Episode 31

Neither One of Us...
December 28 & 29 2004

It's sad to think we're not gonna make it
And it's gotten to the point
Where we just can't fake it
For some ungodly reason
Just won't let it die
I guess neither one of us
Wants to be the first to say good-bye

At Llanfair, Jen knocks on the front door. Cris opens the door.

Jen: Cristian. Hi.

Cristian: Hi.

Jen: I can't believe it. I can't believe you're really back.

Cristian: Yeah, yeah, I really am.

Jen: I've been meaning to come see you, to tell you the truth. I mean, actually, I've been putting it off. You know what? This was a terrible idea. Natalie hates my guts, and I'm sure you do, too, so --

Cristian: Whoa, wait, wait, jen! I don't hate you.

Jen: Then why are you acting like you don't even know who I am?

At Foxy Roxy’s, Marcie whirls around and studies her hands.

Marcie: Roxy, my nails -- they look fabulous!

Roxy: Marcie, you got any cash on you? This plastic is a no-go.

Marcie: What? The credit was denied?

Roxy: Hey, baby, I've been there and back, so I understand, believe me.

Marcie: I guess I must have maxed it out when I got that facial after I went on a little shopping spree. Well, hey, would you mind taking a look in my pocketbook, because my nails are still a little wet? All this self-improvement -- it's getting really expensive.

Roxy: Well, you know, we gals, we got to maintain. $2 -- is that all the cash you got?

Marcie: Can I pay you back later? I need this for the bus.

Roxy: No sweat, honey, but you're going to have to sign an I.O.U.

Marcie: Ok. Roxy, could you put a step on it? I'm late for work.

At the police station, Bo calls out for Marcie.

Bo: Marcie?

Nora: Obviously, she's not here yet.

Bo: I'd like to know where the hell the new equipment is.

Nora: Also not here.

Daniel: No, it's ok. I think I got this thing to work. Ok. Let's see who hid the gun that killed Paul Cramer. Did you see that?

Bo: That's it. There's Paul Cramer’s killer.

Back at Llanfair, Cris seems to be making a valiant effort to cover for a memory lapse.

Cristian: Well, what do you mean, I don't know you? Sure I do. Jen. Come on. Come, come inside.

Jen: Thank you.

Cristian: So how you doing?

Jen: I'm ok. How about you?

Cristian: What do you mean?

Jen: Well, how are you doing? I mean, I heard you were held on a ship.

Cristian: Oh, right, right. Great, great. It's good to be back here with Natalie and --

Jen: Yeah, I'm sure.

Cristian: Are you still with Rex?

Jen: Rex? No. I was married to Joe Buchanan when you --

Cristian: Oh, right, right. I'm sorry.

Jen: No, no. I don't blame you for being confused. I get confused with my relationships sometimes, too. Until Riley. You know Riley -- Riley Colson, midnight logic?

Cristian: I didn't really know him.

Jen: He reminds me of you sometimes. He's creative, talented, and really sweet.

Cristian: Thanks.

Jen: I've thought a lot about you since I heard you were back. I guess the guilt that I felt over what I did to you -- I mean, I thought it was gone, but it's not. And sometimes it makes me wonder if I'm good enough for riley. I guess what I'm trying to say is that it would really help to know that you forgive me.

At the police station, Marcie knocks on Bo’s office door.

Bo: Yeah.

Marcie: It's Marcie.

Bo: Come in.

Marcie: Hi. I got a message that you wanted to see me. I'm sorry I'm late.

Bo: What happened to the new video equipment that you were supposed to order?

Marcie: Oh. Well, I -- I was supposed to order that last week. I guess I got a little busy. I'm sorry. I'll go order it.

Bo: No, no, no, no, no. Come here, please. Sit down.

Bo: This isn't working out.

Back at Llanfair, Cristian continues to try to find and get on the same page as  Jen.

Cristian: You want me to forgive you?

Jen: Well, you sound like there wasn't any reason to.

Cristian: Well, you know, Jen, while I was on that ship, my memories were the only connection I had to my old life. I thought of them over and over again.

Jen: Including the bad ones?

Cristian: I had thought about how I almost married you because you lied to me about Al's baby and how Natalie got mixed up with Mitch Laurence because of it.

Jen: Oh, there it is again.

Cristian: What?

Jen: Hey, I didn't think it would be so easy for you to talk about.

Cristian: Well, what do you mean?

