On 1 October 1918 at Abancourt, France, Sergeant Merrifield attacked two machine-gun emplacements single-handed, when they were holding up the advance of his platoon. Dashing from shell-hole to shell-hole he killed the occupants of the first post and, although wounded, continued to attack the second post and with a bomb killed the occupants. He refused to be evacuated and led his platoon until he was again severely wounded.

  • a detachment of the 49th Regiment of Foot was stationed at Fort St. Joseph. The number designation of today's unit is derived from the original Regiment of Foot
  • 1862
    • One Rifle Company consisting of 3 officers and 81 other ranks was formed under Capt. John Davidson is Sault Ste. Marie. At that time, Sault Ste. Marie was the western end of upper Canada.

Became a training ship in 1949.
Sold for scrap in 1950.
