Scene 31

A Hundred & One Shades of Grief
OLTL: 9/23/03, 9/24/03, & 9/25/03

Tuesday, September 23, 2003

At the hospital, Bo approaches Flash and Riley.

Flash: They said Al just went into shock and there was nothing that they could do.

Bo: I know, honey. Max told me. Al is --

Riley: They took him, his body, just a little while ago.

Bo: Has anybody seen Max?

Riley: I think he's with Al's mother.

Bo: Oh, God. Does Gabrielle even know?

In Gabrielle’s hospital room, she regains consciousness briefly.

Gabrielle: Max.

Max: Hi.

Gabrielle: Big truck. Very fast.

Max: Yeah.

Gabrielle: How's Al?

Max: He's -- he's fine. He's doing great for now. Just sleep.

Gabrielle: OK.

In the meanwhile, Jen has gone to Ultra Violet and runs into Rex.

Rex: See? You just can’t stay away from me.

Jen: Uh-huh.

Rex: Why do you come here? Because you miss the action? The thrill? The fun? Me?

Jen: Right. Actually, I like this club, and Joe said I should go out while he's working.

Rex: Out here? I don't think so. It just seems a little weird that your husband would tell you to go hang out alone at a bar that your ex-husband owns when there are half a dozen other bars within walking distance of the church.

Jen: I like the vibe. No, and not from you. From the crowd. I like the crowd, OK? And anyway, I’m not alone. I’m with -- where'd they go?

Rex: Who? Your imaginary friends?

Jen: No, Flash and Riley and Marcie's brother Ron.

Rex: Oh, I heard them say something about an emergency at the hospital. They took off.

Jen: Oh, God. Al.

Jen runs out.

Roxy: Hey, who put the wasp under her muumuu?

Rex: Under her what?

Roxy: Muumuu! What, did you say something stupid to her? She left here like her dungarees were on fire.

Rex: No, I just told her the truth.

Roxy: The truth? You told her the truth? About what?

Rex: Something that she's been trying to deny for a long time. But she'll come around. It's just a matter of time.

Outside of Gabrielle’s room, Bo and Max are sitting on the floor leaning against the wall.

Max: I just couldn't tell her.

Bo: I don't know how to tell her, either, Max, but I will if you want me to.

Max: No. She should hear it from me.

Bo: Yeah.

Max: I just -- I just can’t think of the words. There just aren't any words. Do I tell her quick or do I break it to her slow?

Bo: Well, you'll know what to say when you're talking to her. There's probably not any right or any wrong way. You just – you got to --

Max: I just -- I just don't know how to get a hold of this. My son is gone, Bo.

At the police station, Marcie looks up something on the computer at her desk.  Jessica comes in and sees her and Nora.

Jessica: Marcie, what about Al?

Nora: Hey. Come here. (She pulls Jessica over) Al is dead.

Marcie gets up and rushes out of the room.

Jessica: Marcie, wait. What -- where are you going? I’m so sorry about what happened. I’m so sorry.

Jen has once again connected with Flash and Riley at the hospital.

Jen: How could he die so fast? I mean, he was fine, and then --

Flash: They say that happens sometimes after an organ transplant.

Ron walks up to them.

Ron: Hey, I checked the cafeteria, the parking lot, the chapel. I can’t find her anywhere.

Jen: Marcie?

Ron: Yeah, she just took off.

Jen: We've got to find her. Come on.

Flash: Come on.

Jen: Where haven't you checked?

Ron: I don't know. Maybe we should go –

Max and Bo continue their conversation.

Bo: Max, nothing I say to you is going to help. And it may not even make any sense, but it'll matter in the next weeks and months. It's bad now, but it's going to get worse.

Max: I keep remembering when Luna was gone, just like that. Just like this.

Bo: Yeah. Yeah, it's the same thing. But you get through it.

Max: I guess.

Bo: You do. You do eventually. The pain will ease up, but it's the missing part.

Max: No. That's never going away.

Bo: No. And that even gets worse. And there's people telling you that it'll get better, but they're talking about somebody who had a long, full life.

Max: Al’s whole life was ahead of him.

Bo: Yeah. It's the same way for me with Drew. Drew's not with me every day now. All we have is the loss and the grief. But you learn to live with it.

Max: God, I hope so. Because this is killing me.

Jessica approaches Max and Bo.

Jessica: I’m so sorry. I just heard.

