We have very little on John Johnstone and doubt we'll learn much more. In
1883 a John Johnston(e) was adopted by Samuel McGonigle and named William B. McGonigle.
The deed of adoption states, "Whereas the Sheltering Arms of the Protestant Episcopal
Church in the City of Philadephia has had the sole custody and maintenance of John
Johnston, a minor child whose parents are unknown . . ." A typed
deed spells the child's name Johnston, but a handwritten deed spells it Johnstone.
Further, there is no indication of the child's date of birth or age when adopted.
