MARCAL SCENES ACT II Page 41
Episode 27 The Last of Tico Tuesday, November 30, 2004 At the hospital, Cristian is rushed in on a stretcher. Michael: Ok, people, what do we got here? Paramedic: Head trauma, positive l.O.C., G.C.S. 12. Abdominal bleeding. Paige: Commissioner Buchanan already called it in. We got a gunshot victim on his way next. Michael: Put anesthesia on notice and get me the neurologist on call, stat! Paige: Let's go, ladies! Michael: Distended, possible internal bleeding. Paige: I want a c-spine. Get me an abdominal and chest film. What -- how did this happen? Natalie: I mean, I thought -- I thought he was shot at first, but he was -- he was just diving for cover. He must've hit his head. But he -- he had a stab wound before. He's still bleeding. Paige: You know what? You get the information. I'll take care of this. Michael: Ok. Cristian is wheeled into a room. Natalie: Doc, is he going to be ok? Paige: We're going to do everything we can for him. Let's start another line. Michael: I need to ask you some questions, then you can go be with him. Natalie: What? Michael: His name? Natalie: Cristian Vega. Michael: I thought that he was -- Natalie: Yeah, I know. Everybody thought so, but he's not. He's back, he's alive, and, listen, doc, I got to be with him. I can't let anybody keep me away from him. Ok? Natalie rushes into the room. Evangeline: Michael? Did you see Cristian Vega brought in? Michael: Then you know? Evangeline: Yeah. How is he? I wanted to be able to tell john. Michael: I saw his E.M.T. Report. He should be fine. It's weird -- somebody coming back from the dead. Evangeline: Yeah. Changes everything. Michael raises his eyebrow and looks at her. Evangeline: John thought Cristian Vega died because of him. But now that Cristian is alive -- Michael: He can stop beating himself up over it. Evangeline: And finally let go. In the examination room, Paige talks to Cris. Paige: Your x-rays show fractured ribs on the right. Your cat scan is negative, but you do have a concussion from your fall, Mr. Vega. Cristian: I feel fine. Paige: Yeah, well, don't get any bright ideas to go home tonight. You're ours for at least the night. Mrs. Vega, I do have some tests that I need to run. Could I get you to step out for just a moment? Natalie: Sure. Honey, I’ll be right back, all right? I love you. Cristian: I love you, too. Natalie steps out into the hallway and sees Evangeline. Natalie: Hey. What are you doing here? Evangeline: Just checking up on Cristian for John. Natalie: He's -- he's going to be ok. I got to call my mom. Excuse me. Michael walks up to Evangeline. Michael: How's Cristian Vega doing? Evangeline: Natalie says he's going to be fine. John is going to be so happy about that. Michael: He's not the only one. Evangeline: What? Michael: John's free and clear for you now. Evangeline: This isn't about me, Michael. Michael: Yeah, but you got to admit the thought crossed your mind. Johnny is all yours now. Friday, December 1,2004 At the hospital, Marcie is sitting next to Jessica’s bed. Marcie: How are you? I mean, are you ok? I can't even believe that Tico Santi tried to force Antonio to kill Governor Brooks and then Tico got shot. I mean, obviously, you're ok because you're alive, but he stabbed you, and then Antonio -- is he in jail? Was he arrested? And Tico stabbed you. Jessica: Marcie, I really don't want to talk about it. Marcie: Oh, right. I'm sorry. But, you know, I’m here if you want to talk. Jessica: How are you and Michael? Marcie: Michael. Jessica: Your boyfriend? Marcie, what's wrong? Marcie: I don't really know what to do about Michael. Jessica: Marcie, what's wrong? I thought that you and Michael were the perfect couple. Marcie: We are. At least I think we are, except we never have time for each other anymore. You know, "The Killing Club" is coming out soon -- well, next year, but Professor Balone and I already have so much to do for the publicity. Jessica: What does Professor Dalone have to do with this? Marcie: Oh. Well, when I was really stuck, Mark Solomon sent the first draft over to Professor Calone. He really liked it. I was just going to throw the whole thing away, but we wound up rewriting it together, and now they're sending us out on a book tour -- well, Hayes is. Hayes Barber. He's my agent. I know, it's a pretentious name, isn't it? He's really a go-getter and very driven, and he believes in me, I think, more than I do. I love it. Oh, Jessica, I love it all. You know what I mean? For the first time in my life, I feel like I'm worth something. But I don't