Michael: What's going on, John?

John: Mikey.  Hey, you just getting in?

Michael: Yeah.  I just pulled a double at the hospital.  Hey, listen, man, why didn't you call me back?

Evangeline: Oh, that's my fault.  I made him turn his cell phone off at the wedding.

John: That reminds me.

Michael: Right on.  So, what do you got, man?  I mean, you got any new connections between Marcie's book and these killings?

John: I'm working on it, Michael.

Michael: That's it?  You're working on it?  What are you waiting for, John?  I mean, what if the killer goes after Marcie next?

Marcie's voice: "Dear Julie, I'll never forget our time together at the shack.  Stay out of trouble.  Love, Marcie."

[Knock on door]

Marcie: Who is it?

Mr. Walsh: It's us, Marcie.

Marcie: Oh.  What are you guys doing here so late?

Ron: You want us to leave or --

Marcie: No! No, get back here.

John: Hey, do me a favor and get me that number, will you, jack?

Michael: Hey, do not walk away from me, John.  What, am I wrong?  Marcie wrote the book.  She's got to be on that hit list someplace.

John: You're not wrong.  It's a long list, Michael.  Right now anybody that worked on that project could be a target.

Michael: Well, then, she is in trouble.

John: Thanks, Jack.  Roxy, do me a favor and give me a minute here?

Roxy: Yeah, don't forget the rent, buddy.

John: I won't forget the rent.  Look, if the killer is in fact using Marcie's book as some kind of guide, yeah, she could be.

Michael: What are we supposed to do, John?  What, do we just sit around and wait for the next person to get whacked?  That person could be Marcie.

Evangeline: Michael, just calm down, please? Let john take care of this?

Michael: Oh, yeah, yeah, he's taking care of things.  He's out doing weddings while Nick Messina is stalking Marcie.

John: Mike, settle down, all right?  Relax.  We have Marcie with 24-hour protection, but go back a second.  This guy Messina -- he was one of the love crew, right?

Michael: Yeah.

John: All right, do you know where he is?  You know where he lives?  He's the one guy on the list I haven't been able to question yet.

Michael: Well, I just ripped him a new one for sneaking around Marcie's place.

John: When were you going to tell me that?

Michael: I -- I tried, John.  I tried to call you.  You never picked up the phone, ok?  What is it, John?  Do you know something about this nick kid?

John: No.  I'm always a little suspicious when someone becomes scarce during a murder investigation.

Marcie: Well, come on, take your coats off.  Come on in, make yourselves at home.

Ron: Ok.

Marcie: It's so great to see you guys.  Dad, why didn't you tell me you were coming into town?

Mr. Walsh: Since when I do need permission to see my kids?

Ron: Well, actually, he came to see me, see, but, my place is being painted, so we thought maybe we, you know, could crash here, right?

Marcie: You guys realize you're horrible at poker, right?  You have terrible poker faces.  Who told you about the murders?

Ron: Michael.

Mr. Walsh: He's worried about you.

Marcie: Well, I'm fine.  You can see I'm fine.

Ron: Marcie, this is serious, ok?  Look, you wrote that book, and now people are being murdered.

Marcie: Hey, you don't think I know that, Ronnie?  All right, Julie and Hudson were my friends, and now they're dead because of me.

Mr. Walsh: That's not what he meant, Marcie.  We're worried, too.

Marcie: Well, I just want them to find out who's ever responsible for th--

Michael: So why didn't you tell me you couldn't find Nick?

John: Because I'm in the police business, Michael, and you're in the hospital business.

Michael: Marcie is my business and you should have told me.

Evangeline: Michael, why don't you just tell john what happened so he can figure out what to do with it?

Michael: I found nick creeping around Marcie's apartment.  He said that he'd been real messed up since Julie died.  You know, he said that -- he said that he was in love with her.

John: Did Messina say where he was living these days?

Michael: No, but I'm pretty sure Marcie could find out.

John: Yeah? Can you call Marcie and ask her?

Michael: You know, I'm trying to --

John: Mike, just make the call.

Ron: Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.  What the hell are you doing here?

Marcie: Ronnie, Ronnie, it's ok.  It's just Nick.

Nick: Marcie, I'm sorry.  I didn't mean to scare you.

Marcie: Well, how did you even get in here?

Nick: Oh, I still have my key from when I lived here.

Marcie: Oh.

Nick: It's just habit. I just walked in.

Ron: Yeah, well, you don't live here anymore.

Marcie: So, what are you doing here?  Is everything ok?

Nick: Well, I just felt like a jerk, coming here all lit up like that, you know?  Getting wasted isn't going to bring Julie back.

Marcie: No.

Nick: I don't blame Michael for throwing me around, either.

Marcie: No, you were upset.  I completely understand.

Nick: And I lost my wallet.  I think maybe I dropped it when Michael grabbed me?

Marcie: Oh, well, I haven't seen it.

Nick: Oh.  Well, do you mind if I look around?

Marcie: No, go ahead.

Nick: Ok.

Ron: I'll help you look.

[Phone rings]

Marcie: Hello.

Michael: Marcie, it's me, Michael.

Marcie: I thought you might call.  My dad and Ron are here.  You wouldn't happen to know anything about that, would you?

Michael: Oh, listen, don't be mad.  I was worried about you.

Marcie: Actually, I'm really glad they're here.  Nick just came in.  He almost scared the life out of me.

Michael: Nick came back?

John: Hey, is he there now?

Michael: Is he -- is he still there?

Marcie: Yeah.  He's looking for his wallet.

John: Let me talk to her a second.  Hey, Marcie, are you alone with Messina?

Marcie: No, no, dad and Ron are here.  Is there something wrong?

John: No, no problem.  Do me a favor.  Can I speak to Ron for a second?

Marcie: Oh, yeah, sure.  Hold on.  Ronnie?  The phone's for you.

Ron: Hello?

John: Ron, hey, it's John Mc Bain.  Hey, be cool about it, but can you do me a favor and keep Messina there until I get there?

Ron: Ok, not a problem.

John: I'm on my way.

Ron: John wants to talk to Nick.  He wants us to keep him here.

Marcie: I don't know.

Nick: It's got to be somewhere.  Oh.  I found it.

Marcie: Oh.

Nick: Look, I'm sorry I scared you -- twice now.

