Though they are on opposite sides as the city seeks to force the sale of a church property, the case draws Nick and Lulu into a clandestine sexual encounter. As Alvin tries to convince a radio talk show host to let him argue the church's position, Burton and new attorney Claire Stasiak begin preparing Scott Davenport to testify about the shooting of drug dealer Colin Bennett. Yet, as Scott continues to have reservations about claiming self-defense, the now-crippled Bennett asks Nick to help find him a place to live. When Lulu has a dinner date, Nick asks Claire to dinner so he can check out the competition. But when Nick and Lulu sneak off for another tryst, Claire leaves, only to find Davenport waiting outside. Meanwhile, a problem with Burton's credit card reveals that Mary Gressler's teenaged granddaughter, Shannon, stole it.

After learning that Davenport, a longtime member of the congregation, opposes the city's offer, Claire is stunned when he tries to kiss her. After taking Shannon home to find that Mary has died, Burton tells social worker Laurie Solt that he wants to be the teenaged girl's foster parent. Turning over Colin's request to James, Nick learns of his dad's efforts to gain custody of Shannon. Yet, once Burton persuades the court to agree, he finds that having a teenager in the house again is going to be a test. Meanwhile, after agreeing to a romantic evening at Lulu's house, Nick suddenly gets cold feet and leaves just as they are about to go to bed.

After Davenport pulls her over for speeding, Claire tells Burton about the citation, but not the kiss. But learning that Davenport has fallen in love with her, Burton lectures Claire for not telling him the whole truth before offering her a fulltime job. And when he gets to argue the church's case on the radio, Alvin ends up undermining their bargaining position. Finally, after assigning Davenport to Jake, Burton worries that he won't hold up under cross-examination and negotiates a settlement. So, as Davenport faces the possible end of his career, a win in court prompts Nick to withdraw the city's offer as he and Lulu continue their secret affair.