know, it's just been taking away time from Michael. And I just don't know how to tell him that I still love him, make him understand. I just don't know to make him understand that. I have to do this for myself, you know, right now. Jessica: Marcie, I'm sure that he understands. Marcie: Oh, I know. Of course he understands. You know, he's the best guy ever. Well, he was one of two. I really miss al. You know, last night with the shooting and you getting stabbed, it just -- it made me think of al, you know, because he loved you so much. Always made me a little jealous, no, that's ok. But it reminded me that, you know, what matters is being with someone that you love. You know, writing a novel, all this -- I mean, it just didn't really matter. And I love Michael. Jessica: And he loves you, too. Marcie: I know. You know, he's been sending me flowers all the time. And he keeps trying to make time for us to get together. And he's been trying to tell me something for weeks, but I have no idea what he's talking about. I've been so distracted, and he just keeps babbling on and he starts sweating and – (eyes widen) oh, my god. I think he's been trying to ask me to marry him. Jessica: Well, do you want to get married? Marcie: Yes. I mean, I think -- yes. Jessica: Ok. Marcie: I mean, more than books, you know, more than fame and money. You know, you're right. I have got to go find him right now and I have got to tell him that -- I've got to tell -- I have to find him, right? Right, yes, and let him propose, and I can say yes. Yes. Yes.
At the hospital, Sonia and Michael are standing outside of Tico’s room. Sonia is staring at Tico through the glass window. Sonia: He was so sweet and so gentle. It's so hard to believe that he turned out like this. Michael: Why don't I give you a couple of minutes alone? Sonia: Yeah. Sonia goes into the room and John walks up to Michael. Michael: Hey, John. John: Hi. Michael: Have you got a minute? John: Yeah, sure. How's Santi doing? Michael: Put it this way -- you didn't kill him. John: I was just trying to get the gun. Oh, not that he doesn't deserve to die. What's up? Michael: Marcie. I need someone to unload on, bro. I got a feeling you need to do a little unloading of your own. John: Oh, I'm not sure I know what you're talking about. Michael: Natalie, Evangeline. You're in love with two women, and one of those women's husband just came back from the dead. John: Wait a minute. Where is all this coming from? Michael: Look, I am on the 35th hour of a 36-hour shift. I have absolutely zero tolerance for anything less than the truth right now. John: Ok, Natalie’s husband's back, and for her sake, I hope they live happily ever after. Michael: "Happily ever after" -- that's real nice, John. What about you? John: I'm not part of the equation. And even if I were, it wouldn't matter, because I want them to be happy. Michael: So it's you and Evangeline? John: What do you want me to say? Michael: I want you to answer the question. John: I don't want to talk about how I feel. Michael: Family trait. John: Yeah, maybe. I -- I like it when I’m around Evangeline. I miss her when she's not there, and I want her to be happy. Michael: Just like Natalie. John: I guess. The thing is I don't want to be complicating anybody's life with anything, so I'd rather just get out of the way. Michael: Why? Because you're all about happiness? John: Let's just put it this way -- at the end of the day, Natalie and Evangeline both deserve better than me. Michael: Same old John. John: Hey -- what? What's that supposed to mean? Michael: When dad died, you stepped up. You took care of me. You took care of mom. You took care of the house. You took care of everybody. You didn't take care of you. Whereas I took the road more traveled -- being a big old selfish jerk. John: So what's the moral to this little -- little ditty? Michael: If you need a lesson in selfish, I'm your man. I am such an idiot. John: Now you're on to something. I got to go. Michael: Yeah, me, too. John: See you later. Michael: See you. John walks away. Michael: I am so stupid! Stupid! It's not about me. It's not about what I want. It's about making Marcie happy. In Jessica’s hospital room, Marcie’s mood has brightened. Marcie: Some friend I am. I came to bring you flowers, and then I don't give them to you. Is there someplace I can put these? Jessica: I think a jug over there. Marcie: Oh, here's the card. Hey, Jess, thanks for listening to me. Jessica: Oh, of course. Marcie: You know, now that you helped me figure out what I need to do, I really do