Marcie: It's ok.

Nick: I don't know, I'm just -- I'm not thinking straight anymore.  I'll see you.

Marcie: No, no, no, you can't leave yet.

Nick: Why not?

John: I'm sorry.  I don't know how long I'm going to be.

Evangeline: Go.  Just go.  Don't worry about it.

John: Ok.

Michael: I'm coming. 

John: No, you're not.

Michael: I am, and don't give me any crap about it being police business, ok, because it's Marcie we're talking about, and I'm going.

John: Michael, you did the right thing calling her family, all right?  Now, look, I'm going to call a surveillance team on my way over.  Just relax, ok?

Michael: What if Marcie needs me?

John: I'll have her call you.  Ok?  Bye.

Michael: No, forget it.  I'm going.

Evangeline: Michael, he'll call us.  Just let him do this by the book.

Michael: Fine.  Fine.

Nigel: Detective Mc Bain.  Oh, dear.  Ms. Williamson.

Evangeline: Nigel, hi.

Nigel: Oh, dear.

[Bell rings]

Roxy: Ooh, la, la.  Where you been, sailor?

Nigel: Oh, around.  Detective Mc Bain must be hot on the trail.  I do hope he's found Mr. Buchanan.  Then again, perhaps not.

Roxy: Oh, I know what he's not doing -- paying his rent.

Nigel: I don't think you need to concern yourself with that, Roxanne.

Roxy: Oh, I think I do.  But, you know what? We can lock him out.  We can take his stuff.  We could try to sell it.  Ever seen his crib.  He ain't got squat. So, what's going on with your boss man?  Any word yet?

Nigel: I'm afraid Mr. Buchanan is still incommunicado.

Roxy: South America -- oh, baby, I wish I was there.  You know, when they find him, they're going to fry his butt for what he did to Blair.

Marcie: I -- I thought you might want to have this.

Nick: This is why I couldn't leave?

Marcie: Well, the thing is --

Nick: Marcie, you already gave me a copy of your book -- at the book signing you did on campus, remember?

Marcie: No, I know.  This is Julie's book.  The police found it in the car, and -- I don't know -- I thought that you might want to have it.

Nick: "Stay out of trouble."  Bet you never thought you'd be saying that and she'd die a week later, huh?

Marcie: No.  And I feel so responsible, Nick. I'm so sorry.

Nick: Marcie, Marcie, it's not your fault that she died in that wreck.

John: What makes you think somebody's at fault?

Nick: What are you doing here?

John: You're a tough guy to track down, nick.

Nick: Did Michael send you?  First, he throws me around, now he sends in the heavy artillery?  What, is this about Julie and Hudson?

John: Could be.  What do you know about them?

Nick: I know that they're dead, and that Michael thinks that I had something to do with it.  Is that what he told you?

John: No, no, he just told me about you sneaking around outside Marcie's house.  So, when was the last time you saw Julie?

Nick: Oh, come on!  Julie died in a car wreck.  How could that be anything but an accident?  Wasn't it?

John: Here's how I think this is going to work.  I'm going to ask the questions, you're going to answer them.  Did you see Julie the night she died?

Nick: Yes.  We all did.  She was here working on Hudson's memorial. And then she left to have a couple of drinks with her new bosses and we were supposed to get together later, but she never showed.

John: Get together where?

Nick: My place.

John: Anyone see you there?

Nick: I didn't kill Julie!  I was in love with her!  Ask Marcie.

John: Marcie?

Marcie: She never said anything to me about you guys.  Nick, I never saw you guys together.  I only know what he told me the other night, John.

Nick: Look, we were together for a while, but we couldn't tell anybody.

John: Ok.  I heard somewhere that Julie's new job was going to take her out of town.  Were you upset that she was leaving?

Nick: I wanted her to get that job.  Ok?  I was happy for her.  Why are you asking me all this stuff?

John: You ok, Nick?  You seem a little tense.

Nick: Well, what do you expect?  Huh?  You just told me that my girlfriend was murdered!  Why would somebody want to do that to her?

John: How'd you get along with Prescott, Nick?

Nick: Pretty well, I guess.  I mean, we all lived here for quite a while, so --

John: Did the two of them ever get together without anybody knowing?

Nick: She wasn't like that.  What are you getting at here, man?  Huh?  Is that what Michael was talking about the other night?

John: Nick, I sense anger, and we're just talking here.

Nick: I don't have to take this.

John: Sit your ass down.  You're going to answer my questions.  We can do it here or we can do it at the station.  Either way, I'm going to get what I want

Michael: I'm going over there.

Evangeline: Don't, Michael.  John knows what he's doing.

Michael: John should have called by now.

Evangeline: Look, it hasn't been that long.

Michael: Really?  Is that why you keep looking at your watch?  Evangeline, I'm worried.

Evangeline: I can see that.  But Marcie is fine.  She has John there, she has her brother, her father.  She's perfectly safe.

Evangeline: Have you told her yet?

Michael: Have I told her what?

Evangeline: Have you told Marcie that you still love her?

Michael: Love is just a word.

Evangeline: You and your brother must see the same movies.

Michael: What's that supposed to mean?

Evangeline: Look, as far as I can tell, Marcie still loves you, too, so what's the problem?  Why aren't you together?

Michael: Well, the problem is that there are just too many problems.

Evangeline: Such as?

Michael: Such as fighting over nothing, fighting over everything, fighting because we're fighting.

Evangeline: Sounds familiar.

Michael: No, look, you and john don't fight the way I do with Marcie.

Evangeline: Well, we -- we disconnect, you know?  But, we keep working on it, you know?  I love him too much to give up.

Michael: Is love enough?  I mean, what about all that other stuff?

 Nick: I didn't kill anyone.

John: Well, then you got nothing to worry about.

Nick: Why would somebody want to kill Julie and make it look like a car wreck?  And Hudson died in a fire!  How are those connected?

Marcie: Someone's copying my book.  The murders are happening exactly the way that I wrote them.

Ron: John can handle this, Marcie.

Marcie: I'm sorry.

Nick: That's what this is all about?  I haven't even read Marcie's book yet!  Any nut job could be out there copying this!

John: Do me a favor, Nick.  Write your name and address down in this book.  Give me a phone number, too, please.  Are you going to be there when I come looking for you?

