Marcie & Michael Breakup Scene at the Diner (December 29, 2004)
1/10/05

Scene 1:

Michael and Jen are sitting in the corner booth at the Angel Square diner. Jen is in the seat facing the door. The waitress sets down two cups of coffee, then leaves.

Michael: So what’s the real reason you wanted to meet me, Jen?

Jen: Sympathy breakfast doesn’t cut it?

Michael: Maybe. I’m just not used to people being sympathetic towards me.

Jen: I don’t understand, Michael. You and Marcie were so good together.

Michael: That’s just it. We were good together. We were never going to be great together. Marcie and Michael were never going to be Marcie and Al, not the way we were going.

Jen: Marcie didn’t expect you to be Al.

Michael: You have no idea.

Jen: Marcie… (Sees Marcie enter the diner). Marcie!

Marcie goes to the table, not realizing at first who is sitting with Jen since his back is to her.

Marcie: Hi, Jen! Why did you want me to meet you… oh. Never mind. I get it. It’s a set up. (Turns to walk away. Jen quickly slides out of the booth and stops her).

Jen: Marcie, wait. Please, you and Michael had so much going for you. You have to talk to him. You can’t just leave things the way they are.

Michael: She’s right, Marcie. We do have some things to talk about.

Jen: Come on, Marcie. You can’t just give up on love. Riley didn’t give up on me.

Marcie: (Sighs) Fine, I’ll stay.

Jen grabs her coat.

Jen: Good. Sit. Talk. Eat. I’ll see you later. (She hugs Marcie, then leaves. Marcie takes off her coat, then slowly slides into the booth across from Michael.)

Marcie: So, you don’t think you said enough at the police station?

Michael: I said a lot of things.

Marcie: You weren’t wrong, though, Michael. I couldn’t sleep last night. I kept tossing and turning and thinking about what you said and you were right. I never did get over Al.

Michael: It’s ironic.

Marcie: What is?

Michael: I couldn’t sleep last night either. I wanted to call you. I wanted to apologize and ask you to forgive me. I kept telling myself I was just angry, that I was wrong about Al.

Marcie: So why didn’t you call?

Michael: I decided to sort through a box of stuff I threw together when I moved out of Jen’s house and back into the hotel. Apparently, some of our papers got mixed together when I was living there.

Marcie: What papers?

Michael: I read the story, Marcie.

Marcie: What story?

Michael: The story you wrote about us.

Marcie: Oh, my God. I forgot about that. Michael, I’m sorry.

Michael: Don’t be sorry, Marcie. At least I know I’m not imagining things. When we first got together I’d get jealous of Al. I always pretended I wasn’t but I was. I could feel him between us but I told myself it was me, my insecurities.

Marcie: Michael…

Michael: Let me speak, Marcie. I read your story. It wasn’t me. It was never me.

Marcie: It was just a story, Michael. It had nothing to do with us, nothing to do with reality.

Michael: You put Al’s soul in my body, Marcie! You took everything that was good in me and attributed it to Al! How am I supposed to feel about that?

Marcie: It was just a fantasy Michael! It was my way of dealing with things. I didn’t understand why you wanted to be with me. I felt guilty about wanting to be with you. It was so soon after Al died…

Michael: That the only way you could love me was to pretend he was inside me. That way you wouldn’t have to give him up. Everything good about me was Al and every stupid, jerky thing I did or said was Michael. I get it, Marcie.

Marcie: I’m sorry, Michael. I never meant for you to read that. It was just something… just an exercise… just…

Michael: Stop trying to explain, Marcie. I’m not stupid. I thought maybe we could work things out, but I was wrong. You don’t love me. That’s all there is to it.

Marcie: Don’t say that, Michael. I do love you, just… just…

Michael: Just not like you loved Al.

Marcie: No.

Michael: Then there’s nothing left to say.

Marcie: Michael, please…

Michael: No. I may not be Al Holden, but in my own awkward, occasionally jerky way, I loved you Marcie. I’ve never said that to any woman before. Ever. All I wanted was for you to love me back. But I can’t make you feel something you don’t, and I’m through trying.

Marcie grabs her coat and runs out of the diner, fighting back tears.

Scene 2:

Marcie sitting in Angel Square, at the base of the statue. She is crying. The wind blows, and some leaves drift past her feet. Marcie watches them, then a look of recognition crosses her face.

Marcie: You’re here, aren’t you?

Al: (moving out from behind the statue) How’s my girl?

