 Scene 4

A Funeral & A Diner
OLTL: 3/25/03-3/28/03

March 25, 2003

Setup:  Sam Rappaport’s funeral is Joey’s first official ceremony as the curate of St. James.  He is nervous but Andrew and Viki reassure him.  Of course, since this is a soap opera the funeral is an occasion for more than a few overblown assessments of Sam’s character and out-and-out craziness on the part of Lindsay as well as an opportunity for Sam to show off his white suit, unfortunately only Lindsay can see him.  Marcie is there to support Jen but she is also thrilled that Joey is conducting the service.  When she mentions to Rae that Joey is cute, Rae, wearing a very ugly hat, suggests that Marcie concentrate on the service.

March 26, 2003

After the funeral service some family and friends gather at Sam’s house.  Marcie bumps into Joey outside the front door and tells him what a good job she thinks he did.  He is appreciative of the comments but as they discuss the reason for the funeral an awkward silence develops.  Marcie blurts out, “At least the food is good.”  Joey goes into the house and Marcie berates herself for her inept attempt to maintain the conversation.  She goes into the house and watches Joey.  She can’t help fantasizing about having a relationship with him and daydreams about their wedding.

In the meanwhile, Jen, Will and Lindsay are there, each stressed and distressed in his or her own way.  Lindsay learns that Jen told Bo she had a gun and is livid.  She and Jen argue.  Frustrated Jen walks away.  Marcie rushes next to her.

Marcie: I saw you arguing with your mom.  Is there anything I can do?

Jen:  What could you possibly do, Marcie?

Marcie:  I’m sorry.  It’s just that…I don’t like seeing you in so much pain.  You look pale.  Have you slept?

Marcie reaches for a plate at the buffet table.

Marcie: Here, you need something to eat.  Let me get you something.

Jen: I’m not hungry.

Marcie:  I know you say that (fixes plate) but you need to keep your strength up, Jen.  You really do…”

Jen knocks the plate away and the food flies off.

Jen: Food isn’t the answer to everything.  YOU of all people should know that, Marcie.

Everyone in the room pauses and looks at them.  Marcie is mortified and rushes out of the house.

Joey follows Marcie and tries to comfort her when she says that Jen was right, she is fat and ugly, Joey tells her that she is pretty and she is warm, giving and smart.  Marcie wonders if he is just saying that but he assures her that he is not:  “You’re lovely.  Never forget that.” Marcie mistakes his kindness for a show of affection.  She kisses him and proclaims her love for him.  She is humiliated, however, when he tells her that he does not share her feelings.  She rushes away.

Later at the diner Marcie begs Carlotta to let her have the night off because it has been the worst day of her life.  Carlotta, distracted by her own worries, refuses and is generally insensitive to Marcie’s distress.  Marcie walks behind the counter to begin her shift and turns to what she sees as her only source of comfort—a big ice cream sundae and the Voice of the Night.

March 28, 2003

The next day, Jen comes into the diner, sees Marcie standing behind the counter, smiles and walks over to her.

Jen: Hey, Marcie.

Marcie:  What do you want?  (ice cubes would not melt in her mouth)

Jen:  Are you okay?

Marcie:  (Makes a short, bitter laughing sound) Like you care.  Oh, that’s right you’re here to tell me how fat and disgusting I am again.

Jen:  Marcie, I’m sorry about that.  Okay?

Marcie:  Yeah, well, it’s too late.  My life is already ruined.

Jen:  Because of what I said?

Marcie:  I was so upset that I ran outside and Joe followed me.  He said you were wrong and that I am pretty then I kissed him and told him I was in love with him.

Jen: (Eyes huge) What did he say?

Marcie:  What do you think?  Who would ever be interested in someone who looks like me?  Right?

In the meanwhile, Al arrives at the sound booth of the radio station.

Al: Gordo, could we pre-record my voice of the night stuff?  I have to go to the library.

Gordo:  Dude, you are turning into a regular grind.

Al:  Yeah, well the radio station is owned by the university.  If I flunk out, I’m out of a job and I really like this job, you know.  Pretty much the only thing keeping me going right now.

Gordo: You and a lot of people.  Read your fan mail lately?

Al:  Yeah.  Good those people don’t know who I really am.  And we’re going to keep it that way.  Right?

Gordo:  Okay.  I’m cool.

Al slips into the seat at the console and puts on the headphones and adjusts the mike.  He cues the tape.

Al:  This is the Voice of the Night.  Oh, what a night it’s gonna be.