Jen: I don't know. You know what? Forget it. I'm just -- I'm happy that you're talking to me.

Cristian: Look, jen, what you did to me was nothing compared to what Tico put me through. So if my forgiveness means that much to you, you got it.

Jen: Thank you. I'm sure Natalie told you that we went at it a couple of times while you were gone.

Cristian: Yeah, she might have mentioned it.

Jen: Natalie was a mess without you. I know we will never be friends or anything, but I'm glad that you're here for her again.

Cristian: Natalie's the only good thing in my life.

At the police station, Marcie is perched on the edge of a chair in Bo’s office.  She is obviously nervous.

Bo: I've given you several warnings, Marcie, and -- but you've missed shifts, you're late most of the time.

Marcie: No, I know, and I'm really sorry. I just -- I've had all this book stuff to do, you know, getting ready for the book to be published.

Bo: No, you know what? I think that your book is just great, and I'm really happy for you, but the person that we have manning that desk out there? It has to be someone that we can rely on.

Marcie: No, I know, and I promise, Commissioner. I promise you I will do a better job if you would just let me stay on one more month, please, until the book is published.

Bo: We had this same conversation last month. Marcie, I'm going to have to let you go.

Marcie: I understand. I'm really sorry, Commissioner.

Marcie rushes out of Bo’s office and goes to her desk.  She sits down and immediately makes a phone call.

Marcie: Hi. It's me. I was just fired. No. No, the Commissioner was right. I've been completely useless lately. Thanks for saying that, but, you know, I don't know what I'm going to do without this job.

Michael walks next to Marcie’s desk.

Marcie: I -- I don't know how I'm going to pay my bills. I just -- no. No, no, no. I can't -- I can't do that. Because I don't know whether I'm going to be able to pay you back. Are you sure? Oh. Thank you. You know you're saving my life. All right. All right, we'll talk about it then. Ok, bye.

Michael: Who was that on the phone?

Marcie: Oh. That was my agent. It was Hayes.

Michael: You're borrowing money from him now?

Marcie: Michael, I just got fired, ok, and I -- I called Hayes to tell him about it, and he said that he would lend me a little bit of money.

Michael: Well, why didn't you ask me?

Marcie: Do you know how far in debt I am? Ok, I know that you don't have that kind of money.

Michael: Well, I don't think you should take a loan from this guy.

Marcie: Why not?

Michael: Because you'll feel obligated to him and then you'll do anything he says, even if it puts you in the hospital.

Marcie: No, no, it wasn't his fault, ok? I was the one -- I went a little overboard on the exercise, Michael.

Michael: A little?

Marcie: He felt really bad about it.

Michael: Do you really think that this guy gives a damn about you? You are a commodity to this guy, Marcie, a way for him to make money.

Marcie: No. No, ok? He -- he is just trying to help us both make money. Why are you always so negative?

Michael: Because I care.

Marcie: You know, the way you have been acting lately, Michael --

Michael: You know, sometimes I don't even know what we're doing together.

Marcie: Michael, I -- I love you.

Michael: No, you tried to love me. You tried to love me the way you loved Al so that you could replace him with me. It just isn't working. Is it?

Marcie looks up at him, surprised.

Michael: Marcie, I think we're starting to realize that I'm not the substitute you thought I was going to be.

Marcie: Why are you making this about Al?

Michael: Because it is. I mean, he was the one. He was the love of your life, Marcie. I'm never going to be able to measure up to that.

Marcie: I'm not asking you to measure up to that.

Michael: Maybe not in so many words, but -- look, look at us, Marcie. The cracks have been showing for a while. It's just you don't want to admit it, so every chance you get, you push me away.

Marcie: No. No, I haven't.

Michael: Yes --

Marcie: Michael --

Michael: Marcie. It's not good for me. It's not good for you. It's not good for either one of us, and somebody is going to have to put a stop to this.

Marcie: Michael, just -- let's just talk about things, ok? Let's just talk --

Michael: And it's going to have to be me. Goodbye, Marcie.

At the Love center, Mark and Riley are moving boxes for Viki.

Viki: Mark and Riley, thank you so much for helping me out here today. Everything's being stacked on that far wall, and I know this is heavy, but there's stuff inside that's kind of jingly. Be careful.

Riley: No problem, although I can't speak for wimpy boy here.

Mark: Hey, rock star, I got the heavy end.

Riley: In your dreams.

Viki: Ok, all right, thank you.

Marcie walks up carrying a box.

