Check the steering for excessive backlash;
which may indicate worn swivel pins and bearings in the front wheel
assembly.
A certain amount of free-play in the steering
should be expected and can usually be reduced by adjustment at the
steering box. Check that the steering box is secure on its mounting
bracket and that the steering relay is secure in its housing in the
front chassis crossmember. Linkage is by tie-rod and ball joint and
the latter should be checked for wear. The relay often leaks oil but
this is not generally considered to be serious.
Although hard-wearing, the Land Rover’s
steering components can, of course, get damaged so check carefully for
this. Also, look out for leaks from the steering box, though this is
not too serious a fault; on later Land Rovers fitted with power
assisted steering however, a major fluid leak from the power steering
system can be expensive to rectify, so check carefully before
purchase.