Back at the diner, Joey comes in and asks for Carlotta.  Marcie is obviously embarrassed and uncomfortable.  She is short with Joey.  Jen is amused.  When Marcie can’t even take the package of deduction forms for Joey for Carlotta without dropping them, Jen tells Marcie she will take care of Joey for her.  Marcie grabs the package and walks away.  Joey asks Jen how she is doing but Jen tells him that she does not want to talk about her father.  He understands and tells her that he has a piece of good news.  Judge Fitzwaters has agreed to give her a break from community service for a while.  Jen thanks him for the information and tells him he can leave now.

Joey: Well, I kinda wanted to talk to Marcie.

Jen:  Why so you can stomp all over her heart?

Joey:  She told you what happened.

Jen:  Yes.  I know you know she has a crush on you.  Why would you do that?  You’re a priest.  What do you know about sex and women?

Joey:  Oh, maybe you can enlighten me.

Jen:  Girls like Marcie can’t handle rejection like other girls can.

Joey:  Other girls?

Jen:  Yeah girls that know if it doesn’t work out with a guy they can just find another one.

Joey:  You don’t think Marcie can?

Jen:  That’s no excuse for you to walk all over her.

Joey:  Look, I think there’s something you’re not getting, Jen.

Jen:  I get that she’s not good looking enough to date.

Joey:  Of course, she is.  She’s a beautiful girl.

Jen:  Are you for real?

Joey:  Look, Marcie is sweet, sensitive and she has a smile that makes you want to smile back.  And you know what the greatest thing about Marcie is?  The world does not revolve around her.  She makes whoever she’s with feel like the most important person in the world.  Guys like that.

Jen looks at him with confused, wide eyes.  Joey turns away and walks out of the diner.  Marcie reappears behind Jen.

Marcie:  Thanks, Jen.

Jen: (whirls around)  You didn’t really hear any of that did you?

Marcie:  No, but I could tell you were looking out for me.  Friends again?

 Jen:  Yeah.  Sure.

Later, Gabrielle comes into the diner for her pickup order.  She pays for Marcie for the order and also pays Marcie for all of the tutoring sessions she has been having with Al.  Marcie tells her that Al didn’t show up for his last session so she can take that part of the payment out but Gabrielle says that things have been going so well she can keep the money.  Marcie thanks her and says she could use the funds.

Just as Gabrielle is leaving Al comes in.  They talk for a moment.  Gabrielle tells him she is getting take-out again because Bo is working with Nora again. Al teases her about being jealous and in trying to defend herself Gabrielle realizes that she is indeed secure in her relationship with Bo.  She thanks Al and leaves.  Al walks over to a booth and slides in.  Marcie comes over with her order pad.

Marcie:  Can I get you anything?  (There is noticeable warmth in her voice)

 Al: Coffee would be GREAT.

 Marcie writes down the order.

Al looks up at her for a second then says: Listen, Marcie, I’m really sorry about blowing you off.

Marcie: It’s okay.  Your mom paid me for the session anyway.

Al: We could make it up.

 Marcie:  Sure.  When?

Al: Ah, I don’t know.  Any time that’s good for you.

Marcie: I’m getting off work now.

Al: You think it wouldn’t be too much trouble?

Marcie:  I don’t mind at all.

Al:  Ah, thanks.  I really could use the help.  My back is up against the wall here.

 Marcie smiles sweetly at him.

I can feel the temperature rising.  Can it be?  Will MARCAL be?

Scene 5

A Demon or Two
OLTL: March 31, 2003

Setup:  Al had blown off his last study session with Marcie to pre-record some Voice of the Night segments so he could take the time off.  He comes to the diner and apologizes to Marcie for missing the session and suggests that they can make it up.  She agrees and tells him they could do it right then since she was getting off of work.

Al and Marcie are in a booth at the diner studying.

Marcie:  Well, you’ve got the Civil War down pact.  Now, on to Reconstruction.

Al:  I’ve got to get out of here.  If I don’t get out of here soon I’m going to jump right out of my skin.

Marcie: (frantic) But I have more questions for you—more study questions for you.

Al: I’m going to Rodi’s and play some darts, okay?  You must have something better to do with yourself.

Marcie looks down and shrugs her shoulders.  Al studies her for a second.

Al: You want to come?

Marcie: (looks up with a big smile on her face)  Really?

Al: Yeah.  Let’s go.

Marcie: Why not!

Marcie rushes out of the booth and she and Al leave the diner.

Later at Rodi’s Max and Gabs are discussing whether Gabs should tell Bo about the letter revealing Matthew’s true paternity.  Marcie and Al enter.  Al spots his parents and touches Marcie to indicate they are there.  He clearly decides though that he can’t avoid them so he plasters a smile on his face and goes over to them.

