Matt Freeman

  History

Matt was born in '66 in Albany, California, a working class suburb located between Berkeley and El Cerrito. Matt and Tim have been friends since they were five and he has had to save Tim from Detox [a street-level drug rehab clinic that Tim was sent to several time] and other stuff several times. He has played with many bands, some along with Tim (Op Ivy, Downfall). Matt has also played with MDC (Millions Of Dead Cops). Matt's favorite band is X. Some of the bass in Rancid's songs were written by X. Matt went to play with Excene Cervanka and DJ Bonebrake from X in Auntie Christ. Matt former name was Matt McCall when he was in Operation Ivy. "McCall" was a nickname that came from the show "The Equilizer." Matt is the driver for the band on tours. His '63 Chevy Nova (or is it a '69 Chrysler Newport?) is in the video of Salvation. As Tim once said, Matt can play anything. Matt's father is very proud of him (but he was also proud of him when Matt worked a truck rental place.) Matt's dad was a cop.

Plays

"Matt played a Fender Jazz through an Acoustic 320 with four 15-inch speakers. But recently it started to rattle, and nobody could figure out why. Now that they'll be touring with roadies who can take care of the tubes, he's switched to an Ampeg SVT II. Unlike most of the prominent heroes in the bass pantheon, he plays with a pick (orange Dunlop mediums).

INFLUENCES

"Yeah, Entwistle's my hero, I guess," says Matt in his Manhattan hotel room. "I also like John Doe from X. He's an amazing punk rock bass player. You don't really hear him on the records, but if you listen carefully, he has that style of dropping notes in from nowhere that totally make the song. And Harace Panter from the Specials, he was a big influence. But Entwistle would be number one.
