Marcie's Reaction to Jen's Death (MAY 2005)

I see that I am not the only one who felt that Marcie was given short shrift in today's episode. So, it's time for a TAKE TWO. I personally am cutting Natalie's scene at the garage weeping in John's arms *gag* and devoting the time to Marcie. I'd like anyone who cares to do so to add their version of events in this thread. You can do the entire episode (Marcie's parts at least) or just one scene from today. --SophieSoaps

My Take Two! is the end scene with the makeshift memorial where Marcie wants to say a prayer. I'm giving her time alone with her best friend instead.

Michael: Marcie, you need to go home and get some rest.

Marcie: No, no I can't leave just yet.

Nick: Marcie, Michael's right. You have to take care of yourself. You know Jen wouldn't want anything to happen to you because of her.

Michael: Come on. Let me take you home.

Marcie: Okay. You're right. But I just need a minute alone with Jen. I just need to talk to her one more time.

Michael: Okay, Sweetie. I'll wait for you over there.

Mark: Listen, I'll call you in the morning.

Nick: Take care of yourself, okay?

Marcie: Thanks, guys.

Mark and Nick hug Marcie and leave. Michael waits in the background.

Marcie presses her head against the wall and runs her fingers over Jen's picture.

Marcie: I don't understand this, Jen. I don't understand why you did this! You could have talked to me. I would have listened. I could have helped you, Jen. The way you helped me so many times. Like when you wore a wire to catch those sorority bitches who hazed me. Like when you asked me to stay with you after Al... after Al... oh, Jen! Maybe he's with you now, Al. I know he'll take care of you. Maybe your dad's there... and your babies... and Julie and Hudson... I have to believe you're surrounded by people who cared about you. I'll try to be there for your mom, I promise. She's going to miss you so much. I miss you already. You were more than my best friend... I always wanted a sister, and you were it. I thought you knew that. I thought you knew how important you were to so many people. Whatever you were looking for, Jennifer, I hope you found it.

Marcie breaks down crying. Michael goes to her and puts his arms around her. Marcie's knees buckle under the weight of her grief and she slowly sinks to the floor, Michael right along with her.

Here's my take, its also right after the prayer. Everyone leaves Marcie alone. She touches Jen's picture, tears streaming down her face. A hand touches her shoulder, she spins around. It's Rex.

Rex: Marcie.

Marcie: (sighs) Rex.

Rex: I heard what you said.

Marcie: (stares at the ground) Oh...well, you know we've never really gotten along--

Rex: Not that part. About me loving Jen. In my own way. You know...I really did love her.

Marcie: I think I've always known, Rex. (she turns around and looks at Jen's picture). And I think there was always a place in Jen's heart for you. (tears fall freely now). I can't believe she's gone. What am I going to do without my best friend?

Rex: What am I going to do without my girl? That's how I always thought of her...even when she was with Joey. And Riley. She is--was...the only woman I ever loved.

Marcie turns and faces him.

Rex: You know, I think I finally get it. I get...I understand how you felt. When Al died. (he takes a deep breath, swallowing the tears). How do you get through something like this? How did you get through it?

Marcie: (looking back at Jen) I haven't.

Rex stands behind Marcie for a moment, then tentatively puts his arm around her shoulder. Marcie leans against him and they stand in silence as the camera pans away, then fades to black.

I'm going to back the scene up a little bit to before where Marcie was at Ultra Violet.
___________________

Marcie's is at the cabin with Nick, and they are preparing to leave for Ultra Violet. Jen was to meet them there after her meal with Lindsay.

MARCIE: (Grabbing her cell phone) Are we going? Jen's probably waiting there for us by now.

NICK: (A solemn look on his face, placing his phone back on the hook) Not yet.

MARCIE: Why not? Who was just on the phone? Nick.

NICK: We... have to wait. That was... that was Michael. I think we should wait for him.

MARCIE: (knowing right away that something wasn't right) What? What is it? Nick. What did he tell you?

NICK: That we need to wait for him Marcie. OK... why don't you just sit down....

MARCIE: (panicking) No. No I don't want to sit down. I don't want to sit down. Something's wrong. What's wrong, Nick? What did Michael tell you?

NICK: (gently taking her arms and easing her to sit) He didn't tell me much. He wanted me to stay with you until he got here.

MARCIE: I have to call Jen. I have to call Jen and tell her....

MICHAEL: (standing in the door way) Sweetie. (his face is drawn and seems aged) We need to talk.

