Etobicoke High School was brought into existence in the fall of 1928.  Before this event, a full human skeleton was discovered while the foundation of the school was being constructed.   The school's population consisted of only two hundred students and twelve teachers, one of which was the principal himself.  In 1949, the Etobicoke Board of Education was formed and Etobicoke High School was renamed as Etobicoke Collegiate Institute.

Many interesting people have attended Etobicoke Collegiate: Marney McBean, a gold-medalist rower at the Olympics; Ken Dryden, the current President and General Manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs; Jeff Healy, a rock musician in the Jeff Healy Band; and Harold Ship, the founder of the former Ship Centre.  As well, Mr. Graham, who is presently a guidance counselor at E.C.I., and the recently retired teachers, Mr. Pautz and Ms. Fountain, were all graduates of Etobicoke Collegiate.

Grades nine through OAC are taught at Etobicoke Collegiate Institute.  Etobicoke Collegiate offers a dental program, a full technical program, an English as a Second Language (ESL) program and a special services program.
