Lindsay Goward - an RSC’s DiaryYour Editor has invited me to contribute to your newsletter. RSC stands for Regional Support Coordinator not Royal Shakespeare Company, although I sometimes wonder which has the most drama in it.
My main role is supporting the work of the society, which goes on through its regions. I cover two regions, which are Herts and Essex and East Anglia. As you may know the aims of regions are different to those of branches but its main aims are to improve standards of services for people with MS, making links with health and social services, supporting branches, campaigning and running regional events. Most weeks I have a few aims which usually include: tidy office, develop wonderful filing system, do my travel expenses, clean car, eat proper food, exercise etc. Unfortunately those aims have been carried over on my to do list for next week!
Monday
: Answer e-mail, mail and messages as I had spent several days last week at meetings in London. I begin to plan for a welfare forum to be held for the Herts and Essex branch welfare volunteers. This involves a lot of ringing around to find a venue and date, as well as getting letters out. I hope some of the welfare officers attend!A new branch chair rings to discuss the problem the committee has been having getting volunteers and attracting members. We discuss options to develop the branch and I agree to attend a committee meeting the following week. Have several more calls with regional committee members to plan future events.
Went and facilitated a branch’s follow up meeting from the regions core branch activities conference. A worthwhile meeting and the branch decided on some useful objectives.
Tuesday:
Made several calls around the MS nurse bids that I am involved with in Herts and Essex.Drove to St Albans for an evening West Herts community team meeting, this involves the NHS trusts, rehab teams, health authority, social services and the MS Society branches. I gave a short presentation on the MS nurse scheme and the professional education. Arranged to attend further meetings to write an MS nurse application and to finalise the newly diagnosed pack.
Wednesday:
Spent most of the day writing an “Understanding Social Services” document as I am chairing a working group at the NC to develop branches and regions work with social services.Had a discussion with Nigel (my line manager) about developing the East Anglia Regional Committee’s agreed a plan of action. Did some of the follow up work from the meetings of the previous day. Also started to ring round a number of people who want to work with the regions. Cycled to post office (my exercise for the day!).
Thursday:
Meeting with Pam and the new Chief Executive of the local PCT to discuss the need for a specialist MS nurse in Stevenage. Met with the regional chair and Pam who is the treasurer, to plan a number of regional events including the committee meeting, the “Getting to Grips” seminar and the AGM. We always seem to have very productive meetings considering we meet at a service station on the M11.Friday:
Went to National Centre to chair the social services working group with officers and volunteers and took advantage being at the NC to have discussions with various staff members and to use the photocopier. As I normally work alone I miss having colleagues around (no one to bore with my lost in Thurrock stories), but I think I miss not being able to borrow their staplers and having a photocopier more.Saturday:
Regional committee meeting for Herts and Essex at Harlow, for once it does not clash with a football match or major sporting or social events. Always a very full and busy meeting with loads of things to discuss. Felt slightly unprepared as I had left some of my notes at the NC (on the photocopier).Hurrah! Sunday off and then another week to work on my aims