Max: I can’t believe it.

Jessica: How's Gabrielle?

Max: She's -- she's still pretty knocked out from the surgery. She'll probably just sleep through tonight.

Jessica: Does she know?

Max: I couldn't bring myself to tell her.

In Gabrielle’s room, she is restless in her sleep.

Gabrielle: Al!

Flash and Riley walk into Ultra Violet and spot Rex.

Rex: Ahem. About time. Listen, I am sorry about Holden. Really, I am. But you've got a job to do.

Flash: Yeah, you're a real humanitarian.

Rex: Hey, I got my job, you got yours.

Riley and Flash set up to play and then Riley pauses.

Riley: This is for a great friend, a great soul who didn't have a lot of time, but who found a way to do a world of good deeds. He was that voice of the night saying you're not alone.

At the police station, Jen and Ron spot Nora.

Jen: Nora, have you seen Marcie?

Nora: Hi.

Jen: I’m sorry, this is her brother, Ron --

Ron: Hi.

Nora: Hi, Ron.

Ron: Nice to meet you.

Nora: Nora Buchanan. Yes, she was here.

Ron: She was? Was she OK?

Nora: No, she wasn't. She just sat down on the computer and looked up something.

Jen: You just let her leave?

Nora: Well, there was really no stopping her.

Ron: Look, would it be OK if I – (gestures toward the computer)

Nora: I know nothing.

Ron looks at the computer, while Jen looks over his shoulder.

Ron: I don't even know what I’m looking for, but here we go.

Jen: Oh wait. I know this address. Why would Marcie go there now?

Marcie walks up to a building.  She is talking to herself.

Marcie: You can do this, Marcie. They can’t hurt you now.

Marcie: This is for Al.

There is loud music pulsating from behind the closed door.  She knocks and the door is opened.  Deke is standing there.

Deke: What do you want?

Marcie: It would have been kinder if you'd just put a gun to his head.

Deke: What the hell are you talking about?

Marcie: Al. It's your fault.

Deke: What?

Marcie: He's dead, and you killed him.

Wednesday, September 24, 2003

At the hospital, Gabrielle goes into Al’s room..

Gabrielle: Al? Al, sweetheart, are you awake? Mom's here. Al? Al? Al, where are you?

Max and Bo walk in.

Gabrielle:  Where's Al? Had to go for some more surgery? Max? Bo, where's my son? Where's Al? Where's Al?

At Deke’s, Marcie is determined to let Deke know exactly what she thinks of him.

Marcie: Al is dead, and you killed him.

Deke: I don't know what you're talking about.

Marcie: You are not going anywhere until you face what you did.

Deke: What are you, nuts? Get out of here!

Marcie: You and Madison -- you murdered him with your little sadistic games! But I am not going to let you get away with it.

At the hospital, Gabrielle looks frantically at Bo and Max.

Gabrielle: They had to take him for more surgery, right, Bo? That's -- that's why he's not in this room.

Bo: Honey, listen, listen --

Gabrielle: They --

Bo: No, listen. Al's not in surgery.

Max: We knew there was a risk.

Gabrielle: What are you saying?

Max: Al -- Al's body went into shock. His heart stopped. They tried, but --

Gabrielle: No!

Bo: I am sorry.

Gabrielle: No!

Bo: Don't --

Gabrielle: No!

Bo: Don't hurt yourself. I know -- sit down --

Gabrielle: You're lying to me!

Bo: Please --

Gabrielle: You're lying to me!

Bo: Sit down --

Gabrielle: You are lying to me! You're lying to me! You're lying to me!

She screams

At Deke’s, he is angry at Marcie’s intrusion.

Deke: Go on. Get the hell out of here.

Marcie: Do you want me to tell the whole world what a psycho you are?

Deke: Aw. Did the big guy dump you? Is that your problem?

Marcie: Al is dead!

Deke: (shocked) For -- for real?

Marcie: When you locked me in that dumpster, I caught an infection. And then he caught it from me. And his liver was destroyed, and now he's dead.

Deke: That's not my fault. That's not -- just get out of here.

Marcie: You and Madison and your sleazy little friends -- you think you can treat other people like dirt! Well, you're the scum! You're scum!

Deke: Get out of here! I'm sorry he died, OK? But there is really nothing that I can do about that!

Marcie: You're more dead than he is. And you don't even know it. I'm going to spend my life with the living.

