You should first have an understanding of what hyperspectral imagery is before we discuss how it works and its possible uses. Though hyperspectral imagery technology has been around for over 20 years now, it has only recently transitioned from government laboratories and research centers to the general marketplace in the areas of agriculture, medicine, oil and mineral exploration, and military surveillance (2). Even the word, hyperspectral, has yet to appear in any standard dictionary, as it is a word that combines the words "hyper" and "spectral" to describe this relatively new technology. However, the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary defines the two separate words, hyper and spectral, as "excessive" (3) and "of, relating to, or made by a spectrum" (4) respectively. Excessive spectrum describes exactly what hyperspectral imagery is--it's an image containing an excessive amount of electromagnetic spectrum data, otherwise known as "spectral" data. |
