Scene 24

 Evil Strikes Back
OLTL: 8/14/03, 8/18/03 & 8/19/03

August 14 (Thursday)

Setup:  Ultra Violet is broadcasting Midnight Logic live.

The club is packed and everyone seems to be having a good time, especially Al and Marcie.

Marcie is perched on the back of a booth rocking to the music and Al is standing behind her. Jen & Joey arrive.  They have come to celebrate Jen’s divorce from Rex by coming to his club to hear Midnight Logic.  They are both thrilled that they can now be seen in public openly.  Al and Marcie see Jen & Joey and note that they look happy.  Marcie turns around and wraps her arms around Al’s neck and says that happiness must be catching.

He asks her in a playfully sarcastic tone what she has to be happy about.  She smiles and says she’s happy that Voice of the Night is back on the air and that Deke and his friends won’t be bothering them anymore.  Al smiles at her then Marcie tells him excitedly that she has also been asked to pledge a popular sorority on campus.  Al is obviously slightly wary of the news but he congratulates her then asks if she wants a drink—her usual, a diet Coke.  Marcie tells him to make it a rum & diet Coke.  Al is surprised because she doesn’t usually drink but she tells him it is a celebration and one drink won’t hurt her.

In the meanwhile, Deke and Thug #1 have been watching Al & Marcie.  Thug #1 tells Deke that he heard he made bail.  Deke says it was embarrassing calling his parents and telling them he was in jail and now he might even get thrown out of school because the new president of Llanview Univ. is all into free speech and is pushing hard to make an example out of him.  Deke points at Marcie and says, “All because of that fat little bitch.”   Thug #1 tells Deke not to worry because he heard Maddi-evil has a plan to get Marcie.  Deke grins and says that was true.  The Sig Delts plan to “fake rush” Marcie but he also has his own plans.

Jen & Joey are at the bar talking but then Jen leaves to go talk to someone else.  Al & Marcie walk over to Joey who is standing at the end of the bar.  As she passes the bar, Marcie puts her glass down.  Marcie & Al greet Joey then Marcie goes off to find Jen, saying she’ll be right back.  Joey notes that Al & Marcie look solid.  Al nods and says they were just saying the same thing about he and Jen.  Joey wonders if it bothers Al seeing Jen with him.  Al says no and that he is over Jen.  She was toxic.  Joey’s eye grow wide and Al qualifies his statement, “She was toxic for me but she seems to be making it work with you.”  Joey gives credit to Jen for making it work and Al says he’ll never regret what went down between he and Jen because if it hadn’t happened he never would have found Marcie.

As Al and Joey talk, Deke slips LSD into Marcie’s drink.

Later, the effects of the drug of begin to show in Marcie’s behavior.  She throws her head back and drains her glass in an exaggerated manner.  Al asks if she wants another drink but she says no because she feels dizzy and as if she is floating.  He tells her to float on onto the dance floor with him then but she says she’s not a good dancer.  He tells her to look around because neither are the rest of the people in the club.  He tells her they will slow dance. She protests that it is a fast song but he tells he didn’t care.  Marcie giggles and wraps her arms around him and they begin to slow drag.

Deke and Thug #1 grin as they watch Marcie & Al.  Deke says that even though he only slipped a half a tab into Marcie drink, “Little Marcie Walsh is going to have a pretty wild trip.”

And in fact Marcie’s behavior becomes increasingly bizarre.  She keeps staring at the abstract images on the television monitors that dot the club as decoration and traces the  images with her fingertip.  When Flash & Riley walk past, she is totally effusive with praise for their performance and gestures wildly as she talks.  Al suggests that maybe Marcie needs some air, Riley & Flash agree.

Marcie & Al go into the back alley.  Marcie cannot stop looking at or talking about the stars.  Al realizes that something is wrong with her.  He tells her he saw Deke earlier and asks if he did or said something to upset her and that’s why she is acting so strange.  She tells him to forget about Deke.  Everything is good.  Real good.