need to go find Michael now, right? And, I mean, maybe I should take him someplace quiet, turn off the cell phone so he can pop the question, I can say, yes? Right? Jessica: Marcie, what are you waiting for? Go. Marcie: Are you sure you don't want me to fix these -- Jessica: Just go, go. Get out of here. Please go. Marcie: Ok. Bye. Natalie walks in just as Marcie is leaving. Marcie: Hi. Bye. Natalie: Hey. Did I miss something? Jessica: I think there might be a wedding soon. Natalie: Really? Marcie and Michael? Jessica: Well, yeah, if she'll ever let him ask. Natalie: Well, it's nice to see that everything's kind of getting back to normal. Jessica: I don't think that Antonio and I will ever be normal again. We've both said some really awful things to each other, and -- and then there was Tico. Natalie, I’m really ashamed of myself. Natalie: Jess, come on. It's ok. Nobody blames you. Jessica: I don't know how Antonio is ever going to be able to look me in the face again. Natalie: Well, I'll tell you. Come on. The man is still in love with you. You feel the same way, right? Hey, it's not over yet, Jess. You and Antonio are going to be just as happy as Cristian and I are. Jessica: I'm so happy for you. Later, Michael is in Jessica’s room checking her monitors. Jessica is sleeping. Michael: Marcie was here, huh? You know, when we first met, she hated me on sight. She was right, too. I was Mr. Selfish. You know, I think I finally figured out when you love someone it means you put that person's needs in front of your own. You see, the thing is I've been trying to ask Marcie to marry me for a while now, and every time I’m about to do it, something happens and she has to go. You know, I'm thinking that she's trying to say -- without actually saying it -- that she's not ready. Which is fine, you know? I can wait. I'll wait as long as it takes. The important thing is that Marcie’s happy. And that's how I know it's the real thing. 99.9? That's not good. (picks up phone) This is Dr. McBain. Could you page Dr. Miller for me regarding Jessica Buchanan Santi? Later, Marcie and Michael are standing in the hallway. Marcie: I have to talk to -- Michael: I need to talk to you. Michael: You go first. Marcie: Well, I think what I have to say comes after what you have to say. Michael: Ok. I know that you've had a lot on your plate lately, what with your book coming out and everything that goes along with that, and I’ve been a total bonehead. Marcie: Oh, no, you haven’t. Michael: Oh, yes, I have. I've been selfish. I've been jealous of all the time you're spending on your -- listen, what I’m trying to say here is that i think that I have been pressuring you into something that you're just not ready for -- Marcie: Oh, but, Michael, I -- Michael: That I’m probably not ready for. I mean, why do we have to rush this? And we have all the time world, and, obviously, we both need it. I think that maybe we should just take a step back and give each other a little space. Marcie: Do you really mean that? Michael: Absolutely. Listen, our lives are changing at such a rapid pace that i think we both need a little perspective. Marcie: So -- so what are you saying? Michael: Well, I've been trying to ask you to marry me for the last couple of weeks, and I finally realized that we should just slow things down between us. Marcie: Really? Michael: Yeah. Yeah. You have so much going on with your book right now. I want to be supportive of that, not competitive. Marcie: So you're -- this -- this slowing down -- it's about me? You're trying to do what's best for me? Michael: Yeah. You seem -- you seem kind of surprised. Marcie: You're trying to put my needs before anything else? Michael: Right. Marcie: Uh -- well, I guess -- I guess that can't be wrong. You know, it's -- it's really not what I was expecting. But it is what love's about. Michael: Right. Marcie: Right. Michael: You know who taught me that? Marcie: No. Michael: Do you know it was you? Michael’s pager beeps Michael: Oh. It's 911. Marcie: I know. I know, go. Michael: Ok. Marcie: Go. Michael rushes away. Marcie: (tears in her eyes) Well, that wasn't the proposal I was looking for, was it? When are we ever going to get this timing down? Monday December 6, 2004 In Tico’s room, Michael it trying to save Tico’s life. The monitor flat-lines. Michael: He's coding. Get me the crash cart. Nurse: Code blue, code blue! Michael: No pulse, starting chest compressions. Bag him! One and two and three and four and five. Give me one milligram epi and escalate to five. One and two and three and -- Nurse: 02 saturation 50. Michael: Hyperventilate and give him another epi. Come on, people, we are losing him! Two, three, four, five. One, two, three, four, five. One, two, three, four, five. One, two, three, four – In the meanwhile, Natalie remembers an earlier conversation she had with Cristian. Cristian's voice: Each time they caught me, it got worse. They'd do
