FACES OF IRIAN
May 1999 -- MISSION NEWS FROM
STEPHEN AND CAROLYN CROCKETT -- Vol. 6, # 1
Prayer Focus
Sunburns, dugout canoes, mosquitoes, swamps, grass huts, steamy jungles, smoky
fires, strange languages,
different foods, skin diseases, pleading eyes, and hungry hearts -- the
environment is different but the needs are the same. People need the Lord!
Please be praying for us in the months that
follow as we have been given the privilege of surveying portions of the southern part of
Irian Jaya. With thousands of people living amongst a myriad of language groups, the task
of determining strategic locations for ministry can seem overwhelming at first.
For some, the greatest need is discipleship
while others still wait to be contacted for the first time. For some, the heart need is to
be able to read the Scriptures in their own language while others still wait to hear for
the first time of their Creator's infinite love towards them. For us, we need your prayers
and God's guidance in the days ahead!
No country is without its
ups and downs. There are always good years but there are bad ones too. This last year has
been particularly rough for Indonesia. You have probably heard more about Indonesia on the
news now than ever before. If it's not the economic crisis then it's the social or
political unrest. It has been one thing after another, and it is not over yet.
The first truly democratic elections for Indonesia lies just around the
corner. There is a feeling of anticipation in the air. Could this be a new beginning, a
new birth, a new era? However, with this anticipation also comes the feeling of
uncertainty and tension. There seems to be no way of predicting what might happen next.
It is this unpredictability that has caused NTM to ask as many of our
missionaries here in Indonesia that can, to take a short term of leave. We will be staying
on for the moment but will continue to watch closely as thing develop. Should things
continue to escalate, then we to will have to leave the country until it is safe to
return. Please pray for the healing of this nation in all respects and that God's Word
will continue to go forth.