Riley: Oh, hey, Marcie.

Marcie: Hey.

Riley: You ok?

Marcie: Yeah. Yeah, I'll be fine.

Riley: Hey, what's wrong?

Marcie: I got fired. I just came from getting my things and, you know, I didn't feel like going home.

Riley: Well, hey, let me go call my dad. Maybe he can do something.

Marcie: No, no, it's ok. It's actually not the worst thing that happened.

Riley: Well, talk to me.

Marcie: I don't know if I want to talk about it.

Riley: Come on, Marcie.

Marcie: Well, Michael and I, um --

Riley: You and Michael what?

Marcie: We broke up.

At the diner, Jen and Michael are sitting at the counter.

Jen: You and Marcie broke up? Why?

Michael: I don't know. We had a fight. I'm not even sure how it started. But I said some things and she said some things, and then I said it was over.

Jen: Well, did you mean it?

Michael: I love Marcie. I want to spend the rest of my life with her. It's just --

Jen: It's just what? What are you going to do to get her back?

Riley points towards a bench and gestures for Marcie to sit down.

Riley: Right here.

Marcie: I don't even know where to start.

Riley: How about from the beginning?

Marcie: Ok, well, first of all, I woke up yesterday morning and my alarm clock never went off, so I was late for the bus, right? So then I wait for the next bus to come, only when the next bus came, I didn't have exact change.

Riley: Hey, Marcie, how about I take you to breakfast?

Marcie: I'm not hungry. Can you believe that? I'm not hungry. Usually when I get upset and nervous and stressed out, all I ever do is --

Riley: Hey, hey --

Marcie: I must be really messed up if I can't even eat.

Riley: Look, you have to eat because the last time you didn't eat, you ended up in the hospital.

Marcie: Now you just sound like Michael.

Riley: Well, that's because we both care about you.

Marcie: Thanks. But, you know, I just think I need to be alone for a while.

Riley: You sure?

Marcie: Yeah.

Riley: Ok.

Marcie: I just can't talk about it yet.

Riley: Ok.

Marcie: Thanks, Riley.

Marcie leaves.

At the diner, Jen and Michael continue their conversation.

Michael: I don't know what to do.

Jen: So that's it? You're just going to give up? I thought you loved Marcie.

Michael: I do.

Jen: Then fight for her.

Michael: How? We can't find five minutes to be alone.

Jen: Well, you're going to have to find the time. Be creative, or else both of you are going to be miserable.

Michael: You know, if it was just that, I'm pretty sure we could work it out.

Jen: What do you mean?

Michael: We're so different. I'm different.

Jen: That's what makes you two so good together.

Michael: As good as her and Al?

Jen: Is that what this is about?

Michael: Well, she says it's not.

Jen: Well, then she's telling the truth. You've really helped her get past al.

Michael: I don't know. Sometimes -- sometimes I think that Marcie doesn't even realize how much she still misses Al.

Jen: Well, I had a past with Al, too, and -- and, yeah, you two are different, but there is something about you that sometimes reminds me of him.

Michael: That's what it is with Marcie. See, I remind her of him, but I'm not him.

Jen: Ok, every couple has problems. Riley and I, we've got some stuff to work out, but we're trying, Michael. If you love somebody, you'll do whatever it takes. Or else you're never going to be happy, and neither will the person that you love.

Michael: Why is this so important to you?

Jen: Because Marcie’s my best friend, and you make her happy. You know, I was there when she lost Al, and I thought she would never smile again, but you made that happen. And you can't just mess things up because you don't think that you deserve somebody. You know, you can't just ruin everything because you don't think that you're good enough.

Michael: Who exactly are we talking about here? Me or you?

Jen: Ok, yeah, I've done some stupid things. But that doesn't mean that you have to. So why don't you just call her?

Michael: (looks at his cell phone) Out of juice.

Jen: Ok, well, you can use mine.

Michael: You know, I don't want to use up your minutes.

Jen: Ok, there's a pay phone. Let's go. Come on.

Michael: You are not going to let up on this, are you?

Michael and Jen walk to the pay phone in the alcove off the dining room.  He puts in the coins and dials the number.  The phone on the other end rings.

Marcie: Hello?

Michael: Hi, Marcie, it's -- it's me, Michael. Um -- where are you right now?

Marcie: Standing right behind you.

Michael and Jen turn around and see Marcie standing in the diner. Michael walks up to Marcie.

Michael: What are you doing here?

Marcie: Why were you calling me?

