Episode 4

The Color Green & Opening Night
March 16, 17 & 18, 2004

March 16, 2004 (Tuesday)

At the Student Union at Llanview U., Viki and Jessica are talking about Stephen Haver and the impact he had on both of them.  Jen, who is sitting with Riley, spots them.  Riley notices the expression on her face.

Riley: What -- what's the problem?

Jen: As if college isn't hard enough. Now I always have to see my mother-in-law? She's probably going to come over here and give me another lecture.

Riley: Just stick your head in your book and maybe she won't notice.

Marcie and Michael walk into the common area.  They are holding hands and laughing.  Marcie though spots Viki and immediately gets nervous.

Marcie: Oh, no, oh, oh -- oh, my gosh --

Michael: Marcie, what are you doing?

Marcie: It's President Davidson. She can't see me.

Michael: Why?

Marcie: Because --

Michael: I thought you two were chummy.

Marcie: Well, she's not going to like me very much when she sees this.  (pulls out a paper)

Riley glances over at Viki and then turns back to Jen.

Riley: Mrs. Davidson isn't even looking at you.

Jen: What if she saw me?

Riley: What is she going to do? You're passing all your classes.

Jen: Barely.

Riley: Better than before, like not at all.

Jen: Ok, you're right. You know what? I should be easier on myself. I should- - I should give myself a break. Let's go to The Palace for Bloody Marys.

Riley: (groans) I thought you were going to cool it with the drinking.

Jen: And are you just saying no to drugs?

Riley: I'm trying.

Jen: It's not easy, is it?

Riley: No. It's hell sometimes, but you're making it easier.

Jen: Me? Look, you're into some trouble if you think that you can lean on me, Riley.

Riley: Maybe we can lean on each other.

Jen: Unless we both crash at the same time.

Riley: Won't happen, not if we count on each other.

Jen: You really think you can count on me?

Riley: I'm willing to give it a shot if you are.

Jen: I guess it's worth a try.

Michael studies the paper Marcie handed him.

Michael: You see this isn't really as bad as you think it is.

Marcie: It's a D.

Michael: Yeah, but if you take a look, see, you made the same mistake here, here, and -- well, basically you made the same mistake through the whole thing. You change that, and you got an A.

Marcie: Why didn't I see that in the first place?

Michael: Well, probably because you got about a million other things on your mind.

Marcie: Before I had a life, my grades were my life.

Michael: Well, that's not good, either. Listen, there's got to be a way that we can find a happy medium for you.

Marcie: Well, I'm going to have to. Otherwise, I'm going to lose my scholarship. I can't really give up my job at the police station right now. Bo's counting on me way too much. And I don't want to give up my radio show. I really love doing that. Maybe I'm just going to have to give up the idea of writing this novel. I --

Michael: You're doing that? You're writing "The Killing Club"?

Marcie: No, I'm not anymore.

Michael: Listen, I'm sorry. You can't give that up.

Marcie: I can't flunk out of school.

Michael: All right, tell you what -- I'll help you pass this course.

Marcie: You don't have time to help me pass this course.

Michael: For you, my dear, I have all the time in the world. Besides, it'll give us another reason to have to get together.

Viki walks over to Marcie & Michael.

Viki: Excuse me.

Marcie: Hi.

Viki: Pardon me, Marcie.

Marcie: Hi, Mrs. Davidson.

Viki: Marcie, I need to address the student body today, so we're going to have to cut your radio show a little short.

Marcie: Oh, ok. Yeah.

Viki: I have some security measures that I want to talk to the students about. And I've also decided to set aside a section of the quad garden as a memorial for Dr. Haver's victims.

Marcie: That's beautiful.

Viki: Well, let's hope so. Now that he's in jail, hopefully the young ladies of this university are not in danger anymore and we can all move forward, ok?

At the diner, John is sitting in a booth.  Natalie walks over with a pot of coffee in hand.

Natalie: Hey. You look like you could use this.

John: Thanks.

Natalie: Did you sleep any?

John: Some.

Natalie: Same here.

John: How are you doing?

Natalie: Fine. Always am.

John: You've been through a hell of a lot.

Natalie: Yeah, well, so have you. I saw you last night at St. James church. I wasn't following you.

John: No?

Natalie: Ok, you're not the only one who worries about people.

John: Don’t. I'm always ok, too.

Natalie: Ok enough to have dinner with me tonight? How about it?

At the Student Union, Marcie and Michael are sitting next to each other on one of the couches and kissing.

Marcie: We're not going to get very far doing this.

Michael: At least not with the homework.

Marcie: You're a really big help.

Michael: Let me help some more.

