Nuriko is a happy and outgoing man, and the thrid of the Suzaku Seishi to appear. "She" first appears as a princess at the royal palace,and saves Miaka and Tamahome from being crushed underneath a fallen building,nonchanlty flinging away the pieces of large debis. Nuriko quickly confesses affection for Tamahome, and sets Miaka aflame with jealousy. Nuriko is less than willing to join Miaka as a Seishi, and goes out of "her" way to torment Miaka in any way possible. Nuriko, at first, loved to tease Miaka, going to nearly any extent to trick Miaka and make Miaka hate "her". Of course, this is only because Nuriko "her"self is jealous.

Nuriko is deeply in love with Hotohori, the Emperor of Konan, and dislikes Miakas closeness to him. As a result, Nuriko deliberately chases after Tamahome for revenge. As soon as Nuriko learns Miaka is not interested in Hotohori, however, "she" serves to do "her" best getting Miaka and Tamahome together, thereby leaving Hotohori for "her"self. Nuriko, as Miaka and the others soon learn, has one rather large obstacle to winning Hotohoris affections. That is, Nuriko is a man.

Despite the fact that Nuriko is essentially forced at first to become a protector of Miaka, the two soon become the best of friends and Nuriko accepts his position as a Suzaku Seishi willingly. Nuriko is a strong person, with a powerful sense of self and duty. Nuriko would do just about anything for a friend, and the well-being of others is one of his chief concerns. Nuriko likes to be happy, and likes to see the people who are important to him happy. Nuriko is an optimist who almost always sees the bright side of things, and even when he is down, he never gives up. Nuriko is definitely not a quitter and is always ready to keep trying when something doesnt work out.

Nuriko is a strong friend to Miaka and the Seishi, and is thought of as a brother to all of them. Nuriko offers a shoulder to lean on in times of crises, and is always providing care and support. His courage and willingness to accept and deal with all situations makes him an admirable person. He takes things in stride, but this does not mean he is an unfeeling person or cannot be hurt. Nuriko is open to others, honest, and straightforward, allowing him insight into the emotions of his friends, and permits him to help them.

Nuriko carries a sad past with him. As a child, Nuriko had a beloved little sister named Kourin (the name he first introduced himself under). Although Kourin was a year younger than Nuriko, they were so much alike that people thought they were twins. One day, the young ten-year-old Nuriko was out for a walk, and Kourin raced to catch up with him. As Nuriko turned around, he saw Kourin step out onto the street, just as a team of speeding, runaway horses appeared. Before Nurikos eyes, Kourin was trampled to death on the street. In order to keep Kourins spirit with him, Nuriko "went" gay, dressing as his sister, letting himself take her place.

Nuriko, through Miakas kindness and their mutual understanding of one another, is able to finally put his sisters death aside, and accept it. Nuriko finds himself in love with Miaka, believing that Kourin would have been like her if she had lived. Nuriko admires Tamahome and Miaka's love for each other.