Marcie: I’d be better if you were really here.

Al: I’m always here.

Marcie: Why did you stop coming to me?

Al: I had to. It was getting harder and harder for me to leave each time. But my place isn’t in that world anymore.

Marcie: I miss you so much.

Al: I know you do, sweetie.

Marcie laughs ruefully. Marcie: Michael used to call me that too. Sweetie.

Al: That’s because it fits you.

Marcie: Al, I’m so lost. I don’t know what to do.

Al: Marcie, you know what to do, you just don’t want to do it.

Marcie: I tried to apologize, Al, but he won’t listen to me. I wrote this story…

Al: I know about the story.

Marcie: You do?

Al: Yes. You’re an amazing writer.

Marcie: You think so?

Al: I know so. I loved that you wrote us a daughter. A beautiful little redhead like her mother.

Marcie: It’s what you wrote in the photo album. Al and Marcie after the birth of their first child… You wanted us to have a little girl.

Al: I wanted a lot of things for us, Marcie. It was sweet of you to call her Gabrielle, by the way.

Marcie: It was horrible what happened to your mother.

Al: She’s okay now, though. She’s with me and she’s at peace.

Marcie: I envy her.

Al: Don’t say that.

Marcie: It’s true, Al! I want to be with you and I want to feel at peace. I’ve made a total mess of my life since you’ve been gone. I nearly flunked out of college, I got myself in debt up to my eyeballs, I got fired from the police department, and I drove a way a decent, caring man. It’s too much!

Al: Then take things one at a time. Starting with Michael.

Marcie: Michael doesn’t even want to speak to me.

Al: Then start with me.

Marcie: What do you mean?

Al: You know what I mean, Marcie. I told you, you already know what you have to do, you just don’t want to do it. You have to let go.

Marcie: I can’t.

Al: You have to, Marcie. It’s not fair to you, it’s not fair to Michael and it’s not fair to me.

Marcie: How is it not fair to you?

Al: Marcie, what we had was unique. It was special. It was the best part of my life. You can’t try to recreate that with someone else. You need to let that stay ours. Michael is a different person, and your relationship with him, your love for him, is different, too. It has to be. It’s between the two of you.

Marcie: I don’t know if I’m ready.

Al: It’s long past time.

Marcie: But if I let go, I’ll lose you forever.

Al: No you won’t. All you’ll lose is the pain. Marcie, on this side it’s all about the love. But I can’t feel it from you.

Marcie: You think I don’t love you?

Al: That’s not what I said. I said I can’t feel it. Right now all I feel is your pain.

Marcie: Maybe that’s all I have.

Al: No, that’s not all. You’re full of love, but the pain is bigger. It overshadows everything and if you don’t let it go it will destroy you. And if that happens, I’ll never be at peace.

Marcie: Don’t say that.

Al: It’s true.

Marcie: If I let go you’ll disappear.

Al: No, I won’t. If you let go, you’ll finally be able to remember me without tears. You’ll be able to feel the love and so will I. When you can remember the joy, that’s when you’ll be able to carry me in your heart and not be weighted down. Please, Marcie. Please let me find my peace. Do this for me.

Marcie: How?

Al: Only you know that.

Marcie: You promise you won’t disappear?

Al: I promise.

Marcie: Will I still be able to see you like this?

Al: No, not for a long time. But you’ll know I’m with you.

Marcie: I love you, Al.

Al: I love you too.

The wind blows the leaves around again as Marcie sits alone at the base of the statue.

Marcie & Michael Breakup at the Police Station
(December 28, 2004)
1/11/05

My take to begins right after Marcie gets fired and finishes talking with Hayes on the phone just as Michael comes in.....