Marcie giggles. Michael kisses her then his pager beeps.  He looks at the pager.

Michael: Ah. It's the hospital. I got to go. I'll see you later. We'll study more?

Marcie: I'm going to flunk out if we keep studying like this.

Michael: I want to see some pages of that novel, ok?

Marcie groans.

Michael: No, just do it.

Michael leaves.

Back at the diner, Natalie continues to try to persuade John to have dinner with her.

Natalie: If you don't want to have dinner, it's ok.

John: No, it's not that. I just -- -- I got some stuff I'm dealing with.

Natalie: Sure. I understand. Ahem.

John: You know what, though? I could probably use something stronger. What do you say a beer and a burger at Rodi’s?

Natalie: It's a date, then. Well, I mean, you know, a bite. So just meet me there after my shift.

John: I'll meet you there after your shift.

Officer: McBain.

John: Hey, what's up, fellas?

Officer: We got to take you in for questioning, John.

John: Questioning? What for?

Officer: Haver was assaulted in his cell. He says you did it.

John: Oh, that's crap.

Officer: We know. We know, but we got orders.

Second officer: Commish says it's got to be by the book.

Natalie: Ok, well, Uncle Bo knows this is a crock, ok? He's going to take care of this.

John: It's cool. Just doing their job. Ok, let's get this over with.

Natalie: John, call me. Just let me know everything's ok?

John: Yeah.

Natalie: Thanks.

At the hospital, Dorian runs into Viki in the waiting room.

Dorian: Why, Viki, good morning. Viki, are you all right?

Doan: Why don't you sit down here?

Viki: Oh. No, I think I'm ok now, thank you.

Dorian: Tell me what happened.

Viki: I -- I don't actually know. I was visiting Ben in his room, and I left the room, and -- I felt really, really dizzy all of a sudden, that's all.

Dorian: Maybe we'd better get you to an exam room --

Viki: Oh, no, good heavens --

Dorian: And have you checked out.

Viki: No, Dorian, I don't need that.

Michael comes into view.

Dorian: Oh, excuse me, doctor. Mrs. Davidson here could use your attention.

Viki: Dorian, I'm fine. I don't need a doctor.

Dorian: She's suffering from shortness of breath, dizziness.

Michael: Any pain, discomfort?

Viki: No.

Michael: Numbness?

Viki: No.

Michael: Nausea.

Viki: No, no!

Dorian: Don't minimize this. It could be serious.

Viki: Dorian, I'm fine.

Dorian: Would you check her vitals, please?

Viki: Oh, please --

Michael: Yeah, yeah, not a problem. Here, let me see this.

Viki: Do I have a pulse? Am I alive?

Michael: Well, your heart rate is slightly elevated.

Dorian: See?

Viki: Well, that doesn't necessarily mean anything, you know?

Michael: Do you have a history of heart disease in your family?

Viki: Heart disease? Yes, my father.

Michael: Well, my suggestion would be to see your regular physician as soon as possible.

Viki: Ok.

Michael: Get a full workup. But you know what?

Viki: Ok.

Michael: I'm actually headed over to the E.R. Would you like to come with me?

Viki: No, no, no. I'm fine.

Dorian: Viki, please, would you listen to the doctor and --

Viki: Dorian, please, I'm fine now. Really, I am.

Michael: Ok.

Dorian: Thank you.

Michael: Well, if there's anything else, you'll let me know?

Viki: I -- I -- yeah. Thank you.

Dorian: Thank you. Thank you very much, doctor.

Viki: I'm fine now. Honestly, I'm fine. But I really appreciate your concern, ok?

Dorian: I don't know. I think maybe --

Viki: So, Dorian, what are you doing here?

Dorian: I have just accepted a very prestigious position here at the hospital.

Viki: The Community Relations job?

Dorian: As Director, yes.

Viki: Oh, well, congratulations.

Dorian: Thank you.

Viki: And, look, if I didn't say it earlier, congratulations on your wedding.

Dorian: Well, that didn't quite come off.

Viki: Why? Did David call it off?

Dorian: If anybody calls off a wedding, it is I.

Viki: Yeah, of course, but why?

Dorian: Well, I'm going to have so much on my plate. I'm going to be taking on this new job here at the hospital. And then, of course, I have my daughter Adriana with me. And -- well, you of all people can understand that that can be very challenging.

Viki: Oh, absolutely. Of course, there's a big difference between us. Natalie really is my daughter.

At the Student Union, Jessica flops down next to Marcie who is still sitting on the couch where Michael left her.

Jessica: Working on the Poli. Sci. paper?

Marcie rolls her eyes.