things. Natalie: Like what? Cristian: Hit me and -- other things. Natalie: Cristian, what -- what other things? Oh, my god. They tortured you, didn't they? Viki goes into Jessica’s room and finds her bed empty. Viki: Jessie? Jessie, are -- are you in the bathroom? Jessica? Viki rushes out into the hallway just as Cris walks up. Viki: Oh, my god. Cristian -- Cristian: Mrs. Davidson. What's wrong? Viki: Jessica's gone! She's not in her room. She's gone! Back in Tico’s room, Michael is doing everything he can to save Tico. Michael: Charge to 300! Nurse: 300. Michael: Clear! Nurse: Ready. Michael: How long has he been down? Nurse: Five minutes. Michael: Take over compressions. What's happening, Tico? Michael looks at the electrical outlet and notices that the plug is on the floor. Michael: What the -- somebody pulled the plug on you. Outside of Tico’s room, Antonio finds a distraught and woozy Jessica. Jessica: Antonio, what happened? Viki: Nurse, where's my daughter, please? Nurse: I believe she's in her room asleep. Viki: No, she's not. Her bed is empty. Has something happened? Nurse: Not that I know of. I'll call security. Viki: Thank you. Oh, lord. Cristian, help me find her, please. Antonio tries to figure out what is going on with Jessica. Antonio: What were you doing out of bed? In Tico’s room, Michael is still working on Tico. Michael: Last resort, shocking at 360, clear. In the meanwhile, Jessica can provide little useful information to Antonio. Jessica: I don't know, I woke up and no one was there, so – In Tico’s room, Michael tries to recharge Tico’s heart. Michael: Come on! The monitor beeps rapidly. Nurse: No pulse. Michael: Clear. Michael zaps Tico again. The monitor beeps. Michael: Come on, Tico! Come on, man! Nurse: Are we calling it? Michael: Fight! Tico does not respond. Michael looks sad and frustrated. Michael: Yes. Time of death -- 8:46 P.M.
Natalie and John are talking. Natalie: Well, I better get home. I have to get up early and get to the hospital. I want to be there when Cristian wakes up. John: Would you like me to walk you or -- John’s cell phone rings. John: Excuse me. It's my brother Michael. Hello? Yeah, what's up, Michael? I'll be right there. Natalie: What's wrong? John: Tico Santi’s dead. Natalie: Really? Well, I can't say that I’m sorry. That man got better than he deserved. John: Maybe not. Natalie: What do you mean? John: According to Michael, he was murdered. At the hospital, Michael is standing outside of Tico’s room. Michael: There is supposed to be a guard posted outside that door at all times! Where the hell was he? In the meanwhile, Antonio tries to hustle Jessica away just as Viki and Cris walk up. Antonio: Come on, let's get you back to your room. Viki: Jessica -- Thank god! Jessica: Mom -- Viki: Honey, what -- what are you doing here? Why are you out of bed? Antonio: I found her laying in the hallway. Viki: What? Antonio: She must have fainted. Viki: Are you all right, sweetheart? Come on, you know what? I think we should just get her back to her bed. Antonio: Yeah. Viki: We'll get a doctor to look at you, all right? And check you out -- my goodness -- oh, Dr. McBain. Listen, Jessica apparently fainted. Would you please check her out? Michael: Absolutely. Listen, you're going to be ok. Cristian: What's going on, doc? Michael: Tico Santi is dead. Viki: Really? Well, I'm sorry, but his death wasn't exactly unexpected, was it? Michael: His life-support system was cut -- intentionally. Later in Jessica’s hospital room, a nurse is checking her vital signs. Viki: How is she? Jessica: I'm all right, mom. Nurse: She needs her rest. Dr. McBain ordered a mild sedative so she stays put for a while. Antonio: You need to rest, too. Cristian: I'm ok. Antonio: No, no, you're not. What were you doing out of bed anyway? Cristian: I was going crazy in that bed. I wanted to go for a walk. I ran into Mrs. Davidson, and she asked me to help look for Jess. So we did. Lucky for her you were there. Antonio: Yeah. Cristian: So what were you doing outside Tico’s room? Antonio: I went to the chapel with Adriana, light a candle for Jessica. Cristian: Did you say a prayer for Tico, too? In Tico’s hospital room, John is surveying