“Who was that on the phone?” Michael asks from behind Marcie.
“Oh, that was um, my agent, Hayes.” Marcie reply’s through her tears nervously.
“Your borrowing money from him now?” Michael goes on to ask as Marcie turns her attention back to her desk guiltily.
“Michael, I just got fired, okay. I called Hayes to tell him about it and he said that he would lend me a little bit of money.” Marcie explains shortly standing to begin packing her things as Michael sits beside the desk.
“Well, why didn’t you ask me?” Michael asks.
“Do you know how far in debt I am? You don’t have that kind of money.” Marcie replies.
“Well I don’t think that you should take a loan from this guy.” Michael argues.
        “Why not?” Marcie cries.
“Because you will feel obligated to him and then you will do anything he says even if it puts you in the hospital.” Michael reminds her.
“No, it wasn’t his fault, I was the one who went a little overboard with the exercising.” Marcie argued quickly.
        “A little?” Michael cries sarcastically.
“He felt really bad about it.” Marcie says defensively.
“Do you really think that this guy gives a damn about you?” Michael yells springing to his feet as he speaks. “You are a commodity to this guy. A way for him to make money!”
“No- no-okay, he- he is just trying to help us both make money. Why are you always so negative?”
Marcie cries as she rushes over to get her coat.
“Because I care.” Michael reply’s in frustration as Marcie rushes back over to wave her finger in his face.
“You know, the way that you have been acting lately Michael-.” Marcie begins only to have Michael cut in.
“Sometimes, I don’t even know what we’re doing together.” Michael mumbles.
“Michael, I love you.” Marcie says her tone changing instantly.
“No. You tried to love me. You tried to love me the way that you loved Al so that you could replace him with me. It just isn’t working, is it?” Michael explains with feeling as Marcie look’s up at him.....

.....Marcie turn’s her back to Michael moving to press her hand against the wall as she stare’s at it with tear’s in her eye’s.....
“Marcie, I think we’re starting to realized that I’m not the substitute that you thought I was going to be.” Michael whispers as he move’s to stand behind her.
“Why are you making this about Al?” Marcie asks turning to face Michael.
“Because it is. He was the one. He was the love of your life Marcie. I am never going to be able to measure up to that.” Michael explains.
“I’m not asking you to measure up to that.” Marcie argues quickly.
“Maybe not in so many word’s but look at us Marcie, the crack’s have been showing for a while. It’s just that you don’t want to admit it so every chance you get, you push me away.” Michael says hoarsely.
“No, No I haven’t.” Marcie whispers.
“Yes, Marcie-.” Michael argues reaching out to grab her arm’s as she reaches for him. “- it’s not good for me, it’s not good for you, it’s not good for either one of us. And somebody is going to have to put a stop to this.”
“Michael, just- let’s just talk about things okay? Let’s just-.” Marcie begins weakly.
“And it’s going to have to be me.” Michael whispers in a thick voice hesitating for just a moment before speaking again. “Goodbye Marcie.” Michael says softly leaning in to give her a parting kiss only to have her turn away quickly.......

“Hold the freaking phone!” Luna cries rushing into the room as everyone freezes in place. Quickly she move’s to stand between Marcie and Michael staring at their faces in horror. “Somebody’s got some explaining to do right now!”
“Luna, get a grip woman, they can hear you all of the way up in cupid lane!” Megan cried popping in to stand beside Luna with a frustrated sigh.
“Do you see this Megan, huh? Do you see this mess?” Luna cried in return waving her hand towards the frozen couple in shock. “What is going on with these two?”
“Growing pain’s Luna, you know that all human’s go through those as long as they are on this earth.” Megan reminded her with a smile.
“But this part was settled on Valentine’s almost a year ago.” Luna shot back angrily.
“Are you sure about that?” Megan asked with a lifted brow.
“Well yeah, I mean, they found each other and the love, Al became Michael and they were giddy with happiness.” Luna mumbled suddenly doubtful as she turns her gaze back to the couple.
“Luna, thing’s are never quite what they seem, you should know that better than anyone. Do you remember what Al had to do to get Marcie to accept him as Michael?” Megan prodded gently.
“He- well he- .” Luna whispered her eye’s suddenly going wide. “Oh my goddess. He used Al to force her to accept Michael.”
“And I quote.... ‘If you can’t do it for him and you can’t do it for yourself, then do it for me.’....or something like that.” Megan said with a soft smile.
“It was never about Michael or Marcie...” Luna began softly.
“It was always about Al, at least subconsciously.” Megan inserted. “And that would never work because Al’s not there. It’s now Michael’s soul, the soul that Al gave to be with Marcie.”
“Well, how do we fix it?” Luna asked stubbornly.
“We don’t. It’s not our place to fix anything. It’s all up to them now.” Megan ordered tightly.
“But- but-.” Luna cried with wide eyes.
“Marcie has to learn to let Al go and find her way back to him as Michael. She has to find the love for who he is now, not who he was. She has to figure out that it’s about Michael and Marcie, not Al.” Megan went on to say as everyone began to move once more. Sadly, Luna watched on as Michael stared down at Marcie, biting his lip as he desperately tried to control his emotion, and then turned to walk away. Slowly Marcie moved to press her forehead against the wall as she gives into the tear’s of sorrow........