Nick: Unless I'm out killing somebody, yeah.

John: Keep mouthing off, kid.  Next time we'll do this down at the station where I don't have to be so charming.  Believe me, whoever did this is going down for it.  You understand?

Nick: Good, because whoever did kill Julie, I want them to burn for it.  Thanks for the book, Marcie.

Michael: John.  What's going on?  How's Marcie?  Is she ok?

John: She's fine, all right?  I got a unit out in front of her place, and she's inside with Ron and her dad.

Michael: Did you bust Nick?

John: Didn't feel right, Mike.  He couldn't come to terms with Tanaka and Prescott being murdered.

Michael: So you got nothing out of him?

John: Well, it didn't --

Michael: Come on, John!

John: It didn't help that you tipped him off!

Michael: Yeah?  Well, what was I supposed to do?  Marcie was -- Marcie was in danger, ok?

John: Right!

Michael: He was stalking her!

John: Right!  He told me you accused him of murdering them!  You gave him a heads-up.

Michael: Yeah, well, I didn't know what else to do, ok?  He was -- he was stalking her.

Evangeline: Ok, look, it's late.  It sounds to me like John handled things with Nick.

John: Yeah, for now.

Evangeline: Ok, so let's call it a night.  How about that?  Why don't we call it a night?

Michael: Yeah.

John: Yeah, that sounds like a good idea.

Michael: Ok.  I don't think I'm going to get much sleep, though.

John: Give it your best.

Michael: Hey, John?

John: Yeah.

Michael: Thanks.  Thanks for looking in on Marcie.

John: You'll be all right?

Michael: Yeah.  Yeah.  I'm going to be ok.

Roxy: Mc Bain?  Check, please.

Marcie: You really don't have to spend the night, daddy.  I'll be fine.

Mr. Walsh: Are you kidding?  This place has more traffic than grand central station.

Ron: Yeah, even after midnight.  So, I think you can just forget about it, sis, because you're not getting rid of us.

Marcie: Ok.

Mr. Walsh: Well, I'm beat.  I'm going up to bed.

Ron: I'm right behind you, Pops.

Marcie: Ok.  I think I'm going to stay up a little bit longer.  I'm still a little wired, ok?

Mr. Walsh: Not too late.

Marcie: Yes, daddy.

Mr. Walsh: You need your rest.

Marcie: Yes, daddy.

Ron: Good night.

Michael: Hello?

Marcie's voice: I've always loved mystery novels.

Michael: Marcie?

Marcie's voice: Ever since I was a little girl, I wanted to write a murder mystery of my own.  And now, to actually see "The Killing Club" in print with my name on the cover, it's like a dream come true.

Michael: Who is this?  Who is this?  Answer me, damn it!

[Phone hangs up]

Michael: Marcie.

[Gas hisses]

Marcie, are you in there?

Michael: Oh.  Marcie, honey, where are you?  Marcie!  Come on, come on, come on.  Oh, my God.  Oh, my God.  Oh, my God.  Marcie!  Marcie.  Marcie, honey.  Marcie, honey.  Are you ok?  Marcie?  Marcie, sweetie?  Ok, ok, you're alive.  You're alive.  Marcie, sweetie, you got to wake up.  You got to wake up.  Please, please, please wake up!  My life goes a million miles a minute.

Marcie: Michael, I don't feel good.

Michael: I know, we got to get you out of here!  The house is full of gas.  There's a gas leak someplace.  This house is full of it.  Come on.

Marcie: My -- my dad and Ron are inside.

Michael: I know, I know.  We got to get you outside.  Who's inside?  Ron and your dad?

Marcie: Ron and my dad.

Michael: Inside?  Ok, listen, I am going to go inside and get them.  My phone is in the pocket.  Call 911 right now!

Marcie: Michael, be careful.  Daddy, come on, get out.  You ok?  It's ok.  Are you all right?

Mr. Walsh: What's happening?

Marcie: I think there was a gas leak or something inside the house.

Mr. Walsh: Where's Ron?

Marcie: He's still inside, but Michael went to get him.  You didn't -- you didn't see him?

Mr. Walsh: I wasn't even thinking.  I woke up, I could barely breathe.  I came down the back stairs.  You stay right here.

Marcie: No, no, no, daddy -- daddy, no!  Daddy, no, don't put on a light switch or anything, ok?  The whole house could blow up!

Marcie: Please hurry up, ok?  Michael?  Ronnie?  Dad?  Dad!  Dad, you ok?  Are you ok?  Oh, my God.  Ronnie, are you ok?

Michael: Yeah, yeah, he's all right.  They're all right.

Marcie: Oh, my God, you saved our lives!  If it weren't for you, we'd all be dead!  Oh, Michael.

Ron: What the hell happened in there?

Michael: Must have been a gas leak.

Marcie: All we had to do is flip the switch and the whole house would've blown up.

Ron: I got to go and turn it off.

Michael: Yeah, I'm going to go open the ground-floor windows.

Marcie: No, no, no, don't stay too long in there!  Dad, are you all right?  Is it your heart?  Are you ok?

Mr. Walsh: I woke up, I heard -- I heard Michael yelling and the shades were drawn, so the room was dark.  I went for the lamp.

Marcie: It's ok.

Mr. Walsh: I went for the lamp and --

Marcie: It's ok.

Mr. Walsh: My head was killing me, and I stumbled --

Marcie: Are you sure?

Mr. Walsh: And I accidentally knocked it off the table.

Marcie: Are you sure you're all right, daddy?

Mr. Walsh: I'm ok, honey.

Marcie: Yeah?

Mr. Walsh: I'm all right, sweetheart.

Marcie: Ok.

Mr. Walsh: What is it, son?

Ron: The gas pipe -- it looks like somebody sawed through it.

Marcie: What?

Ron: Yeah and the storm door -- the lock has been cut.

Marcie: Are you telling me someone broke into the basement?

Ron: Yes, yeah.

Marcie: No, no.  No, no, no, this can't be happening, ok, Ronnie?  This can't be happening!

Michael: I got all the windows on the ground floor open.  What's going on, sweetie?

Marcie: Someone broke into the basement and they cut the gas pipe.

Michael: Are you serious?

Marcie: My dad, my brother, and me, Michael -- we were in a house full of fumes.  They were trying to kill us, just like in the book!

