On Paul’s birthday, September 30, Holly informed
Paul she was moving to Brazil with José, and (to cheer him up) took
Paul on a horse ride through the park. Paul’s horse took off and was stopped
by Holly, but not before Paul fell off. Later that night, while Paul
was soaking in his tub and Holly waited to nurse him, two detectives came
in and arrested Holly on the charge of transferring messages between Sally
Tomato and Mr. O’Shaunghnessy.
Paul called O. J. Berman and was told O. J.’s lawyer was
taking care of her bail and defense, but O. J. was keeping himself anonymous.
Paul visited Holly in the hospital (she was slapped by one of the arresting
officers) and she asked him to pick up some things from her apartment.
When he went, José’s cousin was packing José’s things, and
delivered a letter for Holly. Holly asked Paul to read the letter
to her, and when he was through, she decided to go to Brazil, even though
José had broken up with her and she was under criminal indictment.
When she was released from the hospital, Holly took a
cab to Joe’s Bar and asked Fred to go back to her apartment, get her St.
Christopher’s medal, pack her clothes and bring her cat. Paul reluctantly
delivered and the two of them got into a limousine (ordered by Joe Bell)
to go to the airport. On the way there, Holly ordered the driver
to stop and got off to leave her cat, claiming they didn’t belong to each
other. Paul was hurt she’d do such a thing, and Holly ordered the
limousine stopped once more. She got out and searched for her cat,
and started to cry because she realized they had belonged to each other.
Paul promised he’d find the cat and she left for the airport.
Holly was headline news for a while after she left the
country, but it all blew over and wasn’t mentioned until Sally Tomato died
of a heart attack in prison on Christmas. Paul received a postcard
from Holly saying she’d write with her address as soon as she found out
where she was living, but Paul didn’t received one after that. Paul
wanted to tell her he sold two stories, the Trawlers were filing for divorce,
and that he had found her cat. The cat belonged to a family in the
Spanish Harlem, and Paul hoped Holly had found someplace where she
belonged too.