Al says then that one drink really got to her head.  Marcie locks her head onto his chest and wraps her arms around his waist and almost lifts him off the ground.  She tells him she loves him so much and wants to be with him.  She wants them to be one person.

Just at this moment RJ appears and tells them they shouldn’t be in the alley.  They leave.

Later, back in the club, Al is sitting on a step and Marcie is stretched across his lap.  She says she is hot and then focuses on the colors in the room.  Deke strolls by and tells Al that his girl looks like she is kind of whacked.  Al gets upset and Marcie’s mood shifts to paranoia.  She begs Al to get her out of the club.

Once again in the alley behind the club, Al and Marcie are sitting on a crate.  Marcie has an empty bottle of water held straight up trying to shake water out of it. Al hands her a full bottle and gently suggests she might have better luck with that one.  Marcie complains that her mouth is really dry and her back hurts.  She is also suspicious and agitated.  Al gently tells her that he thinks someone drugged her drink and that he wants to take her to the clinic to get her checked out.  Marcie is mortified and wants to know who would do this to her. Al tells her he suspects it was Deke or Thug #1.   Marcie begins to cry and ask why they are doing this to her.  Al pulls her into his arms and comforts her.

August 18 (Monday)

At the police station, Marcie is walking down the hall talking on her cellphone.

Marcie: I just called to see how dad is. Ronnie, I'm fine. No, no, you do not have to come and check up on me. Ok. I will, I promise. All right, I'm at work. I got to go. Bye.

Later, Marcie is at her desk and Al is sitting in the chair next to the desk.

Al: Are you sure that you're ok?

Marcie: Yeah. I'm doing lots better. Please don't worry. Now, I'm taking it easy, I'm drinking gallons of water, and I'm looking forward to never hearing the letters L.S.D. In that order again.

Al: You know Deke did this because he got busted. I mean, he just wanted to get back at you, so he put --

Marcie: Listen, I don't want to think about it, ok? (She rubs his hands)

A detective walks up and hands Marcie an envelope.

Marcie:  What's this?

Detective: From, well, all of us.

Marcie: Oh, my gosh. Guys, you know, I wasn't even in the hospital overnight. I was at the free clinic. And plus, you guys, you know, I know that a lot of you don't agree with what I'm doing, so --

Detective: You're part of the force, Marcie. Nobody hurts one of us and gets away with ..

Marcie: Thanks.

Later, Al walks away from Marcie’s desk into the main area and Marcie follows him.

Al: Marcie, I'm thinking of taking some time off from the radio station so I can spend more time with you.

Marcie: No, no, you just got back there. Besides, the Voice of the Night is the only person telling people what's happening.

Al: Well, you know, that's not exactly true. I mean, a lot of people are talking about what's going on.

Marcie: Yeah, but the students trust you. You know, they care. They listen to what you say. They care about what you have to say.

Ron walks in.

Marcie: What are you doing here?

Ron: What kind of greeting is that?

Marcie: I told you not to come.

Ron: Oh, that's much better. Hey.

Marcie: I told you I was fine.

Ron: Yeah, I know what you told me, but you didn't say you got roughed up.

Marcie: But --

Ron: Is that true?

Marcie: It was nothing.

Al: It wasn't nothing, Marcie. How you doing, Ron?

Ron: Fine. So what's the deal with these guys who roughed her up?

Marcie: Al left out the part where the guys got arrested. One of them got arrested.

Ron: Well, that's good.

Marcie: See? So I'm fine. You can go home and you can take care of dad.

Ron: Yeah, ok. I'll go back home to Jersey, but you're coming with.

Later, Marcie is leaning against her desk talking on the phone.

Marcie: Yeah, I'll be sure to give him the message. Ok. Bye.

Marcie writes out a message and sticks it on the detectives’ desk.  She walks over to Ron.

Marcie:  Ronnie, there is no way that I can go home with you.

Ron: Sure you can.

Marcie: No, Ronnie, I can't. Classes are starting. Al is here. There is no way he's going to let anybody hurt me. I'll be fine.