Jessica: Yeah, I know. I was having trouble with mine, too.

Marcie: I should be working on it, but Michael got me into writing this novel. And, well, at least I'm trying to write it.

Jessica: (looks at Marcie’s notepad)  "The Killing Club"?

Marcie: Yes, a mystery novel.

Jessica: Hmm. It must be hard trying to get your -- your head in that place after all that's been happening.

Marcie: Well, maybe. Maybe that's it.

Jessica: Anyways -- you know, I was supposed to meet Antonio here, but --

Marcie: I haven't seen him.

Jessica: Ok. I'd better go look for him.

Marcie: I got to get back to my books, anyway. See you later.

Jessica: Bye.

Jessica walks away.  Marcie glances over and spots Jen.  She is talking on her cell phone. Marcie begins to write a scene in her head:  She was beautiful, blond, and slender, perfect in every way. The most popular girl in school -- to everyone but herself.

In the meanwhile, Jen continues to talk on the phone.

Jen: Jen: Ok. Yeah. Bye. (hangs up the phone and turns to Riley) Sheyne is totally into the band getting back together. He wants you to meet him in Angel Square, and you guys can practice at the garage.

Riley: What about J.K.?

Jen: He hasn't heard from him.

Riley: Well, that only leaves half the band.

Jen: Ok. Well, you go meet with Sheyne, and I'll find J.K.

Riley: Why are you doing this?

Jen: Well, it was your idea to be a support system. And it beats studying, right?

March 17, 2004 (Wednesday)

(Special Episode)

Setup: It is St. Patrick’s Day and Rodi’s is decorated to the tenth degree.  The radio is playing and River is doing his shtick as Spirit of the Night.

River: This is the “Spirit of the Night”, keeping you company on this St. Patrick's evening. The Irish say there's luck in the air. Well, here's hoping you breathe some in tonight.

Viki walks into Rodi’s and spots Natalie.

Viki: Hey.

Natalie: Hey! Well, Happy St. Patty's Day.

Viki: Thank you, darling, and, you, too.

Natalie: Thank you.

Viki: For you.

Natalie: Ooh, look at this.

Viki: Open it and find out.

Natalie: A shamrock.

Viki: Yeah.

Natalie: It's for good luck, right?

Viki: That's what the Irish say, yeah.

Natalie: Beautiful. Thank you.

Viki: You're welcome. Are you closing up tonight?

Natalie: Actually, John's supposed to meet me up here after my shift is over, and we're going to have dinner.

Viki: Is that, like, a date?

Natalie: No!

Viki: Oh.

Natalie: Well -- I don't know. Maybe.

In Bo's office, John and Bo talk.

John: Just hit me, Bo. It's time to move on. I can't do this anymore.

Bo: Well, it sounds to me like you ran up against some people at the F.B.I. that are more interested in their own egos than they are doing a good job.

John: I did it by the book.

Bo: Look, hey, I can vouch for that.

John: I wanted this conviction, and not just for Caitlin, but for Gabrielle. For all of them.

Bo: Well, the bureau's lost one hell of a good man.

John: Thanks for saying so.

Bo: So what are you going to do now?

Marcie is sitting at her desk in the common area of the police station.  The phone rings but she doesn’t seem to hear it. She is writing in a notebook.

Officer: Hey, you still work here, Marcie?

Marcie: Oh, yeah. Sorry, sorry. (picks up the phone) Llanview Police Department. How may I direct your call? Sure, sure, hold on.

Marcie: No, I'm sorry -- I'm –

Michael walks up to the desk and grabs the folder.  Marcie is startled then exhales.

Marcie: Oh. Michael, I'm so glad it was you.

Michael: Is this the novel?

Marcie: Yeah, well, they're just some character sketches.

Michael: Do we know who the killer is yet?

Marcie: Not until you read it. You'll know when you read it.

Michael: I'll read it now.

Marcie: No, no, not until it's finished. Besides, I promised your mother that we would help her move in with Natalie and Roxy. Remember? I just hope we're not making a mistake.

At Foxy Roxy’s, Eve and Roxy are talking.

Roxy: Ooh, two months rent upfront. I knew you'd make a good roommate, Eve.

Eve: Well, we'll see. I've lived alone for a long time.

Roxy: Well, there's plenty of time to be alone when you get in your coffin. Tonight, I think we should raise the roof. I think we should live it up. St. Patrick's Day 2004 at Rodi’s. What do you say?

Eve: I can't tonight. I've got a set later at Capricorn.

Roxy: You do? And how come I wasn't invited?

Eve: You're invited now.

Roxy: All right, I'm coming.