Evangeline: Well, I guess I'll go take a shower.

John: Ok.

Evangeline: All by myself.

John: Well, I showered three days ago.  I'm fine.

Evangeline: Are you sure about that?

John: I'm very sure.

Evangeline: I'm inviting you.

John: No.  You know, all your brains evaporate in the shower.

Evangeline: That must be the problem.

John: There you go.

[Phone rings]

John: Michael, hey.

Michael: Hey, John, it's me.  You got to get down to the cottage right now.

John: What happened?

Michael: It's Marcie.  It looks like somebody tried to kill her and her family.  Somebody tried to gas them.

John: Ok, listen, Mike, there should be a unit in the area.  You find them, all right?  You need an ambulance?

Michael: No, don't worry about it.  It's already covered.

John: Ok.  Hey, Mike?

Michael: Yeah.

John: Be careful.

Evangeline: What happened?

John: Remember the warning about the where and the when?  Marcie's house.  Now.

Evangeline: My God.

[Ron coughs]

Ron: I just can't believe I didn't wake up.

Marcie: None of us did, Ronnie.  The fumes got to us while we were sleeping.  That was the point.

Ron: Yeah.  Who would want to do that?  Who would want to take your book and bring it to life?  Why?  Why would someone do that?

Marcie: I don't know.

Mr. Walsh: You're coming to Jersey.

Marcie: Dad, I'm not --

Mr. Walsh: Some sicko's after you.  Two of your friends are already dead.  I want you to come home.

John: Hey.  How's everybody doing?

Ron: We're alive.

Marcie: Hey, John.

John: How about you?  You ok?

Marcie: I've got a little headache and I'm nauseous, but, you know, the E.M.T. wants us to go to the hospital for some kind of lung scan.

John: Sounds like a good idea.

Marcie: No, it's not.  I've spent enough times in hospitals lately, John.  Michael saved us.  If he hadn't, the whole house probably would have blown up and we probably would have died in our sleep.

Michael: Marcie's brother, Ron -- he said that there were apparently signs of a break-in in the basement and that the gas line looked as if it had been cut.

John: Michael, you ok?

Michael: Yes.

John: You sure?

Michael: I'm fine, man.  I'm just glad I got here in time.

Officer: I'm going to go check out the basement.

John: Do that.  But, first thing, I want to see the surveillance team.  I want to know where the hell they were during all this, all right?  Do that first, all right?

Officer: Yes, sir.

John: Thanks.

Michael: I left her here, John.  I left her here all alone.  You know, I know that we're not together, but I almost lost her for good this time.

John: Ok.  Slow down.  This is not your fault, Mike.

Michael: John, I got up this morning, I got ready like any other day, and all the while Marcie's being poisoned.  Jeez, you know, if I hadn't gotten that phone call --

John: Wait, wait.  What phone call?

Michael: It was weird.  It was like Marcie, but it wasn't Marcie.  You know, she -- she was talking.  It was like a recording of a press conference or a radio address, something like that.

John: All right.  Slow down for a second, Mike.  Slow down, think about this for a second.  Did you hear any other sounds?  Did you hear the caller's voice?

Michael: No, no, the recording clicked off, and the line just went dead.

John: Ok.  You got this call on your cell phone?

Michael: Yeah.

John: You check the caller I.D.?

Michael: Yeah, John, it was blocked.  He must have been calling from a pay phone or something.  You know, I just ran over here.  When I couldn't get Marcie on the phone, I just ran over here and if I hadn't, I swear to you, John, they'd probably be dead.

John: Hey.  Hey.  You did good, man.  You did real good.  I'm thinking whoever set this up, they wanted you to get here just in time.  You know, it's like the one chapter in the book.

Michael: The "Dino" chapter.

John: Yeah, the "Dino" chapter.

Michael: Yeah.  So, this S.O.B. -- He kills Julie and Hudson, and now he's playing a game with Marcie's life?  No, John.

Michael: No.

John: Ok.  Ok.  Are you hungry?

John: Ok, I know this is difficult, but try to think back.  Did you see anyone around here last night before you went to bed?

Marcie: No.

John: You get any strange phone calls, hang-ups?

Marcie: No, nothing.

Michael: Nick Messina was here.

Marcie: Michael, please.  You still don't think that he had anything to do with this?

Michael: He was here.  John put a little heat on him and now this?  What the hell am I supposed to think, Marcie?

John: Mike, Mike, I got a couple guys on it, all right?  See, if we can go back to last night, find out what happened.

Ron: Oh, me and my father, we decided to stay over last night.

Marcie: So they went up to bed, and then I stayed up reading.

John: All right.  Around what time was that?

Marcie: I guess around midnight.

Ron: Yeah.

Marcie: I must have fallen asleep because the next thing I remember was Michael coming in, waking me up, and telling me that I had to get outside.

John: Ok.  You know, Marcie, I finished reading the book.

Marcie: And then you know about the same thing happened to the main character, Jamie.

John: Yeah.

Marcie: And her dad and her brother.  So, my book almost got us all killed, right?

Michael: Marcie, wait.

Mr. Walsh: You can't let this maniac get away with this.

John: I won't, Mr. Walsh.  With this act, the department now classifies this as acts of a serial killer.

Ron: So what are you saying, lieutenant?  This is, what, good news?

John: Gets us more funds and manpower, Ron, to catch this guy and we will.

Jen: Hey.

Marcie: Hi.

Jen: I saw the ambulance and the cop cars.  What happened?

Marcie: Someone tried to kill me last night.  My dad and my brother, too.

Jen: Oh, my God.  What happened?

Marcie: Somebody broke in and they cut a gas pipe, and there was a leak and the fumes filled the house.  We almost died.

Jen: My God.  So, the same person?

Marcie: Who killed Julie and Hudson, who's acting out the murders in my book?  Yeah.

Jen: Ok, whoever this is, they're going to get caught.  You know that, right?

Natalie: Well, I don't -- I don't know that I'm really handling it.  Just I'm creating more distractions for myself, a little personal drama.

Michael: So it doesn't bother you that Ron Walsh and Natalie are dating?

Michael: Oh, she's really freaked about these "Killing Club" murders.  She's not just scared, she's -- she's guilty, you know, like she feels like this whole thing is her fault.

Michael: But you got to admit it, John, this case is starting to get to you.  We're talking about another serial killer here.