Michael: Could it be that you actually came to feed yourself?

Marcie: I still can't believe you're on my case about that, Michael. Didn't you break up with me?

Michael: Yeah, well, I still care, ok?

Marcie: Oh, really?

Michael: Really.

Jen: Uh, I'm going to leave now. Are you guys going to be ok?

Marcie: Yeah.

Michael: Yeah. I'll see you later.

Jen leaves the diner.

Marcie: So? Why were you calling me, Michael?

Michael: I, um -- I called to --

Marcie: What?

Michael: I called to say that I was sorry about the things I said to you when we were fighting.

Marcie: Me, too.

Michael: I love you, Marcie. I mean, that's really why I called, because I love you.

Marcie bits her lower lip.

Michael: I didn't sleep at all last night. I was thinking about our fight, you know? We both said stuff, you know, we were angry, and it never should've gotten to that point.

Marcie: Listen, Michael, if you're trying to say that you never should've broke up with me --

Michael: That's exactly what I'm trying to say! What?

Marcie: I love you. You know that, right?

Michael: So what's the problem?

Marcie: It's not just one problem, Michael. It's all of the problems.

Michael: Ok. You're still mad at me. I admit it, I slipped into old jerky Michael for a second there.

Marcie: No.

Michael: You want me to make it up to you, I will, I promise.

Marcie: No. No. That is not it.

Michael: Then what?

Marcie: Nothing's right between us anymore, Michael. I mean, we hardly have any time to be together, and when we do, we just wind up fighting.

Michael: We could get past that.

Marcie: Maybe we could. Maybe we could get past that, but there's something else, there's something that we can't, and it's my fault, ok? I never should've -- it was too soon for me to get involved with you. It was too soon after --

Michael: Al.

Marcie: You're right, ok, I haven't gotten over him, and it was my fault. It wasn't fair to you. Michael, you deserve better.

Michael: So what are you trying to say here, Marcie?

Marcie: I'm saying -- Michael, I'm saying that I agree with you. I agree with everything you said before. I -- I don't think we're meant to be.

Michael: I guess if you feel like we're not meant to be together, then there's nothing else to say.

Marcie: Well, I was kind of hoping that we could still be --

Michael: Be friends?

Marcie: Michael, I don't know if I can handle losing you completely from my life.

Michael: Like you did Al? Well, you got one thing right -- I'm not Al. I never will be.

Marcie: I'm so sorry.

Michael: Don't apologize. You don't need to apologize.

Marcie: But --

Michael: I'll be fine, Marcie.

Marcie: You sure?

Michael: I'm sure. I'll be ok. I always want what's best for you.

Marcie: I know.

As I watched this episode I could not get Gladys Knight & The Pips’ "Neither One of Us" out of my mind.  In my opinion, it is one of the best heartbreak/breakup songs ever recorded.  The last two lines always make me tear up, so I will let Gladys provide the coda to this episode:

It's sad to think we're not gonna make it
And it's gotten to the point
Where we just can't fake it
For some ungodly reason
Just won't let it die
I guess neither one of us
Wants to be the first to say good-bye

I keep wondering
What I'm gonna do without you
And I guess you must be wondering that same thing too
So we go on
Go on together
Living a lie
Because I guess neither one of us
Wants to be the first to say good-bye

Every time I find the nerve
Every time I find the nerve to say I'm leaving
Old memories
Those old memories get in my way
Lord knows it's only me
Lord knows it’s only me that I’m deceiving
When it comes to saying good-bye
That’s a simple word that I just cannot say

There can be no way
There can be no way
This can have a happy ending
No, no
So we just go on
Hurting and pretending

And convincing ourselves to give it just one more try
Because neither one of us
Wants to be the first to say it

Neither one of us
Wants to be the first to say it

Neither one of us
Wants to be the first to say

Farewell my love
Goodbye

Note: As painful as it was to watch Marcie & Michael breakup, this was a good episode.  It seems that the new head writer, Dena Higley, is actually letting Marcie & Michael face some of the issues that were glossed over in the Heaven Can Wait storyline and it’s “We just happened” resolution.  One thing I always hated about that storyline was that Marcie’s grief over losing Al was never truly addressed onscreen. Higley seems to be at least determined to give a nod to that grief and its aftermath.  She has also promised that we will learn more about Michael and watch Marcie & Michael come back together and fall in love onscreen.  I wait with baited breath. ~~Tessarae87 1/8/05