Eve: Good.

Adriana: Hey. Too late to get a manicure?

Roxy: Hey, honey, for you, anything.

Adriana: Hey.

Roxy: Oh! This is Eve McBain. This is Adriana -- well, I don't even know what last name you're going under.

Adriana: Oh, hi.

Roxy: Anyway, this is River's girlfriend.

Eve: Oh, right. I met River. He's adorable.

Adriana: Yeah, he is, isn't he?

Eve: Yeah.

Roxy: Yeah.

Eve: Ladies, I have to go meet my niece Shannon. I shall be back shortly.

Roxy: Ok.

Eve: Ok.

Roxy: I'll see you later.

Eve: Nice to meet you.

Roxy: All right, honey, we're going to pick a color, any color you like, and I'm going to go set up.

Adriana: Ok.

River: And not long ago, someone I loved came back into my life. She was brought back from far away for the wrong reasons, for a pot of gold that had nothing to do with a rainbow. But she's here, and I hope she's feeling half as lucky as I do tonight.

At the Police Department, Lindsay walks into the commons area and spots Daniel Colson.

Lindsay: Hi.

Daniel: Hey. Wow. Lindsay, you really do great things to that color.

Lindsay: Oh, thank you.

Daniel: Listen, I called your home, but you had already left.

Lindsay: Yeah, I think I have my cell phone turned off.

Daniel: I have to go upstairs for a Corrections Department hearing.

Lindsay: Now?

Daniel: Now. Look, I could catch up with you later. Look, honey, I'm really sorry.

Lindsay: That's ok.

Daniel: All right, see you.

Lindsay: Ok.

Daniel: Bye.

At Ultra Violet, Riley and Sheyne approach Rex who is working behind the bar.

Riley: Hey.

Rex: What do you want? I'm busy.

Riley: I was thinking of getting Midnight Logic back and playing again.

Rex: Without Flash? I don't think so.

Riley: She will be back, and I want the band ready and waiting for her when she is.

Sheyne: We were hoping to do some acoustic sets in here, looking for some new people to jam with.

Rex: Well, it might pass the time on quiet nights. Ok.

Jen walks in with J.K.

Jen: Look who I found.

Riley: Ho! Ha-ha! How's it going?

Sheyne: Where have you been?

Jen: I called his parents. They gave me his number in Philly.

J.K.: Jen says you're going to start playing here again, huh?

Riley: Well -- maybe.

Rex: Ok. If there's something in it for me.

River: St. Pat was a guy who did his own thing. He made the king mad just by lighting a fire when the king hadn't got his own going yet. But when the king's men went to put Pat's fire out, it wouldn't die. I like that story. It reminds me of someone I love. A bunch of people have tried to keep us apart, but it was like St. Patrick's fire and it kept burning. It lit the way for my soul mate to get back to me.

Shannon: "Soul mate"? I bet that D.J. doesn’t even have a girlfriend.

Adriana: I think he's romantic.

Shannon: He needs a cold shower.

Eve: Hey, girls. You've met my niece Shannon.

Roxy: Oh.

Eve: She just started at Llanview U.

Roxy: Oh, so that's the bod connected to the voice.

Shannon: Some people say that I'm an acquired taste.

Roxy: They say that about me, too, cookie.

Adriana: Hi. I'm Adriana.

Roxy: Oh, oh, so if you're a relative, then you get the 10% professional discount at foxy Roxy's. And here at the hair haven, we have style.

Shannon: Well, it is definitely a fashion risk, but I respect you for taking it.

Roxy: Hey, you're all right, kiddo. You know, Llanview going to be a lot more fun with the McBain’s around.

Shannon: Ugh.

At the police station, Michael is fingering Marcie’s manuscript.

Marcie: No, no, don't touch it!

Michael: I'm only going to read a couple of pages.

Marcie: No!

Michael: Wait, come on, it's not like you're ready to leave yet.

Marcie: Haven't you ever heard what happens if a writer lets someone read their work before it's finished?

Michael: No.

Marcie: Well, neither have I, but it doesn't matter because I know it's not going to be good.

Michael: Yeah, well, I think that someone would say that the writer was great and she would go on to write a bestseller.

Marcie: What if someone thinks that she's not great?

Michael: Well, that someone would be a total idiot-- is that why you're not letting me read this?

Marcie: You don't know that I'm going to be good.

Michael: Yes, I do. You know what? I'll wait to read it until you're ready.

Marcie: Thanks. Hmm -- no, I'm not ready for that. You know what? Since I'm not going to be ready for a while, why don't you go talk to your brother John? You know, you could help him catch up. Tell him that your mom's coming to move into town. Come on. Listen, he's had a really rough day. He could use some cheering up.

