Mortal Background/History: (QotD) Maharet was born into a family of witches that lived at the foot of Mount Carmel, Palestine (modern day Israel); along with her twin sister, Mekare. Maharet and her twin had the power to make rain and attract spirits. In a cannibalistic ceremony, where Maharet was going to eat her dead mother's heart, Akasha's soldiers forced them away. The twin sisters were at the age of 25 during this time. The soldiers brought Maharet and her sister to Akasha and Enkils court, where Akasha interrogated them with questions concerning the supernatural. Akasha was not happy with the answers she received and had them raped by her court steward, Khayman, to prove that they have no power. From her rape, Maharet gave birth to Khaymans baby, Miriam.
Maharet and her sister are ordered before the court of Akasha and Enkil a second time, but only to discover that the King and Queen have been transformed into something not human vampires. When Maharet and her sister explain to the Kind and Queen about how they came to be what they were, the twins are sentenced to die. Akasha ordered to have Maharet's eyes plucked out for the evil which she envisioned. Maharet quickly consumed her eyes when they were gouged out.
When imprisoned again, Khayman came to the Maharet and her sister, offering them the Dark Gift which Akasha and Enkil had forced upon him. Maharet refused at first, but relented once she learned her sister was accepting the Dark Gift.
Immortal Background/History:
Several hours later, she is separated from her sister when sealed inside a stone coffin and set adrift the sea.
Maharet remained in the coffin, until the water that seeped through opened its lid and spent the next millennium searching for Mekare. During this time he borrows the eyes of human so she can see and makes other vampires, Thorne and Eric.
Maharet also keeps tracks of her daughters (Mariam) descendents, and records their history.
In 1949, she becomes the protector of Jessica Reeves, a descendent of her family, whose mother had died. Maharet secretly looks over Jessica, guiding and guarding her life, only once allowing Jessica to come visit her.
In 1984, after Lestats concert, Maharet saves Jessica (she had become injured) by giving her the DarkGift.
When Akasha awakens, Maharet gathered up the remaining vampires that were spared from Akasha's destruction and tell them the story of the twins. It was also she, with her quick thinking, that gave Mekare the brain and heart of Akasha to eat, in order to preserve the vampire race.
(MtD)After David becomes a vampire, Maharet spends time with him looking through her treasures and documents. She also passed on Lestat's call to David. She returns Lestat's eye to him, after he visits heaven and hell, but with a message from Memnoch. She then chains him down, because she fears that he might do much damage as a result of his misery and confusion. Maharet also assists David in recording Lestat's tales. Finally, once Maharet thinks that Lestat has calmed down, she unchained himand left.
(B&G) We last see Maharet when her fledgling, Thorne, destroys Santino in an indirect punishment for what shed done to Thorne. Thornes eyes are removed, and are given to Maharet; she no longer requires the eyes of mortals. She then chains up Thorne with the same chains that she used with Lestat.
Reason for the DarkGift: Maharet accepted the Dark Gift from Khayman, with much reluctance, in order to aid her sister in gaining revenge upon Akasha.
Novels: Appeared in Queen of the Damned and Memnoch the Devil; was present during the ending of Blood and Gold.
