QUEEN MOTHER HONOURED Fifty-six years after sending relief supplied to a remote and devasted Russian city she has never seen, Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother was made a honorary citizen of Volgograd, formerly Stalingrad, for the aid she have its people at the end of the Second World War - the first honorary citizenship the city has presented to a non-Russian. During the ceremony in Clarence House in March, Yuri Chekhov, the Mayor of Volgograd, accompanied by the Russian Ambassador, conferred the honour in recognition of the Queen Mother's help in sending food, blankets and medicine to survivors of a city devastated by one of the bloodiest battles of the war. The Battle of Stalingrad, which lasted from July 1942 until February 1943, killed 300,000 Germans and many more Russians, but halted the advance of the German Sixth Army. Mr Checkhov said that the city had never forgotten her help.