MARCIE: Nick wouldn't let me leave....

MICHAEL: I called.... asked him to stay with you. (Marcie's eyes widen and she trembles) Sweetie... it's about Jen...

MARCIE: We're going to meet her. At Ultra Violet... me and Nick... (She sees Michael's face as unchanging) Something happened to her? Michael.... Oh my God, did something happen to Jen?

MICHAEL: Sweetie...

MARCIE: Oh my God. (sobbing) Oh my God, don't say it. Don't say it Michael. Don't tell me that she's....

MICHAEL: (sits beside her taking her hands) I'm so sorry, sweetie. Jen... Rex found her... in her car... in the gallery lot. (Marcie shakes her head) She um.... she connected a hose... to the exhaust and....

Marcie: No.

MICHAEL: Jen killed herself, Marcie. She's dead.

MARCIE: No. (shaking, gets to her feet) No. Jen wouldn't... Jen wouldn't do this, she wouldn't do this Michael.

MICHAEL: Marcie....

MARCIE: (looks at Nick and then at Michael) I know Jen. I know Jen, she's my best friend. She would have come to me. She would have come to me Michael. I know she would have. She.... she told me everything. She would have told me this. She would have told me.

MICHAEL: Maybe it was... maybe it was stress. Maybe it all came to a boil too fast and...

MARCIE: Jen didn't kill herself! (crying) She wouldn't even kill a cockroach at The Onion. She didn't kill Paul Cramer and she would never take her own life. SHe wouldn't, Michael! (a beat) I have to... I have to see her. I have to go.

(Michael and Nick follow Marcie as she hurries from the cottage)
----------

(At the parking structure. Marcie begins to say a prayer for Jen. Nick, Mark and Michael stand with her. As she comes to the end of the payer, Marcie (not Mark), breaks the circle and takes off)

(Marcie sits in the stairwell, unable to look at the place where Jen died.)

REX: (sits next to her) I don't.... Jen she umm..

MARCIE: She wouldn't do this. Rex, she wouldn't do this. Jen wouldn't kill herself. (a beat) Did you have... any idea. Did you know that she would...

REX: She didn't. She didn't do this. She was so close.... so close to being cleared of everything. I was going to do that. I was gonna clear her name I was gonna... (crying) and I still am. I still am, Marcie. I'm gonna prove that Jen didn't kill Cramer. I won't let her get buried a murderer. I'm gonna prove that she was innocent. I'm gonna do it Marcie. I'm gonna prove that that same animal that killed Paul... murdered Jen.

MARCIE: She was probably scared. She was probably so scared. (sobbing) Why would someone kill Jen. Rex....

REX: It was the same guy. I know it was and Jen... she knew who he was. She knew who it was who killed Paul, who was trying to frame her and... he couldn’t let that happen. He couldn't let her spill on who he was so...

MARCIE: He killed her.

REX: He killed her. I loved her and he killed her. And when I find him... (wipes his eyes) I have to find him.

MARCIE: I want to help you. Please.... Rex I need to help you find out who did this to Jen. She was my best friend. Please. Please let me help you. I knew Jen... I know everything about her. Please.

(Rex takes a deep breath, trying to pull himself together and then pulls out some papers from his pocket. He'll bring Marcie up to speed.)

"Sweetie...Jen...it all got too much for her and she.." Michael choked out the words that sent Marcie's heart dropping to the floor. She crumpled right there as she heard. Mark and Nick stepped away to give Michael and Marcie time alone. "I don't know how she can get through all this," Mark said softly as they stood apart.

"Us, we can't let another one of our friends...we can't let anyone else die," Nick choked out passed the lump in his throat. "It's got to stop, all this death..."

Mark gave one last glance at Marcie in Michael's arms. "Let's get out of here.." Nick followed him out.

"Michael…oh god. She never would have killed herself. I do not believe she did," Marcie’s tears flowed unencumbered down her cheeks, and he wiped them gently holding her in his arms.

"Marcie…try and remember the good times with Jen, try and think of her happy."

"that's just it…she wasn't happy to often, and I should have been there more for her.." she turned away. "I...god."

She walked away from him a little, shaking with sobs. "I have to go...somewhere..."

