i have researched this and there’s no question in my mind that dogen went to china and studied with rujing
however rujing did not give him lineage transmission as he (rujing) was dead against it and dogen’s rather swanky lineage document is forged, probably by dogen and one of his monks !
dogen was in a very competitive religious environment and may have felt that was needed, its not necessarily invalid and doesn’t reflect badly on him in any way !
i do know that recent research has validated his description of the stairway of a chinese monastery , his description had been previously assumed to be wrong