Jen walks in.

Jen: Hey.

Marcie: Oh, Jen, Hi. Hey.

Jen: Look, I know this is short notice, but --

Marcie: What?

Jen: Joe and I are getting married.

Marcie: Oh, my god, oh, my god! When?

Jen: Tomorrow at Llanfair.

Al: Congratulations, Jen.

Marcie: This is my brother, Ron, and he wants to kidnap me and take me to New Jersey -- but I can't go because I'm going to Jen's wedding.

Ron rolls his eyes.  Marcie grabs Jen’s hand and they walk away from Al and Ron.

Marcie:  Come on, give me all the details.

Ron and Al stay put.  Ron looks over at Al.

Ron: Hey. You really care about her, don't you?

Al: Of course I do.

Ron: Then please make sure she gets home to her family.

Al: Ron, did you hear what she said? There's no changing her mind.

Ron: Yeah. Yeah, yeah, I know. I know.

Al: Listen, if it's any consolation, she has the support of the entire Llanview police department.

Ron: Yeah, because she's got enemies in Llanview. Listen, my family and I don't always agree on everything Marcie chooses to fight for.

Al: Yeah.

Ron: But back home in Ridgeview, I don't think she had one single honest-to-god enemy.

Al: Well, that's probably true, Ron, but she's not going to run for cover.

Meanwhile, Jen and Marcie continue to talk.

Jen: Listen, I know I've asked you this favor before, but this time it is for real.

Marcie: But you have to ask me first.

Jen: Will you be my maid of honor?

Marcie: (giggles) You bet I will!

Jen: Thank you. I mean, I just want this one day to be a day where something terrible doesn't happen to turn everything upside down. So if you say you'll be there --

Marcie: I will. I will be there.

Jen: Thank you.

Marcie: You're welcome.

Jen: Again, I have a million things to do, so I got to run.

Marcie: Ok.

Jen: But thank you.

Marcie: Ok, you're welcome. Oh, Jen? Congratulations. I'm really happy for you.

Jen: Thanks.

Later, Ron, Marcie & Al are still in the squad room at the police station.

Ron: I've decided to stick around a while.

Marcie: Really?

Ron: Yeah, make sure you're ok.

Marcie: That's great.

Ron: Yeah, Al and I are going to make sure we find out who's been sending those threats and make them pay.

Marcie: Well, I think that's a great idea, but how are you two going to find out who did it when the police can't even find out?

Al: Well, the cops have to follow the rules. Me and Ron don't.

Marcie: Oh, wait a minute, guys.

Ron: We've got to get started right now. I'll see you later, sis, ok?

Marcie: No, I don't think you should do that.

Al kisses her quickly.

Al: Later on, sweetie.

Marcie: Al -- guys –

Ron and Al rush out.  Just as Marcie turns around, Maddi-evil appears.

Maddi-evil: Marcie.

Marcie: Hi, Madison.

Maddi-evil: Still want to pledge Sigma delta?

Marcie: Oh, sure! ! Yeah, I do. I'm just a little worried, you know. I hear that the hazing can get a little weird sometimes.

Madison: I've heard that, too, from girls that don't get asked to join.

Marcie: (giggles) Oh.

Maddi-evil: Well, this ceremony isn't a pledge thing anyhow. It's this special pre-rush ritual we like to do with girls that we really, really want to rush us.

Marcie: Oh. Yeah, ok.

Maddi-evil: So, great, I'll call you with the when and where?

Marcie: Yeah, sounds good. I can't wait.

Maddi-evil: Hmm. Me, too.

Marcie: Ok. Bye.

Maddi-evil walks out into the corridor and then dials her cell phone.

Maddi-evil: Deke, it's me. It's all set. She's never going to know what hit her.

Maddi-evil looks at Marcie who is sitting at her desk with a big smile on her face.

August 19 (Tuesday)

Setup: Marcie is laying across her bed in her dorm room.  She is reading a brochure on the sisterhood of Sigma Delta Delta.  There is a knock on the door and she freezes.

