SCENE ONE (int.)

Opening Theme music

DOCTOR

(cold fury in his voice)

What have you done?

KANDY

It worked, ha, it worked! It actually worked.

A heavy steel door opens

A laser rifle powers up with an electric whine

KORVELLIAN SOLDIER

Intruders, stand still.

Click of a communicator

VOICE

Control here

KORVELLIAN SOLDIER

Two infiltrators in Barrack room Theta, will keep them covered until backup arrives.

VOICE

Back up should be with you shortly

KORVELLIAN SOLDIER

You heard Control, don’t give me an excuse to use this.

KANDY

I can think of about fifty sarcastic put downs right now.

DOCTOR

(condemningly)

You’ve rewritten Time, replaced a whole species with another one.  This culture sprang up in place of the original inhabitants.  (becomes fascinated) A slightly different evolutionary branch that original died out now thrives.

KANDY

(yawns)

Spare me the lecture

DOCTOR

We’ll be lucky if we get out of this room alive.  It looks like we’re in some sort of barracks.  Listen, you can hear the sounds of troops outside

The sounds of troops outside

KORVELLIAN SOLDIER

With any luck it’s your firing squad.

KANDY

With this device I can recreate the Universe as I see fit.

DOCTOR

No!  No one has that right.  That weapon must be destroyed.  You got lucky this time, but how many planets will you leave barren and lifeless?  No one has the right to do what you’re planning (beat) no one.

KANDY

I could get rid of you now, if you like.

DOCTOR

My people built that obscenity.  I doubt they’d let themselves be vulnerable to its power,

SCENE TWO (int.)

Heavy machinery in the distance

KLEP

(speaks up over the noise)

What happened?

ADAM

MMMM MMMM MM MMMM?

KLEP

Allow me,

ADAM

I said, how should I know.  What’s going on?

KLEP

I don’t know.

ADAM

Well at least we agree on our shared ignorance.  Want to form a political party?

KLEP

It’s as if we moved to another planet

ADAM

Or a planet moved to us

KLEP

Where are we anyway?

ADAM

I think I need a hospital not a game of twenty questions

KLEP

I will assist you.

ADAM

So you don’t miss out on my suffering?

KLEP

You know me so well, few really do.

ADAM

Actually I do, I went to a comprehensive school for five years.  You remind me of my old headmaster.

KLEP

We should find out what has happened.  The first rule of covert action is to gather as much information as possible.  Political disposition, public concerns, military capabilities…

ADAM

If I asked you to stop talking would you listen to me?

KLEP

Perhaps we should be quiet, so that we do not draw attention to ourselves?

SCENE THREE (int.)

KORVELLIAN INQUISITOR

 (speaks with a hissing rasp)

You are a political agent.

DOCTOR

I never meddle in politics, it’s bad for my cholesterol.

KORVELLIAN INQUISITOR

You were detained before you could perform any acts of sabotage

DOCTOR

I’m really quite nice once you get to know me.

KORVELLIAN INQUISITOR

Your species is puzzling.  You have a high level of intelligence, for a mammal

DOCTOR

You’re not so bad yourself.  Nice wing casing paint.  I’m the Doctor.

KORVELLIAN INQUISITOR

Your sabotage attempt has been thwarted and now you shall be questioned.

DOCTOR

A wise man knows that he knows nothing

KORVELLIAN INQUISITOR

What is the disposition of your fleet?  How long before the invasion?

DOCTOR

I’m quite sure I don’t know what you mean.

KORVELLIAN INQUISITOR

We are at war.

DOCTOR

I’m sorry to hear that.

KORVELLIAN INQUISITOR

The sorrow is yours, mammal.  Most of your kind has been slaughtered.

DOCTOR

Really?  How impolite of you.  Anyway I like to think I’m one of a kind.

KORVELLIAN INQUISITOR

I will now use the mental scanner to reveal your thoughts to me

DOCTOR

I wouldn’t advise that, on second thoughts why not use your most advanced model?

KORVELLIAN INQUISITOR

The process is quite painful, there is unavoidable damage to the nerve tissues of creatures such as yourself.

DOCTOR

I’ve suffered worse.  This décor is not exactly appealing you know.

KORVELLIAN INQUISITOR

I’d tell you to relax but there’s no point.

Bleeps as machine is activated

DOCTOR

This isn’t so bad.

More bleeps

KORVELLIAN INQUISITOR

That was level nine, this is level fourteen

DOCTOR

No, mustn’t think about thinking

KORVELLIAN INQUISITOR

Level twenty

More bleeps

DOCTOR

(yells in pain)

No…

SCENE FOUR

The buzzing of insects fills the air

ADAM

Ok, now this is not the planet we were just on.

KLEP

They’re Korvellians, my people have been at war with them for decades.

ADAM

I take it your people have never seen Starship Troopers?

KLEP

We have plenty of troopers on our starships.

ADAM

Was there an invasion?  But the room changed.  One minute it was Bates Motel without the cheery décor and the next it’s like ICI Wilton.  That can’t just happen, unless…

KLEP

(curious)

Unless what?

