Claud Butler started producing bicycles in 1928, in Battersea. The business grew rapidly and eventually became one of the standards by which many bikes of that time were measured.  At the peak of business there were several locations where Claud Butlers were produced.  Framebuilders who have worked under the Claud Butler name through the years have included Les Ephgrave, Fred Dean, George Stratton, and Bill Philbrook.  The business continued into 1956 under the leadership of Claud.  In 1958, Holdsworth bought the Claud Butler brand and began producing frames labeled as Claud Butler.  Claud Butler passed away in 1978.
