According to an incident report on the Skyraider association website, Colonel Tipping was involved in a Search and Rescue (SAR) attempt of a downed pilot when he was hit by ground fire and subsequently crashed.  For more information, click over to the the following URL:  http://www.skyraider.org/skyassn/sartapes/scotch3/scot3.htm

They also have a tape of the rescue attempt (in RealPlayer format) that the Colonel was involved in when he was shot down.

There is also a squadron photo displayed on the Skyraider association website as well.  Surf on over to http://skyraider.org/skyassn/spadgrup/wingrps.htm and scroll down to the 6th ACS portion of the page.  According to the text, Major Tipping is the 2nd from the last man, standing in the third row.