Deke slams the door in her face just as Ron rushes up.  She turns and sees Ron.

Marcie: How did you find me?

Ron: You left the address on your computer screen.

Marcie: You heard me?

Ron: Yeah. You were awesome, sis.

Marcie: Yeah, but it won't bring Al back.

At the hospital, Marcie is in the room with Max and Gabrielle. Bo and Ron are in the hallway.

Bo: How does Marcie seem to you?

Ron: Man, she is one strong kid, I'll tell you that. So far, anyway. I think I should be here when her strength does give out anyway. Yeah.

Bo: Yeah. Well, we'll all be here for her. She's got a lot of friends.

Ron: Thanks.

Gabrielle is distraught. Max holds her and Marcie reaches out for her.

Gabrielle: I -- I failed him.

Marcie: No. No, it wasn't you, Mrs. Medina. It was the transplant. His body gave out, and that was it.

Gabrielle: No, I failed him. I failed him so many times. I wish -- why couldn't I have been the one to die?

Marcie: No. No, you risked your life for him. You almost died on the operating table.

Gabrielle: I wish I had.

Marcie: No. No, don't say that. Don't you say that.

Gabrielle: I loved him so much.

Marcie: I know. I know. I did, too, but I gave him the infection and that virus, and if he hadn't taken care of me, then none of this -- it wouldn't have happened.

Gabrielle: No, you -- you brought him such happiness. You really did.

Marcie embraces Gabrielle.

Marcie: It's OK. It's OK. Is there anything I can get you?

Gabrielle: Just my son.

Marcie walks out into the hallway.

Ron: Hey. How you doing?

Marcie: OK. Not really. I'm scared. Al was the first person who ever truly loved me. I mean, I know you love me.

Ron: Hey, hey. Brothers are different. You know that.

Marcie: He thought I was beautiful.

Ron: He was right.

Marcie: I was beautiful when I was with him, the way he made me feel. He was my best friend. What do I do now?

Max comes out into the hallway.

Marcie: I really loved your son.

Max: I know.

Marcie: Everyone did. The Voice of the Night -- he made such a difference to so many people. He changed my life. I think it's almost time for him to be on the air. I have to go and tell his fans what happened.

Max: Marcie -- you don't have to do that, Marcie.

Marcie: Yes, I do -- for Al. Can you give me a ride?

Ron: Marcie, I don't know if it's a good idea.

Marcie: Ron, if you don't I'll just take a cab.

Ron: Come on, I'll take you.

Ron and Marcie walk away.  Bo comes out into the hallway.

Bo: Max, I'll be right back. Could you keep an eye on her?

Max: Yeah, sure.

Plays the tape

Al's voice: Hey, Marcie. How's my girl? Well, if you're listening to this, then maybe the surgery didn't go so well.

In the sound booth at the radio station, Marcie starts speaking into the microphone.

Marcie: I know that you're all waiting to hear the Voice of the Night, and I'm sorry to have to tell you that, well, the Voice won't be broadcasting from L.U. anymore. He's gone to a place where there's love, peace, and justice, a place where the only thing that matters is what's in your heart. If you've ever heard him, you know that the Voice always spoke straight from his heart. And even though we can't hear him anymore, we know that his spirit will always be with us. Earlier tonight, Al Holden, the Voice of the Night, died. This is the place where Al could always be himself. He touched a lot of people including me, but he was so much more than just a Voice to me. He was my friend, my love, my soul mate. He was my hero. Al was a wonderful son and a brother and a friend to so many people. We'll miss him, but we'll keep him alive forever in our hearts. He loved this radio show. He fought to keep it when the administration threatened to close him down for speaking his mind. And he knew a lot of you were counting on him to keep you company through the long, lonely nights. I know I was. This song was one of his favorites. I hope that you'll remember him.

Music plays and Marcie flashes back to scenes with Al.

Marcie: How'd I get so lucky?

Al: I'm the lucky one.

Al: I'm falling in love with you, Marcie Walsh.

Marcie: I'm way past falling, Al Holden.

Al's voice: I love you just the way you are, Marcie.

 Thursday, September 25, 2003

At Ultra Violet, Flash is working on a song.

Riley: What's up?

Flash: You think Beck ever has writer's block?

Riley: Never.

Rex: Done with the song yet?

Riley: Rex, will you chill?

Rex: Get it ready, babe. I've got half the town showing up tonight, and I am not letting them down.