Al: Mom.  Dad.  Hi.

Gabs is excited to see him and he leans down and kisses her on the cheek.  Marcie moves next to Max with a smile on her face.

Max: (looks up at Marcie) Hey!  How’s it going?

Marcie:  Al’s studying so much he’s going to pass his history test when he retakes it.  I just know it.

Gabs: (rubs Al’s arm) Oh, I’m so proud of you.

Max:  How are you feeling?  Getting any sleep?

Al:  Look.  I’m studying night and day.  What else do you want from me?  Get off my case.

Everyone freezes for a second, clearly shocked by Al’s outburst.  Marcie looks at him with wide eyes.

Gabs:  Al, I think Max just means he’s concerned.  We’re both concerned.  That’s all.

Al:  Sorry.  I just a little sleepy. You know.  That’s all.

Max:  Hey, we’re on your side.  You’re doing a great job.  You, too, Marcie.

Marcie: (beams) Thanks.

She and Al walk over near the bar.

Al:  Hey, I’ll get us some drinks.

Marcie:  Why don’t you get the dartboard?  You better get it while it’s free.  I’ll get us the drinks.

Al:  Okay.

Marcie goes to the bar.  Al studies the pills in his hand.

Later, Al and Marcie are playing darts.  Marcie throws a dart at the board and makes a hit.  She beams.

Al: (smiles at Marcie) Nice.  Hey, you want something to eat?

Marcie:  Sure.  Oh, no.  Jen’s right.  I eat way too much.

Al:  She said that to you?

Marcie:  Yeah.  Well, she was just trying to help.

Al:  Nah.  Sounds like she was just trying to be mean.

Marcie:  I don’t know.  You know I’ve tried to lose weight.  About a million times.

Al: (touches her arm lightly) Don’t be so hard on yourself.

Marcie: (talking very fast and not pausing at all) Yeah, ummm…..I’m always so worried about my grades because I have to keep my scholarship.  You know like when I get an “A” I get so excited I want to celebrate so I’ll have a sundae.  Then if I get a “B” I get so disappointed, I want to eat the sundae anyway.

Marcie: (notices that quizzical look on Al’s face) I’m sorry.  This is really stupid.

Marcie rushes away.  Al looks over at her and then at the small plastic packet of pills in his hand.

Al: (talking to himself) Everybody’s got their demons.

Later, Marcie and Al are sitting at a table sipping their drinks.  Al is jumpy but Marcie is dreamy.

Marcie:  You know I wish I could be like the Voice of the Night and be on the radio.

Al: (suddenly focuses on Marcie) Huh?

Marcie:  Because he’s so sensitive and confident in himself.  You know they way he looks at life on the radio.  I know he’s like that in real life.

Al: (jumps up) I’m going to get us some refills, okay?

Marcie nods.

Al moves out of Marcie’s field of vision and takes the packet of pills out.  He takes some of the pills out.  He looks back at Marcie then closes his fist on the pills in his hand.  He takes a deep breath.

Al returns to the table with the drinks.

Marcie:  Thanks.  You know, you’re not as creepy as I thought.

Al: (laughs and starts to pull off his jacket.)  Well, huh…I guess that’s something, huh?

Marcie laughs too.  Al’s cell phone rings.

Al: Hello

He glances at Marcie.

Al:  I’ve got to take this (gestures with his thumb toward the far side of the bar) over here.

Marcie: Sure.  Okay.

Al puts some distance between he and Marcie then speaks into the phone.

Al: Yeah, what’s up?…. Man, I thought I pre-recorded enough Voice of the Night…Voice of the Night stuff for tonight….. Why can’t someone else cover for the Midnight Marauder?…Okay. Okay. All right.  Okay.  I know he’s covered for me before.  I guess I’ll be there.  I’ll find some way to get through it.  I’m pretty fried.  All right, I’m on the way.

Al closes the phone connection and frantically searches his pockets for the pills.  He pulls the packet out and looks at them.  He slips them into his inside jacket pocket and returns to the table.

Al:  Listen ummmmm…I ummmm … I have to go.  I’ve got something that…that I have to do but ummmm you need a ride…. home…. or anywhere?

Marcie:  Ummm. No.  I’m fine.  (looks slightly hurt)  I’m sure you probably have a date or something. Don’t worry about me.

Al:  Okay.  I’ll see you.

Marcie:  Bye.

Al leaves.  Marcie looks at the bowl of peanuts with renewed interest.  Once outside, Al pops the pills he had been trying so hard to resist.

What a great episode.  This one has me crossing my fingers and giving into hope.  MARCAL will be!  Sigh.
