BRANCH NEWS
January Branch meeting
Our next branch meeting will be on Wednesday January 17th 2001 7.15 for 7.30 start at the Community Centre, Southend Close. I would like to reassure those of you who have not been to the Community Centre before that it is totally wheelchair friendly.
The theme for the evening will be “Support for Carers” The speaker will be YvonneStanbury from the carers support group “Carewaves”
This promises to be an interesting evening for both MS’ers and their carers. Yvonne will be talking about practical help, money matters and how to meet other carers. I am sure she will also be happy to answer any questions you may have. The evening is open to all members and non-members so if you would like to invite someone along, please do so.
As usual, light refreshments will be available and there will also be a prize raffle
The meeting is an ideal time for us to meet and exchange ideas for other meetings and or social events.
If you need help with transport let us know and we will do our best to help.
2001 London Marathon
Nick Bitel, Chief Executive of the Flora London Marathon announced the Multiple Sclerosis Society as the official charity for the 2001 Flora London Marathon. In his announcement he said “the Society has been hugely successful both in its fundraising and raising awareness of MS through the Marathon in the last few years and has made a real difference for many people suffering with MS. We hope this
special status will continue to increase awareness and funds, raised for this very worthy cause.” Ken Walker, Marketing Director of the Multiple Sclerosis Society stated that “he was thrilled that The MS Society has been selected as the official charity for the 2001 Flora London Marathon. Next year’s race falls on the first day of National MS Week. It is therefore a perfect way of launching a very important week for both the charity and people with MS.”
The Branch are actively looking to recruit runners to be part of the Marathon team. If you know of anyone who could be interested please call the Branch for more details
Branch Welfare Officer
We are delighted to report that the Stevenage Branch now has a full time Welfare Officer. One of our latest recruits to the committee, Hazel Roethenbaugh has agreed to take on this very important role leaving our Chairman Sue Filby free to get on with the job of being Chairman. However Sue will work very closely with Hazel and will in effect also be Assistant Welfare officer.
Many of you will already know Hazel from her work with Shopmobility and we are sure you will agree that she will make an excellent Welfare Officer. She is very experienced in work with welfare, and is involved with the Leonard Cheshire Workability Project as well as Shopmobility. If you need help in any way, be it benefits, form filling, advice about grants, Social Services, etc or you just need to talk about the problems you are experiencing, Hazel is your man (woman) !
To make it easier to contact Hazel, we now have a dedicated telephone line for the Stevenage Branch. This line is always manned. If Hazel is not there the answer phone will definitely be on and your call will be returned within 24 hours.
The number is: 01438 365839
Miles of Pennies (or 2p, 5p, 10p etc.!!)
With winter drawing on, fundraising activities have all but stopped at the Branch. However, the need to ensure that we have the necessary money available to give support to our members, remains at the front of our minds. So……………
We have come up with the idea of attempting to raise, through our membership and their family and friends, a “Mile” or more of Pennies We are asking members to save their 1p, 2p or any other coins !
I reckon there are approximately 72,411 pennies to a mile, and a mile equals about £725, so… if we ALL get involved how far can we go ?
Contact a member of the Committee to arrange for a collection box’
By the way, you’ve heard of being ‘worth your weight in gold’ but do you know what your weight is in pennies ??