In Bo’s office, John and Bo are talking about John’s plans now that the Music Box Killer has been caught.

John: First thing I need to do is talk to my mom. It's about everything that happened. She was thinking about moving here, and I don't want her to make any changes because of me.

Bo: So where are you going to go?

John: Someplace that doesn't remind me of Haver.

Bo: You think that place even exists? No, John, Haver was willing to blow himself up just to prove that he could beat you. Now, he's not going to give up on that until they put the needle in his arm.

John: So keep him around, study him. Maybe you can find some way to stop the Havers out there before they even get started. Hey, look, I'll always be in debt to you for saving my mom, and I just -- I wanted to say it was a honor, Commissioner.

Bo: The honor was all mine. Uh -- John, you know what? If you got a minute, I'd just like to pick your brain about something.

John: Sure.

Bo: I'm looking for a new Chief of Detectives here at the department, and I wondered if you had any thoughts about what I should look for in a candidate?

John: Hey, look no further than Antonio.

Bo: Well, yeah, but see, he was just reinstated, so that'd be a hard sell.

John: Then maybe just find someone that still thinks the world's worth fighting for.

Bo: Yeah.

John: They probably want someone that worked homicide, who knows forensics, good instincts.

Bo: You know what? I think I know just the person. Want the job?

Kevin walks into the commons area of the police station and spots Marcie.

Kevin: Hey, Marcie, is Bo in?

Marcie: He's in the office with Agent McBain.

Kevin: All right, I'll wait.

Marcie: Ok.

At Rodi’s, Natalie and Viki talk about how Haver tricked her as part of his revenge plan.

Natalie: So I got the phone call that Cristian was alive and fell for it.

Viki: Oh, honey, of course you would believe that.

Natalie: Then I found out it was a lie. You know, and then I just felt like it was somebody knocking on my head, saying, "hey, don't you get it? Cristian's dead. He's not coming back, ever." I thought I was going to die. So I kept thinking, what would I do? I mean, what would I do if I had a second chance?

Viki: Do you think that John could be a part of a second chance?

Natalie: Since the other night, I feel different. You know, like a door has opened. And now that John’s caught Caitlin’s killer and the case is closed -- I don't know.

Viki: I hope you have a good time tonight.

Natalie: Of course, he's a half-hour late, but that's ok.

Viki: Oh, honey, I'll wait with you.

Natalie: No. No, no, no. He'll be here. Plus that I have good luck now.

Viki: Well, ok. All right, have fun, and I'll talk to you tomorrow.

Natalie: Thank you.

Viki: I love you.

Natalie: I love you, too.

Viki: Bye, babe.

Natalie: Bye.

John walks out of Bo’s office.

Michael: Hey, John.

John: Hey.

Michael: Listen, I just wanted to let you know mom's moving to Llanview.

John: She is? It's a done deal?

Michael: Yeah, yeah. We're on our way over there, Marcie and I, to help her move some stuff in. Do you want to come? You look like you could use a break

Meanwhile back at Ultra Violet, Jen is negotiating with Rex.

Jen: Either you want Midnight Logic to play or you don't, you're not getting anything from me.

Rex: Not even to help music boy? Boy, you didn't waste any time moving in on him.

Jen: Yeah, Riley’s hot. He knows how to please a woman. Do you want me to tell you all about it? You can tell me all about you and my mother.

Rex: I told you, that -- that -- that –

Riley walks up to them.

Riley: Hey.

Rex: That's over.

Jen: It happened.

Riley: Everything ok?

Jen: I'm fine. I really need a drink.

Riley: No, hey, I got a better idea. Why don't you come over and listen to the song J.K.'s been working on. All right? Come on.

Riley: Come on; let's get out of here.

Daniel walks into Bo’s office.

Daniel: Hey, listen, sorry if I haven't said anything, but that was great work bringing Haver in.

Bo: Well, I think McBain deserves most of the credit for that.

Daniel: Yeah, but he couldn't have done it without you, though.

Bo: You ok, Colson?

Daniel: Yeah, yeah. Why?

Bo: I don't know. You just -- you seem to me a little -- I don't know -- laid back today.

Daniel: Yeah, you know, I guess I'm glad I wrapped up work early enough to salvage my date.

Bo: Good.

Daniel: Yeah.

Bo: Have fun.

Daniel: I will, thanks. Listen, about Agent McBain’s mother -- is she ok? She had a close call the other night.

Michael, Marcie, Eve Shannon and John are standing in Foxy Roxy's Hair Haven.

Eve: Thank you all again.

