Back in August of 2000, Dr. Vertigo and Ernesto Toscano teamed up to bring a riviting tale of suspence and intrigue to Ladi Vi's. This storyline was known as the 'Cruise of Deception' Both fans of the original cruise on Days of Our Lives, Dr. Vertigo and Ernesto decided to rewrite their own version of the elaborate storyline for the club.
It all began when many in Salem received mysterious invitations aboard a cruise ship leaving from Naples for a 2 week voyage. The event was supposedly held at the request of Renee DuMonde, more than a decade after her death, to attone for her mistreatment of many in Salem. However this reasoning did not sit well with many of the guests who suspected an alterior motive behind the entire cruise. Shane Donovan noticed the eerie similarities between this cruise and the one held by Ernesto Toscano aboard the Loretta 10 years ago, as did Julie, Bo and Hope who all feared that history would inevitably repeat itself.
As time passed, their fears grew stronger when several more events aboard the cruise ship began to mimic the one held by Ernesto. First, a masquerade ball, followed by a disturbing play with the same title as one performed aboard the Loretta, "Fatal Passions".
At this point, all guests were convinced that the cruise was a set up from the begining, and demanded to know the true identity of the ship's host. All were shocked when a very much alive Ernesto Toscano revealed himself to be responsible for inviting them aboard the doomed cruise liner and explained how he planned to do away with each of his enemies. One by one, he promised the guests a most horrifying demise until he finally arrived at Hope who he planned to use as his assistant for his final act. Suddenly the ship went dark and four shots were fired. When the lighting returned, Ernesto was revealed to have been shot, and fell overboard, but the terror aboard the Renee DuMonde was only about to begin. It was shortly afterwards that Tony DiMera, who later turned out to be Andre DiMera, introduced himself to the astonished crowd by firing a shot at Roman Brady. "Tony" then explained how he faked his death years ago only to plot his vengeance aboard this very cruise ship which he named after his true love, Renee DuMonde. He went on to inform the guests that the ship was rigged with explosives and he planned to leave them all to die. All except for Anna DiMera who would be allowed to escape with him aboard his helicopter. Anna refused to leave without Kimberly DiMera whom she believed to be her daughter at the time and forced her aboard the chopper.
However "Tony's motives were once again tainted by evil as he only planned for his own escape. Grabbing Anna by the throat, the malicious madman tossed her out of the helicopter. He then turned to a frightened Kimberly and explained how he would be exiting the chopper himself via parachute and leaving her behind to crash. With that, "Tony" bid her adieu and jumped out of the helicopter which crashed on a small island.
Meanwhile, the remaining guests were forced to face their deadliest fears as the Renee DuMonde exploded. With the assistance of Shane Donovan, all guests were saved and brought back to Salem University Hospital.
During the course of the fiasco, Kate and Victor drugged Sami, nearly causing her death, Princess Katerina Von Leuschner a.k.a Carly Manning made her return, and Billie Reed revealed herself to be responsible for her mother's near fatal shooting several months earlier.