Riley: A good friend of ours just died. Give it a rest.

Rex: Al Holden died yesterday. This is a brand-new day. Life goes on. Yada, yada, yada. Finish the song, people.

At Crossroads, Cris and Natalie are talking.

Natalie: You know that you want to be at Antonio's bail hearing.

Cristian: You're going to be swamped without Max, Natalie. I don't think you'll be ready to open.

Natalie: Look, I will be ready, Cristian. You need to be with Antonio.

Cristian: You know, I don't know how Gabrielle and Max are doing this. If I lost a son --

Natalie: I know. When Max called me and told me that Al was gone, I just couldn't believe it.

Cristian: Mom says that bad luck comes in threes. First Keri, then Antonio gets arrested, and now Al. Did you tell Jessica?

Natalie: No, I didn't.

Cristian: She and Al have been very close since they were kids.

At the hospital, Marcie is sitting on the bed in Al’s room. Jen and Joey are there.

Marcie: I was sitting in the sound booth, sitting where Al sat. And I was telling all of his listeners about what happened, about how brave he was and how much he loved them all. And Ronnie was with me for a while, and then I started playing all of his favorite songs. And everybody started calling in and telling me how great he was and how much they loved him. And then, when I left the studio, there were like 100 bouquets outside, all for him.

Joey: Is Ron still here?

Marcie: Yeah, he had a lot of work piling back up in Jersey, so I told him not to worry about it, but he's going to come back.

Jen: He's worried about you.

Marcie: Yeah.

Jen: You need to get some sleep.

Marcie: I’ll be fine, really.

Joey: Hey, Jen's right, you know.

Marcie: No. I -- I have to get Al's things. Have to get them together. I have to take them back with me to my place.

Jen: You can’t just go stay at your place all by yourself with a bunch of memories.

Marcie: My memories are all I have. They're everything.

Joey: Hey, she just means you shouldn't be alone right now. It's going to be really hard, OK?

Jen: I know -- why don't you stay with me and Joe, just for a little bit?

Marcie: OK.

Jen: Is that OK?

Joey: That's a great idea.

Gabrielle and Max come into Al’s room just as an orderly is changing the bed.

Gabrielle: Don't touch that stuff!

Man: Ma'am?

Gabrielle: I don't want you to touch Al's things.

Man: We need this room for other patients.

Gabrielle: I don't want you touching my son's things. How dare they come in here and treat him like he's an object? My son was important to a lot of people! Now he's gone! He had his whole life ahead of him, Max. Didn't he?

Max hugs her.

Max: I know.

Gabrielle: I can’t take it. I can’t take this.

At Jen and Joey’s, Jen, Joey and Marcie walk into the living room.

Joey: I’ll take this to the spare room. Then you can get settled in.

Jen: And I’ll make some tea.

Marcie: Oh, no, I can make it.

Jen: No, no. We're taking care of you, remember?

Marcie: Thanks.

The doorbell rings and Marcie goes to answer it.  There is a woman standing there.

Woman: Mrs. Buchanan, I’m Mrs. Roland. We spoke on the phone earlier.

Marcie: Oh --

Mrs. Roland: Thank you so much for letting me come by. I am so worried about my son. It's -- drugs. I don't know what to do. I just pray Reverend Buchanan can help.

Marcie: I’m sorry, but I’m not Jen. I’m a friend of Mrs. Buchanan’s.

Mrs. Roland: Oh, dear.

Marcie: No, no, it's OK. Why don't you come in, please. Maybe I can help.

Joey walks into the room.

Marcie: Joe, this is Mrs. Roland.

Joey: Hi, yeah. Joe. What can I do for you?

Mrs. Roland: Weren't you expecting me?

Joey: No, I’m sorry. Things have been a little –

Jen comes into the room.

Jen: Tea's almost ready, Marcie. Oh, I’m sorry.

Mrs. Roland: Are you Mrs. Buchanan?

Jen: Yes.

Mrs. Roland: Didn't you tell your husband about my appointment?

Jen: Mrs. Roland. Oh, my God, I forgot. I’m so sorry. Look, I’m new at this. Hey, why don't you sit down, OK?

The teal kettle whistles.

Jen: That's the tea. I got to -- hold on just a second.

Jen rushes out of the room.