Michael: Are you telling me this isn't personal at all?

John: It's not like it was with Caitlin.  I can handle this one.

Michael: So you're not on this thing 24/7?  Getting plenty of rest, not missing any meals?

John: Do you want this case solved or not?

Michael: John, you got a whole team of people working for you.  You got bodyguards on every potential victim.  You have to understand you can't do this whole thing yourself.

Michael: She's staying with me.  I'm sleeping on the couch.

Michael: What was I supposed to do, John?  This maniac almost killed Marcie, her father, and her brother.  I mean, if a guy like Ron Walsh can't protect her --

John: Mc Bain.  Oh, hey.  Yeah, no, I missed you, too.  No, I grabbed a couple hours of sleep here at the station.  Yeah, no, no, I -- I think I could take a break here in a little while.  Yeah.  I'll see you then.

John: Does he have an alibi for where he was during the murders?

Detective: Out of state both times.  It checks out.  He was getting autographs for his real estate clients.

John: All right, except for this one, what do you think?

Michael: Uh, well, I guess it looks ok.  Do you know where the card is?

John: I don't know.  Yeah, where's that card?

Marcie: Oh, I'm fine.  Don't worry about me.  The police have been keeping a very close eye on me.

Ron: Yeah, I just don't think you should be taking any chances, though.  It's not worth it, is it?

Marcie: Oh, I know, I know, I know.  So, what's with you?  Well, you look like you're ready to go out on the town.  You going out on a date or something.  Who's the lucky girl?

Ron: Natalie Vega.

Marcie: What?  Natalie?

Ron: What, you got a problem with that?

Marcie: Yeah, I really don't think -- it's a really bad idea, Ron.

Ron: Why?

Marcie: Because she's hung up on another guy, that's why.

Hayes: You're the one who got her so upset she ran out into the middle of the street, got hit by a car, almost died.  You're the one who's put her through so much crap that I'm flabbergasted that she hasn't had a nervous breakdown by now!  Or -- wait.  Or did she?

Riley: I miss you.

Jen: What do you want me to say, Riley?  I miss you, too.  That's not our problem.

Riley: Jen, I woke up this morning, the bed was empty without you there.  You belong there with me now.

Jen: I was there, right up until the minute  where you believed that I'm a cold-blooded killer.

Riley: I made mistakes.  I'm sorry.

Jen: So what are you saying?  Now you don't believe that I killed Paul?

Riley: I'm trying to tell you I love you, all right, and if you did do it, I'm --

Jen: No, you listen to me!  Before, Rex believed that I was guilty, but he wanted to stand by me, and you're the one who thought I was innocent, and now all of a sudden everything's reversed.  Rex is by my side, he wants to stand by me, and you want to love me right onto death row, just like your father.

Hayes: Mrs. Davidson, this is Hayes Barber.  I'm Marcie Walsh's agent.

Viki: And what can I do for you, Mr. Barber?

Hayes: I don't know if you're aware, but Hudson Prescott and Julie Tanaka's deaths were not accidents.  They were murdered by someone who's been copying the killings out of Marcie's book.

Viki: What is this all about?

Hayes: I wanted to give you and your paper permission to use excerpts from "The Killing Club" in upcoming articles related to the murders.

Viki: I see.  And you would be doing this --

Hayes: For Marcie's protection, of course.  The way I see it, the more media coverage there is, the safer she'll be.

Viki: Well, isn't that generous of you.  But, Mr. Barber, I would never do anything to impede an ongoing murder investigation.

Hayes: Unfortunately, "The Sun" and some of the other scandal sheets may not share your journalistic ethics.  This story is going to break, Mrs. Davidson.  I'd just prefer to see it break in your paper.

Viki: Uh-huh.  And why is that, because of my ethics or my paper's circulation?

Hayes: "The Killing Club" is already a bestseller, Mrs. Davidson.  I'm doing this for Marcie.  This is -- this is all about her.

Riley: Dad, where are you?

Daniel: We're coming home. Riley, I've done some things in the past that I'm not very proud of, to you and to mom.  I swore I'd never be like my father.  I never meant to hurt either one of you.  I'm sorry, son, for so many things.  I love you.

Riley: I love you, too.  Is everything ok?

Daniel: Yeah.  Yeah, it couldn't be better.  See you soon.

Riley: Bye.

Jen: So I guess you two are tight again, huh?

Riley: He's my father, Jen.

Jen: Yeah, he's the man that's trying to take my life away.  Don't you get that?  You can't love us both right now.

Officer: Found another one of your friends wandering around outside.

Michael: Go ahead.  What do you want?

Natalie: Well, there's really no easy way to say this, so I'm just going to come out and say it.  I overheard you talking to John about his feelings for me.

Michael: You what?

Natalie: You know, about dating Ron.  You said that it bothered him.  He agreed.

Michael: Oh, man.

Natalie: No, I think it's good.  I'm glad that I heard it.

Michael: Yeah, well, I'm not.  It was a private conversation between me and my brother.

Natalie: Well, it's too late.  I did hear it, and I'd like to talk to you about it.

Michael: Well, what you heard was me giving my brother a hard time.  We've been doing it since we were kids, Natalie.

Natalie: I don't believe you.

Michael: The only thing my brother admitted to was that it bothered him a little bit to see you with another guy.  That doesn't mean that he has feelings.  That doesn't mean that he's jealous.

Natalie: You know, you sound just like my mother.

Michael: Yeah, well, maybe you should listen to your mother, ok?  I'm telling you, Natalie, don't mess with John's head right now.  The poor guy is just getting his life back together, so please don't get involved, ok?

Natalie: Who says that I want to?

Michael: Natalie, would you be sitting here talking to me right now if you didn't want to hook up with my brother?  Tell me the truth.

Natalie: Truth?  Yeah, I want to be with John.  I really do.

Michael: Which is why I'm asking you to back off.  You should understand, ok?  Now, he's doing better.  He's with Evangeline, and she is good for him.

Michael: Oh, right, my mistake.  You listened in on a private conversation between me and my brother.

Natalie: No, see, I didn't listen, I overheard.

Michael: Whatever.

Natalie: Why are you trashing me?

Michael: Listen, you asked me a question, I answered it.  It's not my fault that the truth rains on your little fantasy world.

