Via Rainbow Beach and Coloured Sands...

On our way to Fraser Island... the road is actually a beach, with traffic signs and everything!!!

Coffee break on Rainbow Beach. This beach is not only a road, but also used as a beach by campers, fishers and swimmers. The name Rainbow Beach or Coloured Sands comes from the bright coloration of the sand and cliffs which range from bright red over orange and yellow to green and bright blue (sea). An Aboriginal myth explains how the rainbow came down to the beach.

Wreck of the Cherry Venture on the way to Fraser Island.

...to Fraser Island

The ferry to and from Fraser Island. As there are no bitumen roads neither on the coast, nor on Fraser Island, getting on and off the ferry can be a real adventure already... again, a 4WD is needed to get through here. Better do not get stuck when the high tide is about to come...

Funny red eyed seagull.

Dingos are very common on Fraser Island. They are not dangerous for humans if you follow a few safety precautions. They can indeed be dangerous for children, however.

Rainforest on Fraser Island. Incredible what a vegetation has developped on this pure sand island.

The water in the creeks makes absolutely no noise due to the absence of stones - there is only soft white sand...

All water on the island is pure rain water.

Gerhard on a rainforest walk on Fraser Island.

A strangler fig on a tree. The parasite will eventually kill the tree.

Huge trees in this rainforest, some look like concrete columns...

...some have interesting parasites.

There are only sand pists on Fraser Island. Their conditions vary very much: better when it has rained, difficult when it is dry. Without 4WD, you would not get far in any case...

Lake McKenzie, one of more than 30 rain water lakes on Fraser Island. A perfect spot for a swim. The water is crystal clear. It is much better to swim in this paradise than in the ocean as there are many sharks in the sea - that would be very dangerous.

Sabine in Lake McKenzie - this sand is just incredibly soft and white, fantastic!

Paradise!