Marcie: Who is it?

Jen: It's Jen, coming to see my maid of honor.

Marcie: (giggles with relief) Oh, Jen.

She jumps up and opens the door, after disengaging three different locks.

Jen: Hey, I brought your dress.

Marcie: Oh, great.

Jen: How many locks do you have on that door?

Marcie: Three, but, see, somebody tried to, you know --

Jen: Yeah, they trashed your place, I heard about that.

Marcie: Yeah, well, it wasn't just that. They were pushing me around Angel Square, and I hit my head and then somebody put LSD. In my drink at ultra violet.

Jen: What?

Marcie: Yeah, Al had to take me to the clinic.

Jen: Oh, my god. No wonder you're being careful.

Marcie: Yeah. I keep on wondering what they're going to do next.

Meanwhile at the police station, Deke rooster struts into the squad room.  Bo is waiting for him.

Deke: So, what's next? You going to apologize for making a false arrest?

Bo: No, you're not under arrest, Deke. I just asked these officers to bring you down so I could ask you a few questions.

Deke: I didn't drop acid in anybody's drink. Anything else?

Bo: Yeah. I want you to get something straight. Every cop in this department loves Marcie Walsh. Now, you hurt her, you hurt us. And I think you should give some thought to what that could mean to you. Now get out of here.

Al rushes in, followed closely by Ron.

Al: Hey, hey, Bo! Don't let him go. Don't let Deke go, okay? I have proof, and it's going to put him away for a very long time.

Meanwhile, back in Marcie’s dorm room, Marcie is holding the maid of honor dress in front of her.

Marcie: Jen, this is gorgeous.

Jen: I know. I loved it from the minute I saw it. But wait, there's more.

Marcie: More?

Jen: Can't go to a wedding with a bare neckline, now, can we?

Jen pulls out a jewelry case, opens it and hands it to Marcie.

Marcie: (gasps) Oh, Jen, this is gorgeous. It's -- it's too -- it's too much.

Jen: Just imagine how good it's going to look on you.

Marcie: Oh, thank you.  (hugs Jen) Jen, I am so excited about tomorrow. You and Joe -- you're going to be the happiest couple in the whole wide world.

Jen: You know what? We are. I just wish --

Marcie: What?

Jen: Well, I just – (Jen sits on the bed) I want this to work so bad, Marcie. I want to be the person Joe believes in.

Marcie: (sits next to Jen) Well, then be that person, Jen.

Jen: It's just, everything I've done -- you know, all that stuff with Cristian and then all the lies I told and then marrying Rex just to spite Joe. It's -- I have to prove that I'm past all that, you know?

Marcie: You will. You will. Because you've finally found the man you are meant to love.

Jen: And so have you.

Marcie: You think so?

Jen: Hello!

Marcie: Well, I need to know, Jen. You need to be honest with me, all right? Because, you know, you've got way more experience than I have, and -- I mean, how do you tell when it's real? Sometimes, it's just hard to believe that Al really loves me.

Jen: Are you kidding me? (looks as if she can’t honestly believe Marcie is saying that) Al's crazy about you. (Marcie smiles) Do you see the way he looks at you? Al Holden adores you

Back at the police station, Al continues to try to convince Bo of Deke’s guilt.

Al: So there's your proof. Not only did Deke send the threatening emails to Marcie, he did all that other stuff. And when you search his room, you are going to find all kinds of evidence. He probably threw that cannonball. He probably has that acid in his room right now that he dropped in Marcie's drink.

Bo: Al -- Al, Al, slow down. Whoa, whoa. How did you come by this information?

Al: That's the beauty of it. I got into his room, I hacked into his computer, and there it was in black and white.

Deke: What'd you say about my computer? Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa -- were you two in the cat house?

Bo: No -- Al, what you did was not legal. See, we don't obtain evidence like that.

Al: I know -- I know, I know,… But now, see, look, you can get a search warrant, you can go in his room, and you can go through his stuff.

