Dr Sudhir Kumar is working as a
full-time consultant in the Division of Neurology, Apollo Hospitals, Jubilee Hills, Hyderabad. The Apollo Hospitals in Hyderabad
is the only hospital in this state and one of the few hospitals in India to be accredited by the Joint Commission International
(JCI), USA.
The Neurology department has the expertise
to treat all Neurological disorders. The Unit provides 24-hour senior Consultant coverage
for Neurology and there is a well-established stroke team for treating acute brain strokes. This
is the only department to be accredited by JCI for acute stroke treatment in India.
It is among the leading Neurology Departments
in India dealing with the diagnosis and treatment of brain, spine and nerve disorders. Specialists in Neurology and Neurosurgery
work as one cohesive department as a team, with basic neuroscientists also forming part of this team. In addition, good
facilities for physiotherapy and rehabilitation of neurological disorders are available within
the hospital campus.
The hospital has the latest
imaging modalities (Digital Substraction Angiography, Transcranial Doppler, MRI, Spiral CT, etc) and an excellent
Electrophysiology laboratory (equipped to do single fibre EMG, routine EMG and nerve conductions, EEG with video telemetry,
Evoked potentials, etc). PET-CT scan has been the latest addition to the field of brain imaging
in the hospital, which has the ability to diagnose complex neurological diseases in very early stage.
In therapeutics, the Neurology team is
an aggressive team with expertise in plasma exchange/plasmapheresis,immunotherapy with immunoglobulinds
(IVIG) and thrombolysis (intravenous and intra-arterial) for acute brain strokes. Treatment of acute
cerebral (brain) hemorrhage with recombinant Factor VII is routinely performed. 24X7 coverage
of Emergencies in Casualty by a senior consultant is available. A Neuro ICU (9-bedded) equipped to handle
all critical neuro conditions is available.
A unique feature of our department is the speed
at which we work- the diagnosis is usually established in a few hours and treatment initiated within 4 hours in most cases.
The time between admission and discharge ranges from 4-7 days for most patients. Faster treatment reduces the overall hospital
cost for the patient and we assure that there is no compromise on the quality of care. Additionally, as there are three Neurologists
forming the group, a single patient gets seen by all of them, and benefits more because of combined discussion about the diagnosis
and treatment plan of all patients.

What a job!
My job is pretty interesting but it's quite hectic. In addition to seeing
outpatients and inpatients daily, I see consultations from departments. My work also requires interpreting EEG and EMG.
I like making clinical neurologic diagnosis. I also like teaching studentss.
Busy schedule does get frustrating at times. (A job with frustrations? Hard to believe, huh?)
