| Hardware Purchase |
Basic new Computer Packages for Home use include everything needed for under $1,000.
If your interest is in purchasing a new Personal Computer (PC) or laptop, there are a few considerations for comparison.
|
| Processor speed (GHz # - the higher the faster) |
| Amount of Memory (MB # - more = the higher the #) |
| Hard Drive Size (GB # - more = the higher the #) |
| |
"Options" (which increase the price but may be included):
* Flat Screen Monitor (the newest technology - saves space)
* CRT Monitor (Viewable Area/Dot Pitch/Resolution)
- CD-Writer (speed matters)
- DVD player
- Modem (speed)
- Type of Operating System Installed
- Extra Software Packages included
- Type of printer (color with dual cartridges)
- Front-mounted Ports / type (USB at least)
- Network Interface (for home networks or High-Speed Internet)
|
| |
Other considerations include:
"Expandability" whether the unit can be upgraded with a faster processor, more memory, additional bays for Hard Drives, and extra & type of adapter slots
"Warranty" the length of time and type of service, on-site or mail-in, to expect from the manufacturer, and the cost of extending the warranty
"Internet Service Provider" Sometimes included which supposedly reduces the price of the computer. Sometimes they offer rebates, but trap you into a long contract with an expensive ISP. Check in e-Lynks to locate ISP options in your area. Shop around before agreeing.

If your Computer or accessory is experiencing problems, and your product is still under Warranty, it is strongly recommended that the Manufacturer Technical Support Staff be contacted to resolve problems encountered or to upgrade your unit. Tampering with a unit that is under warranty may void the warranty.
Most Home units carry a 1 year warranty while others may be covered under mail-in warranty for up to 3 years.
If you are unsure if your unit is under warranty, it can't hurt to check with the manufacturer first.
There may be a part that has been determined to have a manufacturing defect which can be replaced free.
There may be a downloadable upgrade or driver revision available whether or not the unit is under warranty.
Some problems take a while to surface, others may have seen it, and a fix is in the works.
Several Manufacturers provide a plethora of information including diagnostics on their support web site to download and test the unit.
Others provide a Troubleshooting flow chart, or the opportunity to send away for a Diagnostic CD.