ADAM

Unless somebody starts messing about with time.  Oh crap, I knew this would happen.  It’s me, the Doctor warned me about changing things.

KLEP

I don’t think reality can be affected by anyone as stupid as you, no offence.

ADAM

One single action can have drastic consequences.  I got this whole three hour lecture with interval from the Doctor.  He’s going to leave me here as punishment, I know it.

KLEP

I’m not so sure.  I had a report that Kandy was a Korvellian spy.  Biogenetically adapted at birth buy her human foster parents to look like she was their own.  It fits, somehow she’s changed time to ensure that her people have gained dominance of the galaxy.

ADAM

So I’m not responsible?  Phew.  Oh well never mind, I guess I’ll just find the Doctor and leave.

KLEP

We’re at war, you have to do your duty.

ADAM

I don’t think so.  This is in my future, or maybe it’s the past?  I should really ask the Doctor about when we are.

KLEP

No, you must help me.

ADAM

I’ve got a better idea.  How about I get my own back for these broken ribs?

KLEP

Stupid child.  I’m a trained unarmed combat expert.

ADAM

(in pain)

You can stop trying to break my arm any time, no pressure.

KLEP

(coldly)

You will do as I say (beat) or I will kill you.

ADAM

Yep, that’s exactly what my headmaster used to say to us in the morning assembly.

SCENE FIVE (int.)

DOCTOR

(groans)

My head, I hope I got a receipt for that.

Sound of door opening

ADAM

He’s in here.  Boy Doctor I’m glad to see you.

DOCTOR

I think I’m seeing Adam’s again.

ADAM

It is me.  C’mon snap out of it.

DOCTOR

Can I buy a vowel?

KLEP

Leave him here

DOCTOR

Sally?

ADAM

I’ve always thought of myself as the good looking one but that’s taking it too far.

KLEP

His brain has been addled by that device.  Kill him now, it’ll be kinder

ADAM

I’ll help him.  Come on Doctor, stand up.

DOCTOR

Are we going somewhere?

KLEP

I don’t believe this.  I should leave you two here.

ADAM

Ladies and Gentlemen, the winner of the humanitarian of the year goes to…

DOCTOR

I’m feeling better now.

ADAM

Good, now how many fingers am I holding up?

DOCTOR

Erm (beat) seven (beat) teen?

KLEP

Ok, I’m off

ADAM

Go on, get out of here.

DOCTOR

Adam, you’re bleeding on the carpet.  Stop it, I just cleaned it last week.

KLEP

I had to ask him a few questions.

DOCTOR

Did he hurt you Adam?

ADAM

It’s just a few broken bones, some fairly deep cuts and a possibly dislocated thumb.

DOCTOR

(sharply)

Get out of here.

ADAM

I’m sorry

DOCTOR

Not you, him.  Get out of my sight Klep, now.

KLEP

Fine, I was going anyway.  I’m going to sort things out here myself.

ADAM

Don’t let the door hit your swollen ego on the way out.

DOCTOR

I need to sit back down.

ADAM

What happened?  Was it me?  Did I do something wrong?  Mess up time in some way?

DOCTOR

It’s not you, this time.  No.  It was Kandy.  Somehow she figured out how to work the Timelance.  She used a sample of Sornaxian DNA as a reference and removed the whole species out of existence.

ADAM

Klep said that these people are Korvellians.

DOCTOR

Yes, a rather brutal race I’m afraid.

ADAM

She’s really a bug?

DOCTOR

That’s a rather offensive way of putting it.

ADAM

Klep said her adoptive parents changed her appearance when she was a baby, so that she’d grow up and develop like a human.

DOCTOR

It’s an outlawed practice, but given the state of the war I’m sure both sides are using it to mask their spies.

ADAM

So what do we do?  Humans are losing this war.  Sornax Four must be important somehow.

DOCTOR

I don’t have all the answers.  (grunts as he stands up)  However I know someone who might be able to tell us some answers.  Like why she deliberately carried the genocide of an entire species.

ADAM

PMT?

SCENE SIX (int.)

KORVELLIAN INQUISITOR

 (shrill with disbelief)

These readings are most unusual.

KANDY

I feel your pain, now let go of me.

SCENE SEVEN (ext.)

A wind picks up outside

Insect noises pick up

KORVELLIAN SOLDIER

An escaped prisoner?  And I’m feeling hungry too…

KLEP

(surprised)

Wait!

SCENE EIGHT (int.)

KORVELLIAN INQUISITOR

I must inform command of this.

The door opens

ADAM

(shouts)

Get off her!

DOCTOR

Don’t hurt him, compared with her he’s quite nice and friendly.

Crunch of exoskeleton

Splat of insectoid innards hitting the floor

ADAM

Eeuw.  Smells like Grandma!

KANDY

Get me out of this torture chamber

DOCTOR

Why?  Why give you a chance when you gave none at all to your victims?

KANDY

Oh, that.

DOCTOR

Yes, that.

KANDY

I had to be sure the thing worked.  Besides the Baron was planning to kill me.  As soon as he found out what it was he would have killed us all.  I don’t know about you but when the whole planet wants you dead sometimes you have to kill the planet to survive.

