Fete Accomplis

The time: 2.30pm

The date: 2nd August 2003

The place: Lucie's flat.

An ordinary afternoon in Wimbledon Village you may think, but no - unsuspecting residents of the Village became suspicious when in the early afternoon of Saturday, 2nd August they discovered the road to Lucie's flat flowing with pink balloons and shiny ribbon. They became ever more suspicious as boxes of books, cakes, jewelry and bric-a-brac began arriving by the truck-load. Even a mystic healer arrived to join the festivities. What could possibly be disturbing a sunny afternoon in sleepy Wimbledon Village?

Yes, the Carlton Summer Fete was about to begin. So, let's step inside and watch as the stall-holders setup their wares.

With Cakes at the ready Alison is all ready to keep stall-holders and visitors sustained throughout the afternoon.

Are you quite sure you three have got enough books there? Kristen, Val and Sarah run the bookstall. Well, at least if no one turns up, they've got plenty to read.

Netty sets up her 'guess the logo' competition stall. But you've set up suspiciously close to the cake stall, Netty!

The cosmetics stall girls take a break.

Jane and Penny come to lend a hand.

Vice Chair, Jeff arrives.

Time is marching on, and as the opening hour approaches, the Carlton eagerly await the arrival of our guest of honour. Who could it be?

The Carlton was honoured to have its president Miss June Whitfield CBE open the fete.

Before the opening ceremony, June Whitfield remenisces about her past performances, inspecting the tribute display produced by Lucie.

At the opening ceremony Cain Junior presents June with flowers.

With the fete now officially opened, it's time to go back inside and find out who's coming along.

Not content with simply opening the fete, June Whitfield joined shoppers visiting the various stalls.

"Come buy my lovely bric-a-brac. I've got no idea what it does, but I know you need it!"

The cake stall has a happy customer.

More happy shoppers.

Paolo, our resident silversmith takes a well earned break from the jewelry stall.

As the multitudes thronged to the fete, and the sun beat down throughout the afternoon, it was eventually time to cool down...

...so the hot tub does stirling service.

And so, the end of a glorious afternoon in Wimbledon Village. But I know what you'll be asking, all you hard nosed business men. How much did we make? Proceeds from the fete were partly to raise funds for the Carlton and partly for the Red Cross. Between them, we raised over £500!

Kirsty and Lucie - the Carlton publicity team

None of this would have been possible without the stirling efforts of Lucie and the fundraising team Ruth and Kate - and of course everyone who could give time to help out.