Bo: No, no, no, I can't! It's called the fruit from the poison tree. Any evidence obtained in that matter is tainted. It cannot be used in a court. Forget it, ok? You blew it! Why didn't you just come to see me in the first place?

Al: I'm sorry, I didn't -- I just didn't think.

Ron: Once we got into the computer, we didn't search the room, sir. Now, couldn't you get a warrant so that we can go and check this --

Bo: No, no, I can't, no.

Deke: (laughs) Oh this is great. This -- this is just great. I want these two clowns arrested.

Bo: Yeah, well, you put a lid on it, Deke.

Deke: Look, I'm not the criminal here, he is. Him and that -- that fat little --

Al: Hey, you shut your mouth!

Al lunges for Deke but Bo stops him.

Deke: What, what?

In the dorm room, Marcie is looking at her image in a hand held mirror.  She is wearing the necklace Jen gave her.

Marcie: Wow, I've never had anything this gorgeous. You're such an amazing friend.

Jen: No, you. I mean, come on, after everything and -- I really almost blew it for good when I married Rex, didn't I?

Marcie: You were confused.

Jen: Well, you stuck by me. Thank you. I wouldn't want anyone else to be my maid of honor.

Marcie: Thanks.

Jen: So, what do you want to do with your hair? You want to try something new?

Marcie: Oh, yeah -- I don't know, maybe.

Jen: Maybe wear it up, you know? You have such a pretty face.

Marcie: (hesitates) Yeah, maybe. So, you know, I'm surprised that you're not someplace with Joe tonight. You know, someplace really romantic.

Jen: He's on a retreat.

Marcie: A retreat?

Jen: Yeah, I guess it's sort of like a bachelor party for ministers.

Marcie: Oh.

Jen: Even if he were here, I wouldn't want to be with him because I want our wedding night just to be, you know, special, perfect, just like the first time.

Marcie: I want my first time to be special, too.

Jen: (confused) Wait, you and Al haven't -- but that one time I came over and you two were in the bed --

Marcie: That was just, you know -- I was helping him through a really hard time.

Jen: Oh, so, when?

Marcie: I don't know, Jen. I really want to. I just -- I just don't want to disappoint him.

Jen: Oh, no, you won't. Come on.

Marcie: You know, Al's had a lot of experience. You know? See, the only compliment I ever get about my looks is that I have a pretty face or pretty eyes. And what that means is (dips head) that people just don't want to even think about my body.

Jen: No, no, Marcie, that's not what that means.

Marcie: (looks at Jen) I'm afraid.

Jen: Of what?

Marcie: I'm afraid to be naked in front of somebody.

Jen: Even somebody you love?

Marcie: Especially somebody I love.

At the police station, Ron pushes Al back from Deke, who is now sitting in front of the detectives’ desk with a smug expression on his face.

Ron: Al, take it easy.

Al: This guy -- this guy beats up my girlfriend --

Ron: Hey, hey!

Al: Takes a swing at me --

Ron: Dude, keep your cool.

Al: Drops acid in Marcie's drink --

Ron: Keep your cool, man.

Al: Look, I'm charged with a crime? I'm going to jail? How's that justice?

Ron: Al, slow down. Nothing's happened yet.

Deke: Commissioner, I've calmed down. And I'm still waiting. You going to arrest this guy or not?

Bo: Let's think about that, Deke. All right? Because right now, you're facing assault charges for attacking Al in the student union. Now, if you want to play hardball as far as this computer business goes, my guess is the D.A.'s office is going to want to play hardball about those assault charges.

Deke: Ah. I see. Now it's blackmail.

Bo: No, I'm just explaining the facts to you as I see them. Now, the police department will probably want to impound your computer. And then naturally, we're going to want to read everything you've got stored on there.

Deke: Fine. Fine, forget it. (jumps up and looks at Al) He goes free. But there won't be a next time, loser, guaranteed.

Al: Go to hell.

Bo: No, no -- just ease up, Al.

Ron: Al.

Deke’s cell phone rings.

