Malcolm Asks Philip Morris To Pull Ads -- Minnesota Health Commissioner Jan Malcolm wants tobacco giant Philip-Morris to pull ads designed to deter children from smoking. She says the ads are produced by the same agency the company uses to advertise cigarettes, which she says represents a serious conflict of interest. Malcolm, the American Cancer Society, and officials from 17 other states are asking Phillip Morris to shelve the ads. But Philip-Morris spokesman Mike File believes the ads will stop kids from smoking, and says that criticism to the contrary is motivated by politics.

...Tobacco Litigants Face Setback - (SACRAMENTO) -- State lawmakers have rejected legislation that might have helped smokers prove the dangers of cigarettes in court. State Senator Byron Sher's bill would have allowed plaintiffs in tobacco lawsuits to introduce statistics showing the health risks associated with tobacco use. But opponents argued that the proposal would force judges to admit such evidence in cases... even when it has no credibility. The opponents of the bill prevailed.