the scene. Michael: Let me get him cleaned up before the family gets here, John. John: Oh, I don't think you have to worry about too many family members showing up at Tico’s bedside, if you know what I mean. Michael: Well, at least let me cover him up. John: It's a crime scene, Mikey. Nobody touches anything until CSU finishes processing. What was the cause of death? Michael: Respiratory arrest and heart failure, officially. John: Yeah? Any chance that it was caused by this? Michael: I didn't even see it. I was too busy trying to save his life. John: Well, last time I checked, these need to be plugged in. Any chance this could have been an accident? Michael: No, John. No way, ok? Listen, my team is solid, ok? Those machines are checked all the time, and plugs don't just fall out of the wall. All right, what I want to know is, where the cop who was supposed to be posted in front of his door was, Johnny? John: Officer Wagner wasn't on duty? Michael: No! And for that matter, this is a hospital, not a prison. And I don't like when patients die on my watch. John: Ok. Who else knows Tico’s dead? Michael: Cristian, Mrs. Davidson, Antonio, and -- John: Antonio was here? Michael: Yeah. He found Jessica passed out in the hallway. John: Where? Michael: Just outside the waiting room. At the hospital, Natalie rushes into Cristian’s room. Natalie: Cristian? Cristian: Right here. Natalie: Oh, god. Hey, did you hear about Tico? Cristian: Yeah. Yeah. A real tragedy. Natalie: Well, I just wanted to come and check and make sure you were ok. Cristian: I feel a hell of a lot better now that he's out of our lives for good.
In Jessica’s hospital room, Viki is sitting at her bedside. Jessica: Tico -- Viki: Shh. Sweetheart, it's ok. You're safe now. He can't hurt you anymore. In the hospital corridor, Adriana is talking to Antonio. Adriana: Antonio, is it true about Tico? Antonio: His life-support system failed. Adriana: I don't understand. How can that happen? Antonio: It wasn't an accident. Someone pulled the plug. Adriana: He was murdered? Do they know who did it? Michael walks up to Antonio and Adriana. Michael: Hey, Antonio, John's looking for you. Antonio: Why? Michael: Well, he'd like to ask you some questions -- about Tico Santi. In the meanwhile, John is interrogating Officer Wagner. John: Where were you when this happened? Officer Wagner: I was helping the nurse with a drunk and disorderly down the hall. John: Your job was to keep an eye on Santi. Officer Wagner: Well, Santi was in a coma. The drunk and disorderly wasn’t. I didn't think anything was going to happen. John: Good call, Wagner. You're fired. Officer. Wagner: Hey, you can't just -- John: I just did. Now get the hell out of my sight. I said get out of my sight! Officer Wagner: You're going to hear from my PBA rep. John: Yeah, sure. Anything? Antonio walks up to John. Antonio: You wanted to see me? John: Yeah, yeah. Michael told me he -- he saw you out here right after Santi coded. Antonio: Yeah. John: So what were you doing? Antonio: Helping Jessica. She passed out on the floor. John: Well, maybe she saw something. Antonio: She was unconscious. John: I'm still going to have to talk to her. Antonio: John, wait. Tuesday, December 7, 2004
At the hospital, Michael and John are in Tico’s room. John: In your opinion, could Jessica have turned off Tico’s life support? Michael: I doubt it. I'm surprised she even made it out of her hospital bed. John: No chance she had a burst of energy or something? Michael: No way. The amount of drugs she was on, she never could've done it. John, don't touch the machine. John: Oh. So you're pretty sure about this? Michael: You want a second opinion? John: No. I'm just covering my bases, Michael. Michael: Listen, John, I know that you're going to want to question Jessica. Could you wait till tomorrow? John: Mikey, a guy is dead, and she might have seen who did it. Sooner or later, I’m going to have to talk to her. Michael: Did Jessica say that she had seen somebody kill Tico? John: I'll know more when I talk to her, Michael. Michael: But you think she did. Or somebody told you that she did. John: Hey, do me a favor. Tell me about these drugs she had in her system. I mean, are these the kind of meds that could cause her to hallucinate? Michael: Well, everybody reacts differently, so, yeah, it's a definite possibility. John: Or she could've really witnessed Tico’s murder. Michael: Man. How do you solve that? John: I don't know. We're waiting for the reports to come back from CSU. Right now, but until then, Jessica’s all we got.