Deke: Excuse me, I'm sorry. Let me take this real quick. Hello?

Maddi-evil: Where are you?

Deke: Forget about me, where are you?

Maddie: Right outside Marcie Walsh's dorm room. Trust me, she's never going to know what hit her.

In the her dorm room, Marcie now has on the maid-of-honor dress as well as the necklace.

Marcie: Jen, you have such amazing taste. (whirls around) This is gorgeous!

Jen: Thanks.

Marcie: Oh, I have something for you, too. Something borrowed for the wedding. But I want to give it to you tomorrow, ok?

Jen: No problem.

Marcie: Hey, would you mind looking at some of the things that I picked out for the, you know, the pre-rush thing for Sigma Delta Delta?

Jen: Why do you care about that stupid sorority?

Marcie: Well, I don't know. I mean, it may sound weird, but, you know, I thought it would kind of be cool to have sisters, you know?

Jen: Since you grew up with all brothers.

Marcie: Yeah.

Jen: But, I mean, these Sigma Delts -- are you sure you're going to be ok with them?

Marcie: Yeah, they really admire me. I mean, they were really impressed when I stood up for peace.

Jen: (chuckles quietly) Ok, and you're sure they weren't just maybe using you?

Marcie: No. I mean, for what?

Jen: Well, first off, you're a straight “A” student. Maybe they just want some free tutoring.

Marcie: Well, that's ok. I mean, if they need help, I'll be glad to give it to them.

Jen looks frustrated.

Outside of Marcie’s room, Maddi-evil and Thug-gette #1 are looking at Marcie’s door.

Thug-gette #1/Sorority Girl: I cased the place out earlier. This is the quietest we're going to get it. No problem.

Maddi-evil: Great. Let's do it.

They approach the door but then hear loud laughter.  They scurry out of sight. Just as the door opens and Jen comes out.

Jen: Ok, I will see you tomorrow.

Marcie: Don't worry, I won't be late.

Jen: I'm counting on you. Lock all those locks.

Marcie: I will. Bye.

Jen stops before getting into the elevator.

Jen: Bye. I'm serious -- lock them.

Marcie closes the door and locks all of the locks.

She then looks at herself in the mirror and smiles.

Maddi-evil knocks on Marcie’s door.

Marcie: (stops moving; very worried) Who is it?

Back at the police station, Deke is talking on his cell phone.

Deke: Yeah. I just heard, man. Maddie's going to make it happen any minute.

Ron and Al are standing some distance away.

Ron: You ready to go?

Al: Yeah. I just feel like such a jerk. We could have had him.

Ron: I know.

Al: Just didn't think, you know? I got carried away.

Ron: You're all right, you know that? Not many guys would take chances like you did to help their girl. My sister's lucky to have you around.

Al: Yeah, when I'm not screwing things up.

Ron: Hey --

Al: Hey, let me tell you something about your sister. You know, she is the most amazing woman in the world. I'd do anything for her.

Ron: Then you're all right in my book. Come on. Let's walk out of here while we're still free men, huh?

Al: Yeah, I'm with that.

Al glances at Deke but then walks out of the squad room but stops at the water cooler in the corridor.  He reaches for a cup when Deke slithers next to him.

Deke: Trust me, Holden, Marcie's still going to get hers.

Maddi-evil and Thug-gette #1 wait outside of Marcie’s door.

Marcie: (talking through the door) Ah -- gosh, Maddie, I didn't realize that you guys were coming by!

Maddie: Got to hurry, Sister Marcie.

Marcie looks at her dress and hesitates for a second but then opens the door.

Marcie: Oh oh, ok.

Maddi-evil strolls into the room, followed closely by Thug-gette #1.

Marcie:  I was just trying on my maid of honor dress that I'm going to wear tomorrow to Jen's wedding, and then I…

Thug-gette #1 drops a sack over Marcie’s head and then she and Maddi-evil push Marcie out of the room.

Marcie:  -- what -- what? Wait a minute. What's going on? What's happening? What's happening? Help!