Marcie: Yeah, any time.

Michael: Yeah, no problem. You know, Marcie and I are looking for a St. Patty's Day party if anybody else is interested -- John.

Shannon: I think I'm going to hang out here for a while.

Eve: Ok.

John: I'm just going to talk to mom about something, so --

Eve: Bye, guys.

Marcie: Bye.

Eve: Have fun.

Marcie: Thanks.

Michael: Bye. Yes.

Eve: Hiya.

John: Hiya.

Eve: I'm all yours.

John: I probably should have said something before you unpacked all those boxes, but I don't think I'm staying in Llanview.

Eve: Ok.

John: Does that mean it's ok?

Eve: Do you think I moved to Llanview just for you?

John: And Michael and Shannon.

Eve: And I love you all dearly, but I did this for me.

John: Well, that's great, mom. I'm happy --

Eve: You and Michael pushed me, and I wanted to be closer to him and to you. But it was actually your father that convinced me.

John: I'm not sure what that means, mom.

Eve: Don't worry, honey. I'm not losing my mind.

John: Oh.

Eve: Yet.

John: Good.

Eve: But -- I did see him when I thought I was going to die.

John: And?

Eve: I was so happy. I was so happy to see him. I just wanted to go to him, and he just said no. He told me that I needed to stop waiting for him and to move on and start a new life. So, if you go, I'll miss you, but I know you need to live your own life. Sorry.

John: Hey, I hope you like your new place.

Eve: Thank you, baby. I love you.

John: I love you, too. I'm going to go, all right?

Eve: Ok.

Roxy: Was that Johnny?

Eve: Oh, gosh, you just missed him.

Roxy: Oh, shucks, I missed him. Well, you live with me, and he's going to be coming around the house, casually running into Nattie.

Eve: Well, don't bet the rent money on it.

River: To all of you out there living like tonight could be your last, you never know. Better go for it.

At Ultra Violet, Rex continues to come on to Lindsay.

Rex: Ah, dance with me.

Lindsay: No. I didn't come here to dance.

Rex: Yeah, but you're here, so why not?

Lindsay: Because I came here to talk business. The restaurant, remember?

Rex: Oh, that's really why you came?

Lindsay: You don't have a business proposal for me, do you?

Rex: Yeah, we can talk about that later.

Lindsay: Well, you tell me when later is.

Daniel, Riley and Jen walk into Ultra Violet and spot Lindsay and Rex.  They freeze in place and watch them.

Rex: You don't really want to go, do you?

Lindsay: Make me want to stay.

Daniel: You know I was hoping they weren't here, but I kind of figured they were.

Jen: Well, I guess you'd know better than I would.

Daniel: Let's get the hell out of here. What do you say I buy you two guys dinner?

At Rodi's, Roxy is standing at the bar dressed in honor of the day and with a trophy in hand.

Roxy: Where's Natalie? Yo, Natalie, what do you think? Well, what do you think?

River: So I hope you're all as lucky as I am tonight. My soul mate's with me again. This is for you, wherever you are right now.

At Foxy Roxy’s, Shannon and Adrianna continue to spar.

Shannon: You probably think he's talking about you, don't you?

Adriana: I know he is. See you later.

Back at Ultra Violet, Lindsay and Rex continue to rubbing against each other.

Lindsay: Why don't we go somewhere?

Rex: Why don't we stay here?

Lindsay: Here? You want to stay here?

Rex: Yes, well, lucky for us I own the place.

At Rodi’s, Daniel, Riley and Jen are sitting at a table.  Roxy spots them and rushes over.

Riley: Burgers are on the way.

Roxy: Say hello to best costume of St. Paddy's Day 2004. I won 50 bucks.

Daniel: Well, you know, no one is more deserving than you.

Roxy: I like the way you think, Danny Boy, so how about if I buy you a beer with my prize money?

Daniel: You know, as tempting as that sounds, I think I'm going to have to pass.

Roxy: Not even on St. Patrick's Day?

Daniel: Not even on St. Patrick's Day.

Roxy: Shucks. Later.

Daniel: Bye.

Outside of Rodi’s, Marcie and Michael are talking.

Michael: Hey, listen, I got some time off coming up. You got spring break coming up. I was thinking maybe we could go somewhere and do something.

Marcie: Oh, no, I can’t. I have to study.

Michael: Nobody studies over spring break.

Marcie: Come on, I told you that I have to lock myself in my room and I have to snuggle up next to my books.

Michael: (pulls Marcie into his arms) Hmm. You, alone, a deserted college campus --

Marcie: Hmm.

Michael: Sounds like it could be good.