Natalie: So now I'm delusional?

Michael: Listen, Natalie, I have heard all about you, ok?  And I know that you've been through a lot.  Must have been rough for you.

Natalie: I'm touched by your compassion.

Michael: Well, what the hell do you want me to say?

Michael: Don't play dumb with me, Natalie, because I know that you're not stupid.  Now, you know that my brother has this hero complex, ok, and you, you're like kryptonite to John.

Natalie: Yeah, well, you know, I am no victim, and I sure as hell don't need a hero.

Michael: The point is he's with Evangeline right now.  John is with Evangeline.  Do you really want to step on her to get what you want?

Natalie: I just don't understand why everyone is so convinced that Evangeline's so perfect for him and I'm not.

Michael: You're missing the point.

Natalie: I mean, yeah, she looks great on the page, you know?  She's a hotshot lawyer, brains, beauty.  She came from a perfect upbringing, and I floated from mother to mother -- one mother who does everything, and one mother who does anyone.

Michael: Ok, now, I'm not even going to touch that, ok?  Look, John -- he's in a good head space right now, ok?  He's got things together.  He's got something good in his life for the first time in a long time, and I don't want you or anyone messing that up, ok?  So, just leave it alone for John's sake because you and my brother are like a train wreck just waiting to happen.

Carlotta: I was about to freshen up your soda, but you look a little nervous.

Michael: I got a lot on my mind.

Carlotta: Something happen to Natalie?  She looked a little upset when she left here.

Michael: Upset?  More like obsessed.

Carlotta: Excuse me?

Michael: Oh, nothing.  Sorry.  That -- nothing. I just got myself into a little hot water.  Got to figure out a way to get back out of it.

Evangeline: Ok.

Michael: And, you know, we were talking about, you know, this and that, and you and John came up.  She left here pretty steamed.

Evangeline: Michael, I'm not going to ask.  I don't want to know.  I don't care.  I don't care.  I appreciate you looking out for the two of us, but really, really, we're solid.  The last thing I have to worry about is Natalie and John.

Evangeline: Listen, I just lost someone in my family that was really important to me, and John is volunteering to come home with me for the funeral.

Michael: No, no.

Marcie: Oh, god, thank God.  I think I was about to hyperventilate.

Michael: Look, I'm sorry.  I didn't mean to freak you out.  It's just I knew you were in Jersey doing that book signing, and I was pretty sure you hadn't seen a copy of today's "Sun."

Marcie: No, why?  What about it?  "The Killing Club Killer"?  It says that Julie and Hudson's death -- they died because of my book.  "An inside source says the police are determined to catch the copycat serial killer before the rest of the author's friends from the love crew die"?

Michael: Have you been alone all day?

Marcie: No.  I mean, Ron was already at work by the time I woke up.  And then the police guard and I went to my book signing.  And he's really not one for small talk, though.  Why are you asking me this?

Michael: Because I know how you are.  I know that you get all worked up over things and you're going to make yourself sick.

Marcie: I do not get all worked up, Michael!  I'm fine!

Michael: You're not.  Marcie, I want you to move in with me.

Natalie: Well, the timing was bad.  Besides, I really didn't feel like hearing any more of your insults about my character.

Michael: You know, I'm sure that you are a wonderful person.

Michael: I'm just saying, you know, you never know.  We could end up being family someday.

John: You're not bothering me, all right?  It's just -- it's been one of those days, ok?  I'm sorry I yelled at you.

Marcie: No.  I can come back tomorrow, really.  It's not that important.

John: Hey, come on in.

Marcie: Ok.

John: Would you like a cup of coffee or something?

Marcie: No.

John: Marcie, you really shouldn't be looking at those.

Marcie: You know what?  I -- I keep wondering about Julie and Hudson.  You know, what was going on in their minds right before they died, if they were scared.  So, have they got any new leads or anything like that?  We got to catch them, John.  I mean, you got to catch them, because I really don't think I can handle any more innocent people being killed because of me.

Waitress: Oh, it's awesome.  Did you read there's a psycho out there who's copying all the murders?

Natalie: Yeah, that's pretty awful.

Natalie: Mm-hmm.  Well, can I get a cheeseburger, medium rare, and fries, well done?  That's it.  It's for my boss.  Well, actually, we're friends, but -- you know, quite honestly, I really don't know what we are.  This is too much information, isn't it?  I don't even know why I'm telling you this.

Michael: Yeah, neither do I.

Natalie: Get a life, Mc Bain.

Michael: Oh, hey, I'm not the one who's throwing myself at someone who's not available.

Natalie: No, no, you're much worse.  You're not doing anything to try to get Marcie back.

Michael: What's up with you, Natalie?  I already told you what John's deal is.  He's with Evangeline.  They're very happy.  So what's your deal?  You just a glutton for punishment?

Natalie: Look, I don't see a ring on Evangeline's finger, and she doesn't even have a key to his apartment.  You know, isn't that kind of weird for a guy who's so committed?

Natalie: Well, why are you so invested in John and Evangeline?

Michael: Because I know my brother, ok?  If he wanted to be with you, he would be, but he's not, ok, so face it.  He and Evangeline have hooked up.  They're getting serious.  You may not like it, you may not believe it, but that's the way it is.

Natalie: They were hooked up.  But judging from John's foul mood since he got back, I'd say there's a little trouble in paradise.

Marcie: Yeah.  Well, I really don't see how it can get much more personal with me, you know, because I'm actually the one who's giving this guy all of his ideas.  And have you seen the papers?  You know, they're not writing about me because I wrote this great book.  They're writing about me because I inspired a murderer.  And you know what the worst part of it is?  My agent, Hayes -- he thinks this is going to make the book sales -- he thinks it's going to make it skyrocket through the roof.  But I don't want to make money because -- off of Julie and Hudson's deaths.  I don't -- I don't know what I'm supposed to do anymore.

John: You know what you got to do, Marcie?  I mean, for starters, you can't do this.  You do this and you'll drive yourself nuts.

Marcie: Well, guess what -- it's too late for that, really.

John: You are not responsible for this lunatic and what he is doing.  And somehow you got to figure out a way to let it go.

Marcie: How? J ohn, could you?  I mean, if you were me?

John: Probably not.

Marcie: You got to let me help you.  Please?

John: Ok.

Marcie: Ok?