Marcie sat in angel square. She really didn't want to turn Michael away, but she needed to talk to some people. She sighed. "Al...you and Jen, you had your differences, but I know you came to care about each other again, and...please look after Jen. I know you and your mom, and Jen's babies, and her dad are waiting on her and..." she choked out the words. "she needs you all now. I believe life goes on, even after we die, so I think that you are safe in the arms of the people who love you, Jen, and one day I know I'll see you again." she swallowed. "I just wish I could have told you when you were here what you meant to me, how you helped me.." she was shaking as Michael approached but stood back slightly letting her talk.

"I think at first you were using me, but you were just the girl I wanted to be, but knew I never could, pretty, thin, popular, but I never saw down beyond all that for a long time, but when I did I realized there was so much more to you, and then I knew that even with all your beauty, your surface was just the start of you. I saw you change...change from a selfish girl into a real woman, and I realized how important you were to me, and how what's on the surface is never the important thing...you and Al taught me that. I thought because you were popular, beautiful you'd be happy, but so much of your life was lonely and difficult." Marcie let her tears fall, unashamed." Michael stepped up, encircled her with his arms, and she held on.

"I love you Jen, and I know one day I will be able to tell you again, to let you know that you'll always be my best friend, but until then...hold those babies, and be with your father and Al...I'll never, ever forget you Jen." He rocked her slightly. "Michael...I know she didn't kill herself."

Michael nodded. "We’ll prove that," he promised her. "I will help you prove that."

This is actually going to be part of a longer piece that will deal with Marcie and her grief, since the show can't seem to get it right.

Takes place after Rex ends his call with Bo.

________________________________

“Hello?”

“Marcie…”

“Rex? What do you want? I haven’t seen Jen today, and I am sure that even if I knew where she was I wouldn’t be telling you.”

“Marcie…it’s…Jen…”

“What Rex. Just spit it out. I am late meeting Michael and his mother for dinner. Tell me what is going on, because you are starting to scare me a little. Did something happen to her?”

“She’s gone Marcie. She’s left me.”

“Good, that was the smartest thing that she could have done. You are no good for her. You’re like poison, and I am glad that she wised up and got away from you. But wait, why are you calling me? You know that I would be on her side. There’s more to the story, isn’t there? Was she about to be arrested? Does her mother know about this?”

“No, Marcie, stop babbling and listen to me. She’s gone. Do you hear me, gone. Jen is gone.” Sobs could be heard over the line and Marcie froze. His words and their meaning finally penetrating her brain.

“Stop this Rex. It isn’t funny. She had a guard with her at all times. There is no way that the killer could have got to her. Why are you saying this? It’s not true.” Marcie screamed into the phone as the tears poured from her eyes.

“It wasn’t like that. She…Marcie… she took her own life. I…I f.f.found her in the garage at the gallery. I tried to…” his voice trailed off again.

Marcie was rooted to the spot, the phone gripped tightly in her hand. Her best friend, the one last person she had left in the world was gone. She could hear Rex sobbing over the phone, but she didn’t care. Her world was crumbling and there was no way to stop it.

Marcie tried to open the door but her hand shook to much Michael slowly grabbed her and kissed it then took the key. Marcie looked around the room of the Love Center House it was very quite and dark. Michael turned on the light.

Marcie: It's so quite she walked into the living room and looked around. Tears came to her as she remembered their time in this room laughing, talking, crying. This is all my fault.

Michael walked into the room and put his arms around her.

Michael: No baby it isn’t.

 Marcie pulled away

Marcie: Yes it is. If it wasn’t for the book she would still be here.

Michael put his hand before she could say anything else

Michael: Not another word. You listen to me, Marcie Walsh, you had no idea the some odd ball would use your book to kill people and it's not you fault. Jen case is different.

Marcie: How? How can it be different she's dead too.

Michael: Marcie, baby, Jen wasn't killed by the odd ball.

Marcie: Yeah but she is still dead and its all my fault.

Michael: Ok that's it I have had it

Marcie: Michael, what’s wrong?

Michael: I'm tired of this.

Marcie: Of what?

Michael: You blaming yourself for something you have no why of knowing it would happen. So I want you to stop feeling sorry for yourself and start being your old self.

Marcie: How?

Michael: Grieving is fine but you have to let it out and then let Jen go.

 Marcie shook her head.

Michael:  Come on, baby, throw something, hit me, scream

Marcie: Fine

Marcie picked up a lap and threw it against the wall.

Michael: Well how do you feel?

Marcie: A little better but your right it isn't my fault. I had no idea that all this would happen.

Michael walked over to her and pulled her into his arms.