DOCTOR

You don’t mean that.

KANDY

No I don’t.  Ok.  I sell weapons.  It’s what I do.  You can’t be afflicted with morality.

DOCTOR

But you are.

KANDY

Stop reminding me of it.

ADAM

We can’t stay in here debating ethics.  Kandy made a mistake.  Can you fix it Doctor?

DOCTOR

I don’t know.  That’s forbidden technology.

KANDY

Adam’s right, we can debate this once we’re out of this place.  (bursts into tears)  I killed them all, everyone, a whole planet.

DOCTOR

Relax, take a deep breath.  Now the lock is a simple one.  I just need this (beat) hairclip.

ADAM

We have to hurry, in case sleeping ugly’s friends show up.

DOCTOR

There we are.

Stone scraping against a metal table

ADAM

What’s this?

DOCTOR

I’ll take that.  This is what caused the changes to the time stream.  I have to figure out how to reverse the settings.

SCENE NINE (ext.)

KLEP

I am an undercover agent.  You must help me dispose of the infiltrator I followed here.

KORVELLIAN SOLDIER

I shall aid you.

SCENE TEN

Running feet on loose ground

ADAM

A brisk walk you said

KANDY

This is an easy pace

ADAM

You haven’t had somebody try to reshape your body with a large chunk of wood.

DOCTOR

The TARDIS should be nearby

The running stops

ADAM

That’s it.  I can’t go any further.

DOCTOR

Rest here, I’ll go and get the TARDIS.

KANDY

I shall stay with Adam.

ADAM

(breathing is laboured & wheezy)

I’ll be ok, you go with the Doctor.

KANDY

I’m not leaving your side

SCENE ELEVEN (ext.)

KELP

There he is.  One good shot.  Burn his image into your mind, never forget it.  He’s the most dangerous enemy you’ve ever faced.  He is a monster who would kill our children without a care.

KORVELLIAN SOLDIER

Aiming now

A shot rings out

SCENE TWELVE (ext.)

KANDY

(joyful)

The Doctor’s not the only one who can do magic tricks

ADAM

(taken aback)

What’s that thing for?  The Doctor said it was dangerous.

KANDY

Yes, it’s very dangerous.  I have to figure out a way of reversing what I did.

A shot rings out in the distance

ADAM

Did you hear that?

KANDY

Stay here

SCENE THIRTEEN

Howling wind

a desolate cry of an alien bird

the sounds of running feet

a stumble

a grunt of pain and exertion

a gunshot

a cry of anguish over an injury

another gunshot

a louder cry

a body slumping to the floor

footsteps approaching.

KORVELLIAN SOLDIER

The target has been eliminated

KLEP

Confirm the identity

The body being turned over

KORVELLIAN SOLDIER

It’s the Doctor, he’s dead

KELP

Finally.  Somehow I find it almost an anti climax.  Let me hold the weapon that slew this foul creature

KORVELLIAN SOLDIER

This shall go in a museum

Another shot, from close range

KLEP

You really shouldn’t be so trusting.

SCENE FOURTEEN (ext.)

KANDY

(shocked)

The Doctor?

(Angry)

Shot in the back?

KLEP

(faking pain)

He did it.  That Korvellian monster.  We fought, I killed him.  I think he hurt me.  My side is…too much pain.

KANDY

No.  The Doctor was a kind man.  I must undo this by myself now.

KLEP

Give me that.

KANDY.

No, it’s my fault.  Must erase the Korvellians from existence.  It’s the only way.

KLEP

Don’t do it.

ADAM

Doctor?

KLEP

He’s dead, boy.

KANDY

There.

Humming of ancient power

ADAM

What’s it doing?  My ears just popped.

KANDY

Must set things right, get rid of these creatures.

ADAM

To stop a war that you started?

Power builds up audibly

KLEP

She’s insane.  She’s one of them too.

ADAM

Turn it off Kandy, you’re a Korvellian.

Louder and louder pulses of energy

KANDY

(surprised)

No, I’m human.

KLEP

You were altered, by your parents.  You were born one of those (beat) things.

ADAM

Don’t do it Kandy, I…I love you.

A wave of vibrational energy washes over everything with a whoosh

SCENE FIFTEEN (int.)

The TARDIS hum

DOCTOR

Ah there you are Adam, I was thinking we could visit a rather interesting planet.

ADAM

(upset)

What is it now?

DOCTOR

What’s wrong?

ADAM

Nothing, I’m fine.  Just as long as that planet’s not Sornax Four.

DOCTOR

Why should we go there?  It’s a lifeless ball of rock.

ADAM

What about the Korvellian home world?

DOCTOR

I’ve never heard of that species.  Why do you ask?

ADAM

(trying to sound casual)

It’s nothing, it was just a dream I had  I guess two wrongs really don’t make a right.  All those people, gone…

DOCTOR

(slightly concerned)

Sounds like a nightmare to me.

ADAM

It was Doctor.  I’m just glad things are fine now.  So tell me about this planet?

DOCTOR

(more concerned)

Are you sure you’re feeling fine?  You look like you’ve seen a ghost.

ADAM

(reflective and saddened)

Maybe I did.