John: Hmm.

Marcie: Ok.  All right.  Well, so far, we know the killer has used the fire, right, and the car accident.

John: Right.

Marcie: But then, here, in chapter 18, page --

John: Slow down.

Marcie: Oh, ok -- chapter 18, page 211, we know that the victim gets boiled in oil, right?  But then here in chapter 12, page 152 -- well, this is where they use the crossbow to kill the victim.

John: I've done my research.

Marcie: Oh.  Well, so what I was thinking -- what I was thinking was, you know, maybe we could call all the sports stores and maybe the online stores and see if anybody's bought a crossbow since the book came out.

John: We're already on it.

Marcie: Oh.  Well, that's really all the ideas I had.

John: It was a good idea.

Marcie: Yeah.

John: Hopefully, it's going to pan out.

Marcie: I hope so.  You know, I was thinking maybe -- can I call you if I get any more ideas?

John: Absolutely.

Marcie: Yeah?

John: Do me a favor?

Marcie: Sure.

John: Go home and get some rest.

Marcie: I wish I could rest.  I just keep having the nightmares, you know, all these things just running through my mind.

John: I wish I could say something important that would comfort you somehow.  But all I can tell you is we'll do everything we can to catch this guy.

Marcie: I know you will.

Michael: Why would John be in a bad mood after meeting Evangeline's family?

Natalie: Well, I mean, maybe this was just too big of a step for John.  You know, I really don't seem him as the boyfriend type, making all nice with the aunts and uncles.

Michael: You have no idea what went on when they were gone.

Natalie: I know it wasn't good.

Marcie: Hey! Hi, guys . What's going on?

Michael: Oh, nothing.  I was just waiting for a cup of coffee.

Natalie: Just waiting for my takeout.

Marcie: Well, then, don't let me interrupt.

Michael: No, no, listen, you're not interrupting anything.  Please stay.  I could use the company.

Waitress: Hey, your burger's up.

Natalie: Oh, thank you.  Well, guys, sorry, but I got to get back to the station so I can give John his dinner.

Marcie: So, what's really going on with you and Natalie?  You know, it's kind of obvious.  So what are you hiding from me, Michael?

Marcie: You know -- you know, you can tell me, Michael.  You know, if you're seeing Natalie, then --

Michael: What?

Marcie: Well, it's ok, really, you know, because I'm fine with it.  You know, if you -- we're broken up, so you can date whoever you want, you know --

Michael: I'm not dating Natalie.

Marcie: You're not?

Michael: No.

Marcie: Well, so what are you hiding from me, Michael?  I don't understand.  Never mind.  Never mind.  Never mind, because you know what?  It's none of my business, and I should never ask you anything like that.

Michael: You know what?  You know what?  You know what?  It's not that big a deal, ok?  It's just -- this is kind of a long story.

Marcie: Well, I got nothing but time lately, so I'm all ears.

Michael: Well, it's about John.

Marcie: And, well, I guess Natalie?

Michael: Yeah.  Apparently, she never got over him.

Marcie: And now she wants him back, right?

Michael: Right.

Marcie: And she's just going to get her heart broken all over again.

Michael: Yeah, yeah, that's what I keep telling her, but she doesn't want to listen to me, you know?  I don't think that john needs the drama in his life any more than she does.

Marcie: No, he doesn't, I know that, because I just came from his office.  You know, I thought -- I thought that since I wrote the book, right, that I could go there and that I could help him find the killer, but all I did was become this huge emotional mess in front of him, and everything that I suggested he had already done.

Michael: Well, he is the chief of detectives, Marcie.

Marcie: Yes, I know that.  I know that, Michael and I'm sorry that I ever wrote the book, and I just -- I wish that I never even created "The Killing Club."

Michael: Ok, ok, ok.  Well, hey, listen, here's an idea.

Marcie: Yes.

Michael: Instead of being upset -- yeah -- and guilty --

Marcie: Yeah.

Michael: Why don't we try and do something right?

Marcie: What do you mean, "right"?

Michael: Well, we used to be a pretty good team, me and you, remember?

Marcie: Yeah.

Michael: Yeah, so why don't we try and help, huh, you know?  If we try, maybe we can stop this maniac before he kills anybody else.

Marcie: I keep hoping and praying that he's not.

Michael: I know.  But I got to say, Marcie, I --

Marcie: I know, I know. I can feel it in my gut.  There are more murders left to go.

John: "Every great detective needs a great cheeseburger once in a while.  Natalie."

John: That's a cheeseburger, all right.

[Knock on door]

John: Come on in.  Hey, Mike.

Michael: Oh, I see you got Natalie's takeout.

John: How'd you know it's from Natalie?

Michael: I saw her at the diner.

John: I didn't realize how hungry I was.  It was nice of her.

Michael: Yeah.  I'm not so sure.

John: What the hell is that supposed to mean?

Michael: It means I think that Natalie has ulterior motives, bro.

John: "Ulterior motives"?  It's a burger, Mike.

Michael: It's a hell of a lot more than that, brother.

John: Ok.  It's fries, too.

Michael: John, Natalie is in love with you.

John: You see, Mike, sometimes a burger is just a burger.

Michael: Yeah.  Well, that is bait on the hook.  Ok, buddy?  And Natalie's got her hands on the pole.

John: We're still talking talking about fishing, right?  She knows where we stand.

Michael: John, she's crazy about you.  She told me herself and from that poker face, I can see that this ain't news to you.

John: You want news?  What's news is that she's talking to you in the first place.  What have you been saying to her?

Michael: Right.  Turn it into an interrogation.  Put it back on me.

John: Look, I don't want you getting mixed up in this and screwing things up.

Michael: Yeah, because you're screwing them up just fine yourself.  John, Natalie thinks that she's got a chance with you.  And you've been giving her plenty of reasons to feel that way.

John: You know, I love these little visits we have.  I'm not leading Natalie on, end of discussion.

Michael: Oh.  What should I do, John?  Should I go to my room now?

John: I don't care where you go, Mike.  Why would Natalie be talking to you, anyway?

Michael: Ok, look, that's not the point, John.

John: It is the point.  What have you been saying to her?

Michael: I told her that you and Evangeline are together and that she'd be crazy to get in the middle of that.

John: Oh, that was just brilliant.  You challenge her?  You challenge Natalie?  Why didn't you just give her an invitation?

