The next day Holly invited Paul to drinks at her apartment.  There, Paul is told the story of Holly’s nameless cat: "It’s a little inconvenient, his not having a name. But I haven’t any right to give him one: He’ll have to wait until he belongs to somebody. We just sort of took up by the river one day, we don’t belong to each other: he’s an independent, and so am I." Paul also met O. J. Bermam (who informed Paul he was the man who discovered Holly and convinced to her to become an actress.  The night before the screen test, Holly flew to New York and announced she didn't want to become an actress), Rutherfurd "Rusty" Trawler (an immature millionaire who Holly plans to marry), and Mag Wildwood (a model who Holly isn’t too fond of). Mag and Holly end up becoming roommates and soon, Paul is introduced to Mag’s fiancé, José Ybarra-Jaeger.

A few weeks later, Paul received a letter from a publisher he had sent a story; the company wanted to print his story.  Paul was so excited he couldn’t wait to tell Holly and the two of them spent the day together to celebrate.  While they were out, Holly picked up half a dozen jars of peanut butter for Fred (her brother, who was in the Army) and Paul showed Holly a birdcage he admired in an antique store window.  Holly later gave him the birdcage as a Christmas present, and Paul gave her a St. Christopher medal.

A few months later, in February, Holly, Rusty, Mag, and José went on a winter vacation.  When Holly returned, her and Paul got into an argument and the two of them didn’t talk until something extraordinary happened: Holly’s husband came to visit.  Holly (then Lulamae Barnes) married Doc Golightly when she was fourteen but ran away a few months later.  Doc wanted Holly to come back to Tulip, Texas to take care of his children, but Holly refused.

A few weeks later, Paul was riding home on the subway when he noticed a newspaper headline: TRAWLER MARRIES FOURTH.  Upon reading the newspaper, He realized that it wasn’t Holly who married Rusty, but Mag Wildwood.  He rushed home to find Holly tearing apart her apartment.  After she calmed down, Paul asked José why she was so upset about Rusty and Mag’s marriage and José showed him the telegram that started the outburst.  It read: Received notice young Fred killed in action overseas stop your husband and children join in the sorrow of our mutual loss stop letter follows love Doc.  Holly didn’t speak of Fred again, and she also stopped calling Paul "Fred".