They kiss.

Marcie: Hey, what time do we have to be at Capricorn?

Michael: Oh, relax. We got plenty of time. My mom doesn't go on for a while. Although, I can't remember if I told John what time to be there.

Marcie: Oh, I'm sure your mom told him about it. I wouldn't worry.

Michael: Yeah. Yeah, I hope so. I mean he's got to be there.

Meanwhile inside of Rodi's, Natalie corners John.

Natalie: Hmm. No wonder you forgot.

John: I'm sorry. I -- I lost track of time. I hope you're not mad.

Natalie: So, does this mean that you've made a decision about Uncle Bo's offer?

John: Yeah, I don't think so, Natalie.

Natalie: You should take it.

John: Yeah? Why is that?

Natalie: Oh, I don't know. I mean, wouldn't it be great to see your mom terrorize Roxy?

John: Yeah.

River: For me, St. Patrick's Day isn't about snakes or shamrocks. It's about a guy who was willing to die for what he believed in. That kind of passion is what makes us alive. If you've got it, don't ever let it go. This is the “Spirit of the Night”, people, signing off. Peace.

Adriana: Great show, Spirit.

River: Hey. You heard all that?

Adriana: Almost. You're a hit. Well, except with one girl I met, but she doesn't count.

River: Really? Why not?

Adriana: Because she hates anything romantic.

River: Oh.

Adriana: You know I almost gave away who the spirit was. Does anybody else know?

River: Just one person.

At the police station, Kevin is in Bo’s office.

Kevin: I'm going to go to Texas and bring home Kelly myself.

Bo: Did she give you an address?

Kevin: Just a name. I don't know the people.

Bo: It's a big state, Kevin.

Kevin: Yeah, well, my friends are well connected in Houston, so --

Bo: Yeah, that's right. Good luck.

Kevin: Hey, thanks for everything.

Bo: Any time.

There is a knock on the door.

Bo: Yeah?

Eve sticks her head in.

Bo: Hey.

Eve: Hi. Am I interrupting?

Bo: No, no. I was just finishing up.

Eve: Great. I -- I realized I never properly thanked you for saving my life. Thank you, Commissioner.

Bo: Well, you're welcome. You know, it was a lot of luck involved with that.

Eve: Oh, right. All in a day's work, right?

Bo: Yeah, something like that.

Eve: Listen, I am starting my new job singing at Capricorn. I'm nervous.

Bo: Why? No, you're going to be great.

Eve: Oh, come on. Listen, I just -- I brought you a couple of tickets if you'd like to come and bring a date.

Bo: Thank you, I'd love to come, but -- I'm only going to need the one ticket.

John and Natalie continue dancing around each other.

Natalie: Sorry, your burger kind of got cold.

John: That's ok. I'm used to it by now.

Natalie: Well, I guess I will be going.

John: Yeah?

Natalie: See you.

John: Ok, good night.

March 18, 2004 (Thursday)

Michael and Marcie walk into Capricorn.

Michael: Mom.

Eve: Oh, hey, baby. Hi, Marcie.

Marcie: Hi.

Michael: Are you ready for your opening night in Llanview?

Eve: To tell you the truth, I'm nervous. This is the first time I have sung outside of the Jupiter Club in what, 14 years?

Marcie: Wow. 14 years? I think I'd be a little nervous.

Michael: Yeah, well, you have no reason to be nervous, because you're going to be great. Hey, you know, Marcie’s a really great singer, too.

Eve: I've heard that.

Marcie: No, no, I just sing in the shower and sometimes in the car, but to sing in front of all these people, I get really nervous.

Michael: Marcie, my mom's not going to be nervous, because she's been doing this her whole life.

Eve: When's John coming?

Michael: Whenever you told him to come.

Eve: I didn't say anything. You didn't invite him?

Michael: No. I thought you invited him.

Marcie: Well, I'll give him a call right now.

Eve: No, no, and you know what? I am going to go to his hotel and invite him in person.

Michael: What are you talking about? Don't you have to get ready for your show?

Eve: I have so much time, and if I stay here one more moment I am going to dissolve into a puddle of nerves. See ya.

Marcie: Bye.

In John’s room at The Angel Square Hotel, John and Natalie are talking.

Natalie: I've never been more embarrassed in my life.

John: Hey, we're good enough friends that we can talk about this, right? Will you look at me? Please?

John: You know I care about you. I need you to know that, right?

Natalie: It's part of the job, right?

John: No, it's not part of the job. You're bright and you're tough and you're pretty easy on the eyes, and who wouldn't like you? It's just --

Natalie: You're not looking for anything right now.