Michael: I didn't challenge Natalie, ok?  I covered your butt.  And she told me that you've been staring at her and finding reasons to be around her.  Now, it's not my fault that she overhears the stupid things that come out of your mouth.

John: What exactly did she overhear?

Michael: Look, you came back from your trip with Evangeline all bummed out about the way that it went down.  Now, if Natalie's bringing you loaded burgers -- I mean, you're the detective, man.  Put it together.  Ok.  Change the subject.  How was your trip with Evangeline?

John: That's your idea of changing the subject?

Michael: Hmm.  Not great, huh?  The trip?

John: You know, I met the family.

Michael: Yeah.  I've been there.

John: I don't know, Mike, you know.  I always knew that Evangeline had it all together, but, you know, the family, man -- they have big dreams for her, expectations, and I don't exactly fit the profile.

Michael: What are you saying, John?  You saying you're going to dump Evangeline?

John: What, are you crazy?  Nobody's dumping nobody.  I just don't want to be the guy that's holding her back.

Michael: Good.  So what's the problem?

John: I'm holding her back.

Michael: How?  John, something happen with her family?

John: It's part of it.

Michael: Mm-hmm.

John: Look, I see her mom's place, right, and she's got all these trophies and awards and certificates.  They're all over the place.

Michael: John, you always knew she was smart.

John: It's more than that, Mike.

Michael: Ok.  All right.  So she didn't grow up the way we did.

John: You had to have been there.  You know, everybody I met -- the ex-boyfriends, the crazy cousins -- they all have these big expectations for her.  It's what's been driving her all these years.

Michael: Yeah.  I know where you're going with this, John.  You and me -- we both have this second-class-citizen thing going on, you know?  I feel it all the time when I'm around the other doctors, all the time, John.  So what?  So she does more for your resume than you do for hers.  Big deal.

John: So I can't be bugged by that?

Michael: What are you saying?  You think someone like Natalie would be a better fit?

John: No, I didn't say that.  But it might explain why --

Michael: Why what?

John: Why she's been on my mind.

Michael: Care for a little cheap psychology?

John: Is there any other kind?

Michael: You're trying to be noble by trashing what you have with Evangeline because you think that's what's best for her.  Or maybe Natalie's just hot.  Either way, John, you have to deal with this thing with Natalie before you screw up everything.

John: I'll talk to her.  Will that satisfy you, Dr. Freud?  Is there anything else I need to know about this little chat you had with her?

Michael: Nope.  I didn't say anything else.  And from here on out, I am out of it.

John: Good.  Keep it that way.

Michael: I'm just looking out for you, bro.  That's all I care about.

[Pager beeps]

John: You can't even say that with a straight face.

Michael: It's the hospital.  You mind if I use your phone?

John: Go right ahead.  Look, don't touch anything else on my desk, nothing.

Michael: Not even your burger?

John: Not my burger.

Michael: Oh, ok.  Well, you know, for what it's worth, my vote's with Evangeline.

John: That's you staying out of it?

Michael: When are you going to learn to keep your big mouth shut, stupid?

Michael: Ok.  I'm on my way.

Evangeline: Michael, what a surprise.  Where's John?

Michael: He's -- he's out.

Evangeline: Oh, he's on a case?

Michael: I -- I have to go.  The hospital just called me, and I really have to -- go.  You really need to talk to John.

Evangeline: I do?  About what?

Michael: Listen, this is really none of my business, but you're great for my brother.  I mean, like, completely-turn-his-life-around great.

Evangeline: Thanks.  What is going on, Michael?

Michael: Just talk to john, ok? I really can't say anything else.

Evangeline: What are you talking about?

Michael: I'm sorry.  Talk to him.

Michael: Where am I needed?

Nurse: Little girl in three.  Smoke inhalation.

Michael: I'm on it.

Doctor: Hey.  Welcome back.  Can you tell me your name and the year?

Jessica: It's Jessica -- Jessica Buchanan.  It's 2005.  Where -- where am I?

Doctor: The Llanview hospital.  You've got a mild concussion.  Can you move your feet?  Good.

Antonio: Doctor, you mind if I talk to her a minute?

Doctor: Yeah.  Don't make it long.

Jessica: Antonio, Jamie -- where is she?  She was in the fire!  Did you get her out?

Antonio: Jess, she's fine.  We got her out in time.

R.J.: Jamie -- my granddaughter is here!  Where is she?

Nurse: The doctor's examining her.  You can see her momentarily.

Antonio: I need to know -- I need to know what happen in R.J.'s apartment.  How did the fire get started?

Natalie: Mc Bain.

Michael: Oh -- what the hell did you do that for?

Natalie: Why the hell did you tell John how I felt about him?

Michael: Because I -- I thought that that's what you wanted.

Natalie: Not like that!  My God, I made such a fool of myself.  You know, I told him things.  I told him that that's exactly what he wanted and that -- and then he told me that I was crazy.  Do you have any idea how humiliating that is for me?

Michael: You know, you should forget John.  Just walk away.

Natalie: And how am I supposed to do that?

Michael: I don't know.  You got to figure it out, though.  Unless, of course, you like making a fool out of yourself.

Natalie: Oh, thanks.

Michael: I know what it's like to love somebody that you can't be with.

Natalie: You mean Marcie?  Yeah, but you know what?  You guys are different, you know?  You gave it a shot.  It didn't work out.  But, at least you tried.

Michael: Hmm. I'm not done trying.

Natalie: Then you're exactly like me.

Michael: Not exactly.  I mean, Marcie isn't practically living with somebody else.

Natalie: Oh, God, save me the whole pro-Evangeline speech, ok?  I know that you think that she's right for John, but I have to disagree.

Michael: What does John think?  Let him go, Natalie.

Natalie: You're starting to swell up.

Michael: Well, you got one hell of a right hook, kid.

Natalie: Come on, let's go to Carlotta's.  We'll get you some ice.

Natalie: I am really sorry that I hit you.

Michael: Well, I probably deserved it.  You know, I know better than to go messing around in other people's love lives, especially when mine is such a train wreck.

Natalie: You know, you were right about one thing. John gets to be with Evangeline, and I get you.

Michael: Yeah, well, I'm just as thrilled as you are, ok?

Natalie: Yeah.
