Against His Wishes Hollywood Heavyweight DiCaprio Not Influential Enough to Prevent Berlin Screening A controversial film with actor Leonardo DiCaprio called Don’s Plum has landed a prime spot at the February 2001 Berlin Film Festival. (Rose Prouser/Reuters) A 4-year-old film that Leonardo DiCaprio doesn’t want you to see will be prominently featured at the Berlin Film Festival in early February. The actor and his pal Tobey Maguire even went to court to prevent Gen-X indie Don’s Plum, which they filmed over six days between 1995 and ’96, from seeing the light of day. The pair sued the team of Plum filmmakers last year and settled out of court, successfully preventing the film from being shown in the United States and Canada. The film, made for $100,000 by first-time director and former friend of DiCaprio R.D. Robb, is a raw, black-and-white picture largely improvised by its group of 20-something actors. Maguire, who is Plum’s leading man, apparently felt that his ad-libbed lines revealed personal details he didn’t want released on celluloid. He is said to have convinced DiCaprio to help him muzzle the picture. Producer David Stutman sued the handsome twosome to the tune of $10 million in 1998, alleging that the increasingly successful star and Maguire had purposely thwarted Plum’s chances of being sold to a studio. Both actors claimed that they never agreed to make a full-length feature intended for theatrical release. For those interested in making the trip to Germany, Don’s Plum will screen in the Berlin fest’s “Panorama” section, according to Variety. |
