Maurice Richard Soiree
ROY DUPUIS' INTERVIEW AT THE MAURICE RICHARD SOIREE
Was this part very challenging?
RD- It was challenging because we didn't have a lot of time to shoot, we had to rush.
- But was it especially challenging to portray someone so prestigious, nearly mythical in the Quebec's people heart?
RD- I didn't really know Maurice Richard, I mean I never saw him play. I belong to the generation of Guy Lafleur, Jean Belibeau, Ivan Cournoyer (translator' note : I apologise for the inevitable misspellings I know
nothing about hockey), that group of players. So, I didn't admire him as a player, of course I knew about the legend, the myth, what he stood for. I met Maurice Richard for the first time during the shooting of "La
Minute du Patrimoine". Robert Guy Scully (Translator's note : the director) told me "Don't worry, he doesn't talk much so don't be worried if he doesn't talk to you" and the exact opposite happened. We got on well immediately. He's a very humble and simple man. It was as if I had known him for a very long time. From then on, I never really had problems portraying him. I felt his energy easily. And that's what I
tried to portray his energy instead of doing an imitation.
- Did he come on the set?
RD- During the shooting of La minute du Patrimoine", he was there nearly everyday. For this series, he only came at the end. Of course, it was after being hospitalised.
- Did he ever correct the way you portrayed him?
RD- No, it never happened. But he never really watched a scene being shot. He came once, maybe out of respect or just to be there. But he never really watched, he didn't want to. He wanted to let us do what we
wanted, I think.
- What are his main characteristics? We heard a lot about his passion, his determination, his look.
RD- His integrity. His passion too, I think. He was a man who knew where he belonged and who had a passion and his passion was to score. And he accomplished his life goal this way. His humility too, his integrity. He's someone who is there, at his place.
- I heard you didn't necessarily enjoyed TV series but I think you enjoyed this one.
RD- (laughing) : Yes.
- It's demanding for an actor to shoot a TV series, you have to get up early in the morning, you finish late at night.
RD- I was already shooting another TV series when I shot this one. We managed to organise the schedule so I could shoot the Maurice Richard series. It took us 6 or 7 days, it was supposed to be longer but we ran
into problems and so the shooting was shorter. Of course, a series is a very demanding job but I was already shooting another one, so...
- What matters is that you're happy with the result.
RD- So far, yes, I didn't see it all yet but we'll see.