Later, orderlies come to take Tico away. John: Hey, hold up. Michael: He was released to the morgue, John. I got to take him down. John: Just give me a minute. Michael gives him a minute then Tico is wheeled away. John: It's a crap job sometimes, Mikey. This guy -- he hurt a lot of people, and now I have to be the jerk that goes and tries to find out who did this to him. In these cases, sometimes I wonder who the hell's going to care. Michael shrugs. John: Couple more night classes, I could've been a dentist. Thursday, December 9, 2004 At The Palace, Hayes shows Michael and Marcie the art work for the book cover. Hayes: So, here it is, the cover of "The Killing Club." Chip Kidd sent it over to me this morning. Marcie: I love it. Michael, isn't it great? Michael: It's very cool. Paige walks up to the table. Paige: Excuse me, Dr. McBain. Michael: Dr. Miller. Paige: Do you have a minute? Michael: Sure. I am so proud of you, sweetie. Marcie: Thank you. Michael walks away with Paige. Marcie: I can't believe this. It's my name and it's in print. Hayes: Do you remember that stylist I was telling you about, Violet? Marcie: Yes, just Violet. Hayes: Exactly. Well, I've arranged for her to come to Llanview. You have an appointment in 20 minutes. Marcie: Are you kidding? Hayes: I've also got a personal shopper for you -- Marcie: Wow. Hayes: And a trainer and a membership at the most exclusive gym in town. Well, hey, you want to look your best for the publicity photos and the press junket, don't you? Marcie: Well, yeah, of course, but, Hayes, I don't -- Hayes: Ah -- beauty brings in the bucks. And the camera adds pounds, trust me. At the bar, Paige fills Michael in on the fallout from Tico’s death. Paige: The hospital wants you to fill out a statement about Tico Santi’s death. Michael: Why? I can't see that that has anything to do with me. Paige: You were the doctor on duty. You're also the doctor that discovered Mr. Santi arresting. Unfortunately, it has everything to do with you. Michael: You read my report. I did everything I could for Mr. Santi. Paige: Well, then, you shouldn't have any problem with the hospital board. Michael: He was your patient. Paige: The board is well aware that I was off duty when this incident occurred. Michael: "Incident"? It was a murder. Marcie walks up to Michael and Paige. Marcie: Michael? I'm sorry to interrupt. I have to go take care of some stuff for the book with Hayes, ok? Michael: Yeah, that's fine. Marcie: I'll be back in about an hour or so. Michael: Marcie, that's fine. Just meet me back here, ok? Marcie: Ok. Hayes: You ready to start working on the new Marcie Walsh? Marcie: Sure. Hayes: Come on. Marcie and Hayes leave. Paige: They just want you to file a statement. It's not unusual for a doctor on duty to have to do that in this kind of a situation, and I'm not implying anything here. Michael: It implies that I was somehow involved in Mr. Santi's death, that I was responsible -- Paige: No, no -- Michael: Yeah -- Dr. Miller, I'm not an idiot, ok? I know that if the board doesn't like what I have to say, if they find me negligent, I lose my license. I go down for this. Paige: You're overreacting, Michael. Michael: No. I think that I’m seeing things very clear. You guys are looking for a fall guy and I’m it. Later, Michael is sitting at the bar working on a statement. Michael: "I realize that Mr. Santi was in cardiac arrest --" Marcie and Hayes walk back into the restaurant. Marcie is all dolled up with a new hairstyle and a fancy dress. She rushes over to Michael. Marcie: We're back. Michael: Huh? Oh. Hi. Marcie: Hi. Hayes: Marcie, I'm going to call Hyperion, see if those galleys are ready. Marcie: Ok. Michael: "Started CPR. right away --" Marcie: What's going on? Michael: Oh, nothing much. I just found out that the hospital wants a written statement about everything that happened the night Tico Santi died. They're looking for someone to blame. Marcie: But Tico was