Joey: I’m sorry. My wife has a lot on her mind. A good friend of ours just passed away. A very, very good friend of Marcie's. Please, have a seat. I’m going to help Jen with the tea.

Mrs. Roland: OK.

Joey leaves.

Marcie: You know, my boyfriend was on drugs, and I helped him beat his addiction. You can help your son. You came here. That's a great first step.

Mrs. Roland: My son may not want to beat it.

Marcie: Yeah. I had to deal with that, too. Tough love works, though. But you have to believe in him. You can’t give up on him.

Mrs. Roland: Oh, I don't want to.

Joey and Jen return with a tea service on a tray.

Joey: Here. Some tea, Mrs. Roland.

Mrs. Roland: Thank you.

Joey: Would you like to talk in the study?

Mrs. Roland: Will you come?

Marcie: Well, I --

Joey: I don't know. You seem pretty tired, aren't you?

Marcie: I want to help, Joe. Please?

Joey: OK, go on. I’ll meet you there.

Marcie: OK. Jen, I’ll take the tea.

Jen: OK. Thanks.

Marcie and Mrs. Roland head to the study.  After they are out of sight. Jen looks at Joey.

Jen: I can’t do anything right.

Joey: Hey, it's no big deal.

Jen: Yeah, right. Marcie just lost Al yesterday, and I couldn't even remember to give you a message. She just knew what to say right off the bat. She just knew what to say.

Joey: Hey, you've been going through a lot. You were worried about Al, too.

Jen: OK. Well, I’m glad Marcie was here to help that woman. You know what? I just thought of a couple things I need from the drugstore. I’ll see you later.

Joey: Hey -- are you sure you're OK?

Jen: Yeah. I swear. So go be that wonderful minister that I love so much.

Joey: OK. I love you, too. Hurry back.

At the hospital, Gabrielle touches Al things lovingly.

Gabrielle: You remember this box. My grandmother's, Graciela's. Al used to love playing with it because she kept all of her sewing things in it. He'd take them all out, put them back in. He would be very happy to know his things are in here.

Max: He was quite a baby.

Gabrielle: Yes, he was -- he was the sweetest, cuddliest baby.

Flashback: (Al as a baby in Gabrielle’s arms). You know you have a father? Yes, you do. My sweet little boy, you do, and his name is Max Holden. There's a Spanish saying. They say that you're only given one true blessing in your life. It's your child.

Max: That's what we have to hold on to.

Max: Remember these. Al's postcards from Argentina. He sure loved that trip there, and the things we did. Buenos Aires. Your father's ranch.

Gabrielle: Are you thinking what I’m thinking?

Max: I think so. Maybe we need to take Al back home to Argentina.

Gabrielle: Maybe we do.

At Jen and Joey’s, Marcie and Joey say goodbye to Mrs. Roland.

Marcie: I’m glad you came, Mrs. Roland.

Mrs. Roland: You both have given me hope.

Joey: Well, you have my number. Call me and let me know how things are going.

Mrs. Roland: Thank you again.

Marcie: Bye.

Joey: You -- awesome.

Marcie: You know, it felt good to get away from my own problems for a while, help somebody else. Where's Jen?

Joey: Errands.

Marcie: She was so upset when she forgot about Mrs. Roland, I thought she was going to cry.

Joey: I know. She hates when she makes a mistake.

Marcie: Everybody does it. I don't know why she's so hard on herself. She's a really terrific person.

Joey: I keep trying to convince her. She just doesn't want to believe it.

Marcie: Well, you will convince her because you're a terrific person, too.

At Ultra Violet, Flash and Riley are talking.

Riley: Hear anything about Al's funeral?

Flash: No.

Riley: I miss him.

Rex walks up.

Rex: You're really going to miss him promoting Midnight Logic on his radio show.

Flash: Step off, OK?

Rex: I was thinking about this -- this song that you're debuting tonight. Why don't you dedicate it to Al? That'd be a nice thing to do.

Riley: Will you drop it? The song is not going to be ready tonight.

Rex: Music boy, I am trying to be sensitive here, OK? If you don't appreciate it, forget it.

Jen walks into the club and Rex rushes over to her.

Rex: Looking for Reverend Joe? Try the soup kitchen on Bleeding Heart Lane. You know, I've got a new single on my jukebox. What is it called? Oh, right, right, right. "Trouble in Paradise." It's great.

Jen: My marriage is fine. Joe is just with a parishioner, and I --

Jen: Was bored silly?

