near the roadway in Section 2..His wife was Clarentine Clay. Promoted to 2nd Lt. Co. Capt. Ernst J. Krieger was born in Germany in the year 1833. He was educated in the common schools of his native country, and was especially proficient in his native language. He immigrated with his parents to the United States when he was young and settled at Cleveland, Ohio.

In November, 1860, the "Cleveland Turn Verein," on account of the mutterings of a civil war, commenced learning military drill so as to be prepared, and he was one of the most patriotic members of the organization.

April 18, 1861 at the first firing on Fort Sumter he joined the "National Guards" for a period of three months as a private. This company was mustered into the service of the United States as Company K, Seventh Regiment O. V. I., and was known as such thereafter. Reenlisted June 19, 1861, for a period of three years or during the war. He was rapidly promoted to the position of captain for gallant and meritorious service in the face of the enemy, and was mustered out with his regiment on account of expiration of its term of service July 6, 1864, as such officer.

He participated in the following battles: Cross Lanes, Virginia, August 26, 1861; Winchester, Virginia, March 23, 1862; Port Republic, Virginia, June 9, 1862; Cedar Mountain, Virginia, August 9, 1862; Second Bull Run campaign, August 20 to September 2, 1862; Antietam, Maryland, September 17, 1862 (wounded in the head in the latter-named battle) ; Dumfries, Virginia, December 27, 1862; Chancellorsville, Virginia, May 1, 2, and 3, 1863; Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, July 1, 2, and 3, 1863; Lookout Mountain, Tennessee, November 24, 1863; Missionary Ridge, Tennessee, November 25, 1863; Ringgold, Georgia, November 27, !863 (wounded); Dug Gap, Georgia, May 8, 1864; Rocky Face Ridge, Georgia, May 11, 1864; Resaca, Georgia, May 13 and 15, 1864; New Hope Church, or Dallas, Georgia, May 26, 1864.

After the muster out of his regiment he was appointed major of the One Hundred and Seventy-seventh O. V. I. and joined that command, and was mustered out with it at the close of the war, when he returned to Cleveland, Ohio, and became a partner in a machine building firm which was a failure. He had several attacks of paralysis brought on account of the wound he had received at Antietam, and in 1878 was admitted to the Soldiers’ Home at Dayton, Ohio. He remained there until he died, March 14, 1881. He was buried with full military honors in Section B, Row 12, Grave; 27, Home Cemetery, where a marble stone bearing name, command, etc., was placed.

Krieger was an exceptionally brave and patriotic soldier, and the wound he had received in action occasioned his early demise. (Wilson)

Capt. Christian Nesper was born in the village of Flein in the Kingdom of Wurtemburg, in the year 1838. He was educated in the schools of his native village until his thirteenth year. He imbibed a strong love for boating, fishing, and simple water craft on the River Neckar, near which his parents resided, and decided to go to sea when he was thirteen years old. He sailed the oceans of the earth in all climes, first as cabin boy and then before the mast. On one of these trips he had an attack of yellow fever at an east India port and was left on shore. After his recovery he joined another ship, and sailed until the year 1855, when he landed in New York, quitting sailing for al time, and he to Cleveland, Ohio, where he had a sister living. He learned the trade of making cigars and commenced business for himself. On account of his previous active outdoor life he joined the old "Cleveland Turn Verein" for exercise, amusement, and to learn military drill, and while a member of this association he made friends with Joe Krieger, E.H. Bohm, and others, and continued these friendships through life.

On his return to civil life he commenced again his old business, and opened a factory for the manufacture of cigars in connection with a store on Ontario St, Cleveland, Ohio. On Oct. 25th, 1866, he married Miss Mary Meyer, and they had two children, one boy and one girl. (Wilson)

SCHUTTE, JOHN F.; Entered the service April 20^th, 1861, for 3 months; mustered out and reenlisted June 17^th, 1861, for 3 years; mustered out as 1st Lieutenant June 17^th, 1861, to accept promotion to Captain in 3 years' service; killed while on a reconnaissance mission near Cross Lanes, Va., Aug. 20^th, 1861. Entered the service as a lieutenant in Captain Wiseman’s company, and on its organization for three years, was made its captain. He was with the regiment until just before its affair at Cross Lands, when, being on picket duty on the banks of the Gauley River, he imprudently crossed over, and after advancing some miles into the enemy’s country, was fired upon by a body of cavalry, concealed in the bushes, and mortally wounded. After being taken to an old building close by, he was left at his own request, and soon after expired. The rebels buried him on the spot. No braver officer ever entered the service. Had he lived, he would undoubtedly have distinguished himself.

At the time of his death, no officer had a better reputation. His company was somewhat difficult to manage, but while he was in command, it was not surpassed for discipline, and hardly equaled. He was kind to every one who did his duty, but when one of his men failed to do that, he came down upon him with a heavy hand. His loss was deeply felt throughout the entire command. His company had recognized in him a leader, and they deplored his loss. (Wood)

BOHM, EDWARD H.; Entered the service April 22^nd, 1861, for 3 months; appointed Corporal April 29^th, 1861; mustered out and reenlisted June 20^th, 1861, for 3 years; appointed Sergeant June 20^th, 1861; promoted to 2^nd Lieutenant Nov. 2^nd, 1862 and assigned to Co. B; on Aug. 20^th, 1861 Bohm was detailed in command of a reconnoitering expedition to find and observe the movements of the enemy near Carnifax Ferry, and came in contact with two companies of rebel cavalry, in which several of his men were wounded, including Captain John F. Schutte, who accompanied the expedition in citizen's clothes, and was mortally wounded . At the request of Captain Schutte to leave him and save themselves many escaped. Sergeant Bohm and Private Henry Weisenbach refused to leave their Captain, and both were taken prisoner, the first three weeks of his captivity were spent at White Sulfur Springs, West Virginia then sent to Libby Prison at Richmond. About the middle of October, 1861, Bohm and all of the Seventh Regiment prisoners who were captured at the Battle of Cross Lanes, Aug. 26^th, 1861, with others sufficient to make 510 were sent to New Orleans as hostages for 51 Privateers captured off Charleston and held as pirates. On Feb. 7^th, 1862, all of the New Orleans prisoners were sent to Salisbury, N. C. and confined in an old cotton mill. On May 26^th, 1862 Bohm and about 1,800 other prisoners under parole were delivered to the US authorities at Little Washington, N. C. And transported to Newbern, N. C., then to New York and finally arriving at Cleveland, Ohio, June 5^th, 1862. About June 20^th, 1862, Bohm mustered nearly all of the paroled prisoners of the Seventh Regiment for their first pay at Columbus, Ohio. On July 20^th, 1862, he was entrusted by Capt. A. B. Dodd, 15^th U. S. Infantry, military commander at Columbus, Ohio, with the duty of organizing the paroled prisoners at Camp Chase into a company for service as provost guards, which command he held until Feb., 1863. Having been exchanged he was placed in command of 120 other exchanged men of the Seventh and started to join the regiment, arriving March 17^th, 1863. By order of Colonel Creighton he assumed the command of Company D; on Jan. 7^th, 1863 he was commissioned 1^st Lieutenant of Co. B; he was wounded in the left arm at the Battle of Ringgold, Ga., Nov. 27^th, 1863; after returning to the regiment from his wounds he was assigned to Co. I; mustered out with the company at Cleveland, Ohio, July 7th^th, 1864.

Surgeon B. Howard, USA; died from the effects of his wounds on Dec. 19^th, 1862.