murdered. Michael: Yeah, he was murdered inside the hospital. It's a political embarrassment, Marcie, and somebody's got to take the fall. Marcie: So? Michael: So, Marcie, this is huge. If the hospital board finds that I was negligent in any way, I could lose my license to practice medicine forever. Marcie: Michael, you are a great doctor, and everybody there knows that. Michael: Yeah, that doesn't matter, Marcie, not when they're looking for somebody to blame. Marcie: They're not going to blame you, Michael. We'll do this together, ok? Please calm down. Hayes: Hey, Marcie, good news. Hyperion has the bound galleys ready for your approval, and I was able to get you an appointment with Paolo. Marcie: Oh. Michael: Who's Paolo? Hayes: Marcie's new trainer and nutritionist. Michael: You have a nutritionist? Marcie: You know, beauty brings in the bucks, right? Michael: Right. Marcie: Listen, I'm really sorry, but I can't go. I need to stay here. I have to help Michael with something. Hayes: Well, this is Hyperion we're talking about. Marcie: No, I know. I realize that, but I -- Michael: Marcie -- Marcie: What? Michael: Go, it's ok. Marcie: No. No, Michael. Michael, I want to help you with this. Michael: Marcie, it's fine. I'll -- I'll take care of it. Just give me a call when you're done, ok? Marcie: Ok. Here. Marcie and Hayes leave. Friday, December 10, 2004 At the hospital, Marcie walks up to Michael in the hallway. Marcie: Hey. Michael: Hi. You're done already? Marcie: Yeah. Michael: So, how'd it feel to see your words in print for the first time? Marcie: Well, it was amazing. You know what? Enough about me. I couldn't stop thinking about you. Have you handed in your statement about Tico’s death yet? Michael: Yeah. Marcie: And? Michael: It's up to the board now. Paige walks up to Michael. Paige: Dr. McBain? Michael: Yeah. Paige: The board read your statement. Michael: And? Paige: They have a few more questions. They want to see you first thing tomorrow. Michael: Well, I don't know why. I put everything that happened that night into my report -- every detail. Paige: I told you, Tico Santi was a high-profile patient. Look, Michael, this isn't unusual. Everything is going to be all right. Excuse me. Paige walks away. Marcie: Uh-huh. See? Michael, she said everything is going to be ok. Michael: Yeah, I know. What I want to know is why the hospital is more concerned about their reputation than they are about the fact that we lost a patient on our watch. John walks up to Michael and Marcie. John: Hey. Michael: Hey. John: You got a minute? Marcie: Hi. You know what? I'll be in with Jessica, ok? Michael: Yeah. Marcie: See you later. John: Thanks, Marcie. Marcie leaves. John: I got a few questions about Tico Santi’s murder. Michael: Yeah, well, get in line. In Jessica’s hospital, room Marcie is happy
to hear some good news from Jess. Marcie: Hey. That's great news. I know you're going to be glad to get out of here tomorrow. Jessica: Yeah, well, I'm going to miss Todd and Blair’s wedding, but -- Marcie: Oh, I'm sorry. Jessica: Hey, there's going to be another wedding on the horizon soon, right? Marcie: Well, actually, things got a little messed up. Jessica: Oh, no. What happened? I thought that you were sure that mike was going to pop the question. Marcie: Well, he was but, you know, he's just had a lot of things on his mind and we've both been busy. Just don't mention anything, ok? Jessica: Marcie, what's wrong? Marcie: Well, I kind of need a little favor. Jessica: Sure. Anything. Marcie: Well, you know, Michael just feels really guilty about Tico’s death. Jessica: Marcie, that wasn't his fault. Marcie: No, no, I know, but he's never lost a patient before, and I was kind of wondering if maybe you would be willing, you know, just to say something to him, tell him that Tico’s death wasn't his fault, you know, that whoever pulled the plug was. I just -- I really know that it would mean a lot coming from you. In the hospital