Jen: I’m just trying to figure things out, OK? I’m not that great with all kinds of people.

Rex: What you're not great at is being a preacher's wife.

Jen: Hey, there's your hooker girlfriend. Go bother her.

Rex: Well, you know, Karen may not be living the goody-goody life that you are, but trust me, she's not bored out of her skull.

Karen walks up to them.

Karen: So, how's the ex?

Jen: How's tricks?

Karen: Full of treats. RC 430 convertible. And I just love that new leather smell.

Jen: I’ll bet you do. I need a drink.

Karen: Me, too. So, what's up, Rex?

Rex: Oh, two green apple martinis. Listen, I've got a new friend. He would love to meet you.

Karen: Great. I guess I’ll give him a call, then.

Rex: Right on.

Karen: Steve. Hey, it's Karen. Yeah, that friend of Rex's. New York, huh? Great. How would you like some company tonight?

Riley: He's so obvious. "Why don't you dedicate it to Al?" He just wants the song.

Flash: Yeah, kind of clueless, wasn't it? But I got to say, I kind of like the idea.

Riley: For real?

Flash: Yeah. The song could be like a tribute to Al, like we could dedicate it to him or something, like Rex said.

Riley: Then Rex wins.

Flash: I just want something good for Al. Come on. What do you say, music boy?

Riley: Go for it.

Jen: Why was she so happy to see him?

Rex: What do you expect her to do, cry? That would not be very good for business.

Jen: And you set all that up?

Rex: Well, I help out where I can. I know people who want to meet people, who need people. Both sides are always very generous to me for making introductions. Nobody gets hurt.

Jen: Rex, you're a pimp.

Rex: Whatever. You seem very interested in all of this. I have a couple extra phone numbers.

Jen: You are so disgusting.

Rex: Oh, right. Yeah, I remember. You're a minister's wife. Maybe next time.

At the hospital, the orderly returns to Al’s room.

Man: Are you done with the room?

Max: Yes, thank you for asking.

Gabrielle: Could you please forgive my behavior before? Thank you.

Gabrielle starts to cry.

Max: It's OK, it's OK. I’m here. I’m here.

Bo walks in.

Gabrielle: Oh.

Bo: I tried to get here sooner.

Gabrielle: Oh, Bo. It's OK. I’ll be OK.

Bo: Are you ready to go home?

Gabrielle: Oh, yeah.

Bo: There's -- there's going to be a lot that you have to do now. There's going to be decisions. And I want you to know I’m here, OK? I’m here for both of you.

Max: Bo, we have managed to make one decision. We're going to take Al's body back home to Argentina.

At Jen and Joey’s, Joey is on the phone.

Joey: Thanks, yeah. Tell me if you need anything. Thanks, Andrew.

Jen walks in.

Joey: Did you get what you need?

Jen: That and more. Where's Marcie?

Joey: She was beat. She headed up to bed.

Jen: Maybe we should do the same thing.

Joey: Not that I’m against the idea, but what's going on?

Jen: Since I can’t make it as a good wife, I thought maybe I could be a bad one. I’ll be as bad as you want me to be.

Joey: You know, I really have to work on my sermon. I guess it can wait a little while.

At Ultra Violet, Riley and Flash are still trying to finish the song they have been working on.

Flash: You're right. You're right. We're never going to finish the song in time.

Riley: Rex is a moron. Do not feel pressure because -- it's Al. Hey, everybody’s hurting. If you want to cry, cry.

Flash: It just hit me, you know? No matter who you are, no matter who you're with, it's like you die alone. And when you're alive, you just should be with your family.

Riley: Yeah.

Flash: I know I’m not making any sense because I don't have a family.

Riley: That's because you cut yourself off from them, right?

Riley’s cell phone rings.

Riley: Talk to me. Hey, Sheyne, what's up? What? OK, thanks, man. "Flash of Light," number 98 on the national charts.

Flash: No way. Really?

Riley: Way. We're making it happen!

Flash: You got that right.

Riley: What's the matter?

Flash: Nothing, nothing. It's just the family thing, you know. It's like I got this great news. I can’t call my brother because he's overseas, and I can’t call my dad because he's overseas, too. Nobody knows where Tina is, and not that I’d want to talk to her anyway. She's just like your dad.

Riley: Hey, Flash, he's still my father. Yeah, he has a lot of things wrong, but he's still my dad.