Michael: Yeah

Marcie: I’m sorry

Michael: For what baby?

Marcie: For treating you bad. For trying to push you away.  I love you, Michael. Can we start over?

Michael smiled and bent down to kiss her.

A little reunion

Okay, here’s my version. It’s a little different because it takes Bo’s point of view.  Also, in my version, the prayer circle did not happen.

________________________

Bo looked around the parking garage and told himself to breathe.  The weight of this was heavier than he could even begin to let on.  Rex had trusted him to protect Jen…to find out the truth.  She was not supposed to die.  Nobody else was supposed to die.  Not on his watch.  Not on his watch.

“Excuse me, Commissioner.  Can I speak to you a minute?”

He glanced down and saw Marcie.  Her face looked so frantic and broken that he wanted to turn away.  He had seen that expression on his own face when he looked in a mirror after Drew died. Seeing Marcie look like that felt like another cement block weighing down his soul and dragging him toward the pit of hell.

He shook his head gently and took a deep breath. “Of course, you can, Marcie.”

“I’m sorry because I know you’re busy but I want you to know you can trust me.”

Her voice was barely above a whisper and she was wringing her hands.

“Trust you?  Why would you think—“

“Please, tell me the truth.  You can trust me.  I just have to know the truth.  I know how it works, you know. I worked for you remember?  I know you can’t tell everybody…or maybe anybody else but you have to tell me…trust me.”

 “I don’t understand, Marcie.”

She rose up on the tips of her toes and looked him in the eye.  “I know she’s not really dead,” she whispered. “I know you’ve got her hidden away somewhere to draw out the killer.  But, please, I can’t stand even thinking that’s she’s gone.  So please just trust me with the truth.  I swear I won’t tell anyone else.  I swear. Just please tell me she’s all right. I know you wouldn’t let anything happen to Jen.  I know you wouldn’t.”

How old did you have to be? How much death did you have to see before your heart stopped breaking looking into the face of such raw grief?

 “I’m sorry, Marcie.”

“No.”  She covered her mouth with her hand then removed it quickly.  “Please don’t lie to me.”

Someone said Marcie’s name.  He glanced up and saw John’s brother standing behind Marcie.

Michael put his hand on Marcie’s shoulder.  “Baby, please.  We need to—“

Marcie shook her head violently.  “No.  Everybody has got to stop lying to me.  Jen would not kill herself. She would not.  She can’t be dead.”

Michael reached out for her but she lurched forward, turned, and then pivoted backwards and out of his reach.

“God is not that cruel, Michael.  He is not.  He is not. He is not.”

Michael dipped his head for a second but Bo saw the hint of tears in the corner of his eyes. Michael walked quickly next to Marcie and pulled her into his arms.  “We are going to get through this.  You’re the strongest woman I know.”

“No-o-o-o-o,” she screamed and pulled herself out of Michael’s arms.  She rushed back next to Bo.  “Tell him, Commissioner.  You can trust him, too. He won’t tell anyone.  I promise.  Please.”

Bo stuck his heads in his pockets and looked down at the ground.  What was he supposed to say?

Michael moved behind her and gently wrapped his arms around her and held her in place.  “You’re not being fair to Bo, Marcie.  He has a job to do.”

Marcie ignored Michael and looked over at Bo with pleading eyes.  “She’s not dead, Commissioner.  Please, tell me the truth.”

Bo could hear the fragile strand of hope that was holding her together riding on the current of her voice but nothing came from feeding into someone’s denial. He knew that the hard way too.  “I’m sorry, Marcie.  There was nothing anyone could do.”

“Don’t lie to me,” she yelled.

“Marcie, you have to stop,” said Michael.

She looked up at him as if it was the first time she realized he was there.  Suddenly, she jerked herself forward so abruptly and violently that Michael was force to let her go.  She swung around as if she was punch drunk then stared at Bo with wide, tear filled eyes.  She opened her mouth but no sound came out.

Then he saw the strand break.

She sank to her knees and covered her face with her hands.  She started rocking and softly at first but then louder and louder she began to wail.

Each wail felt like someone was sticking a knife in his heart and he died a little.

Someone handed Michael his medical bag.  Michael caught his eye and then nodded. He understood and backed away. It was in Michael’s hands now.  There was nothing more he could do here for Marcie or for anyone else.  He turned and walked out of the garage. The sound of Marcie’s screams faded slowly as he approached the street and the noise of the traffic blended with the sounds of grief and finally muted them.