corridor, John is shocked by Michael’s news. John: Slow down. The hospital's going to do what? Michael: If this Santi thing gets ugly, the hospital needs somebody to take the fall. That's me. John: Michael, why don't you let me talk to them? Michael: No, Johnny, Johnny, don't do that, all right? John: No, I feel like there's – Paige walks up to Michael. Paige: Dr. McBain, could you check on Mrs. Elliot in 404? John: We'll finish this later? Michael: Yeah. John: Ok. Michael rushes off. Paige: Anything I can do for you, detective? John: Yeah. You can tell the hospital board my brother had nothing to do with what went down with Tico Santi. Paige: Look, they just have a few more questions. John: That was our fault. There was a security breach. Michael worked like hell to save Tico’s life. Paige: And I'm sure they're going to take all of that into account. Anything else? John: Well, now that you mention it, is Jessica Buchanan -- is she strong enough for me to ask her a few questions? Paige: Look, five minutes, ok, and no more. And if she gets agitated, I want you out of there. John: I understand. Thank you. John walks into Jessica’s room. John: Hi. Jessica: Oh, hey. John: You up for answering a few questions? Marcie: Yeah, I'll see you later. Remember what we talked about, ok? Jessica: Promise. Marcie: Thanks. Jessica: Ok. Marcie: Bye. John: Bye, Marcie. Marcie leaves. John: You feeling any better? Jessica: I guess. John: Ok. Jess, you know why I’m here. It's not my favorite assignment, but I got to find Tico’s killer. Jessica: I don't remember anything that happened that night. John: All right, well, maybe you can just give it a try, you know? Now that you're off the medication, maybe something will come back to you. So maybe you could just think back to that night. What happened right before you fainted? What'd you see? Jessica looks confused. John: You were in the hallway right outside Tico’s room. Now, did you see someone go in? Was there someone in there when you arrived? Jessica: John, I don't know, ok? I can't remember. John: I know you saw something that night, Jessica. Jessica: Who told you that? John: Doesn't matter how I know. What's important is that you try to remember what you saw. Jessica: I can’t. John: Just try. Jessica: John, I can't, ok? I can't remember! I'm sorry, but I can't! Michael walks into Jessica’s room and overhears John pressing Jessica. Michael: That's enough, John. John: Yeah. If you do remember something, will you give me a call? Jessica nods. John: Thank you. John leaves and Jessica looks at Michael gratefully. Jessica: Thank you. Michael: Oh. No problem. It's my job. You feeling ok? Jessica: Yeah, thanks. You were on duty the night that Tico died? Michael: Yeah. Jessica: It wasn't your fault. I don't blame you for what happened, so please don't blame yourself. Michael: Thanks. It means a lot. Michael finishes checking Jessica’s vitals then leaves. He bumps into Marcie in the hall. Michael: Hey. Marcie: Hey! Well, you're in a better mood. Michael: Yeah, I am. Listen, I got rounds. Marcie: Ok. Michael: See you later? Marcie: Mm-hmm. Michael leaves. In the meanwhile, Antonio goes into Jessica’s room. Antonio: I understand you're getting out soon. Jessica: Tomorrow. Antonio: You don't seem too happy. Jessica: John was just here. He was asking me questions about that night, and I don't know what to tell him. Antonio: Well, according to John, I’m his prime suspect. Jessica: Or was it you, Antonio? Did you kill Tico?
Later, Michael approaches Marcie in the hallway. He is obviously irritated. Michael: Hey, hey, Marcie. Marcie: Hey! Michael: Did you tell Jessica to talk to me? Marcie: Well, no, not -- not exactly, Michael. What happened was -- Michael: Damn it, Marcie. Listen, you can't go around fixing all my problems for me all the time, ok? Marcie: Listen, I was just trying to help, Michael. She came in and -- Michael: Yeah, well, do me a favor -- don’t. Marcie looks crushed.