John: Yeah, that's right. This thing with Haver -- it brought up a lot of this old stuff about losing Caitlin.

Natalie: Right, and you're not ready to move on. I understand.

John: I know you do. I know you do, and that's -- ah, hell, now, this is one of those things that I don't even know where I'm going to be next week after leaving the bureau. I don't know.

Natalie: So, then, I guess you did make a decision.

John: I was packing when you got in. See, anyone who's going to be with me, they're just asking for trouble, and I like you too much for that. We ok?

Natalie: Yeah. Can we forget this ever happened?  Well, talk about misreading signals.

John: No, you didn't misread any signals, Natalie. You know, ever since we first met, playing pool, hanging out, just talking, I always felt like we got each other.

Natalie: You're right. We did. Even Cristian -- he was jealous way back when. I told him he was nuts, but --

John: No, he wasn't nuts. It was something. But, I mean, you two were solid, and I was -- I was buried in my work, you know, trying to forget about Caitlin.

Natalie: You were pretty intense. Still are.

John: You think?

Natalie: A little bit.

John: I'm kind of funny sometimes.

There is a knock on the door.

John: Excuse me.

John opens the door and Eve is standing there.

Eve: Oh, hi, ba— (spots Natalie) oh, I'm sorry. Am I interrupting?

John: You're not interrupting. Please come in.

Eve: Ok. I am making my debut at club Capricorn in about an hour, and I would love for you to be there to protect me from hecklers.

John: Well, I should bring my gun.

Eve: Oh, yes.

John: I would love to be there.

Eve: Oh, good.

John: It'll be great. (turns to Natalie) You want to come?

Eve: Come on.

Natalie: I'd love to.

Eve: Great.

John: We'll see you down there.

Eve: Bye.

Eve leaves and John and Natalie continue their discussion.

Natalie: I know that you've been going through a lot, and I know you're pretty angry with what's going on at work.

John: No, it's no big deal.

Natalie: Well, it is a big deal. We're friends, right?

John: Sure.

Natalie: I just -- I don't think that you should be making this decision that could affect your entire future without talking to someone.

John: What's your point?

Natalie: Maybe that someone should be me.

John: What do you say we talk about this on the ride over? Come on. Let's get out of here.

At Capricorn, Marcie, Michael, and Shannon are sitting in a booth. John and Natalie are standing behind them.

Natalie: So I think you guys should, you know, talk to John before he does something impulsive here, and then you can tell him what you think.

Michael: Well, I'd understand if you took off, man. I mean, Llanview P.D.'S all right, but it's a huge step down from the F.B.I.

Marcie: Yeah, but what if it's not about his career? You know, he finally has all his family all together in the same place. I'd kill to have that situation.

Shannon: I say just dump both jobs. I mean, who wants a gig where people are shooting at you?

John: Well, I'll keep that in mind, Shannon. Thank you.

Bo: I think this young lady makes an excellent point, but I'd like to tell all of you what I told John. I think he'd make an incredible addition to the L.P.D., And I hope to god that he decides to take this job.

John: Are these seats taken? Move down. Come on, what are you doing here?

R.J.: Ladies and gentlemen, may I have your attention, please?

Bo: Excuse me.

R.J.: Tonight, we are privileged to have a special vocalist with us. Making her very first appearance here in Llanview, straight from Atlantic City, help me welcome Eve McBain.

Everyone applauds.

Eve: (sings) Afraid to love but then your arms went around me afraid to love again so lucky you found me instantly, I knew a fantasy come true...

Eve: (sings) No need to be afraid to love your smile, your touch, your kiss so warm and so tender what is there for me to resist? Can't even remember all my fears have stopped disappeared like raindrops on a summer night of love

Everyone applauds.

Marcie, Michael, John and so on walk up to her..

John: So good.

Michael: Boy, you could make a living at this, lady.

Eve: I'm just glad they didn't run me out of town.

Marcie: Oh, no, no way. You were terrific.

Eve: Thanks. Hey, Shannon, you came!

Shannon: You were great.

Eve: I know this isn't your music. Thanks, honey.

Bo: I thought you were great.

John: Yeah, yeah. When's your next show?

Eve: Oh, gosh. Not till midnight. You're going to be long gone by then.

John: I don't know about that.

Michael: What? I thought you were taking off.

John: If it's all right with the rest of you, I think I changed my mind. I'm going to stick around, and if the Commissioner hasn't given away that Chief of Detectives job, I'm in. Yeah?

Bo: You're in.

John: You know what? I'm buying at the bar.

Michael: Yeah, bottoms up on you.

John: Oh, no, you're going to have to help me.
