Gwalia
Gwalia was a lively town during the gold rush. Today it is an outdoor museum, showing
the way of life of that time. A fascinating journey through time! This town reminds me of
the world Albert B. Facey describes in his autobiographical book "A fortunate life"!
Gerhard playing an old piano - but careful, the chair... chrk...
All the poor fellows which came to seek their fortune in the goldfields had to go
there by foot, several hundreds of kilometres, sleeping in swags (like we did) - and water
was as precious as gold before the water pipeline was finally built!
At those times, people had to build their houses out of any material which was
available. And all of this material had to be carried there, brought in wheelbarrows,...
The former hotel of Gwalia. Once thousands of people lived around here in the hectic gold rush era at
the turn of the last century - now just a few artifacts remain to mark the passing of a
golden era.
A dunny or outhouse (no longer in use, don't believe Gerhard!).
The store - with all sorts of nice (original) things in the windows just like 1920.
Living in an own house was luxury; most people just lived...
... like this, in a modest guesthouse room.
